Thank you for putting out this video. So many channels focus on enduro bikes or cross country. But so few talk about a "trail" bike, (which I feel like is what most people are riding). I'll be mirroring your Spur setup with the Rekon/Dissector. Thanks again!
Re: Assegai/Dissector
Recently, I got talked into the 29x2.5WT Assegai (Maxxterra, EXO) up front and 29x2.4WT Dissector (Dual, EXO) rear and only have a couple of rides on them, but I'm impressed!
I actually got some hard data from my ride (again, this is Utah - the Wasatch Back) just a couple of days ago:
On a 1.96 mile dry rocky climb with 538 feet of climbing, my best climb time is 20:54 and my worst is 23:25 on 16 rides. Today, on a particularly hot day it was 21:48
Another segment has a different type of riding. Something where I'd expect this tire combo to be at a disadvantage. It's a pretty smooth continuous climb of 730 feet in 2.16 miles.
On this segment, my best time in the last 2 years was 27:14 in 2019 (on a nice, cool day according to my notes), with my slow ride 31:24 on 13 rides. Today was 27:36.
The loop within the ride that includes a downhill was 8.88 miles, 1400 feet of climbing with a great downhill section. I was at 1 hour 20 minutes, my second fastest time in 9 tries and that was with lots of hikers and a butt dial call from my wife!
SE Tennessee is my riding area. My Kona Hei Hei 29er came with a 2.25 Ardent and a 2.2 Ikon on the rear. I liked them but wanted more grip for our local rocky, and loose over hard conditions. The Ikon 120 TPI sidewalls don't do well with the rocks in our area. Running the Rekon Race 2.35 as a rear tire now and loving it compared to the Ikon. I went to an Ardent 2.4 dual compound on the front for a better sidewall life and more grip. It's done really well grip, wear, and sidewall abrasion-wise happy with that change. Definitely will try a Rekon on the front after watching this. My wife has Rekon's on her bike and loves them. Thanks for another great video, Clint!
I'm a Giant/Niner guy & your channel is great Clint, keep up the great work! NW lower MI are my local trails, with most similar in flow/style/dirt (light/loose sand over the base) to your local trails. For xc/light trail, I love the Ardent Race 2.35F/Recon Race 2.35R combo on my Giant XTC and the Ardent 2.4F/2.25R on my Vassago Jabberwocky singlespeed. Ardents are great in the spring/fall here when trails are littered in pine needles and leaves. I'd love to try other maxxis combos (Ikon, Recon Race/Aspen), but its hard to deviate from the Ardent/Recon Race combo b/c its so darn good for what I ride.

Great video! On one of my bikes I run a Rekon Race 2.35 rear, and Rekon 2.4 front. It's a great combo. However, the 2.35 Rekon Race measures wider than the 2.4 Rekon. The only downside to Maxxis tires is the casing widths tend to be inconsistent.
This brought back memories, before I switched to a Plus bike I exclusively rode Maxxis Ignitor tires on my Sir Nine & Trek Superfly & many other bikes. For me they just hooked up nicely in all conditions & I knew their limits, I’m gonna try the Ramblers on my gravel bike, stay safe!

I was running Maxxis previously for several for at least 6-7 years but decided to switch things up and try different brands.
Last season I ran Shwalbe rock razor rear and WTB vigilante front on Pivot Mach 6
Now running Michelin Wild enduro front and Bontrager SE4 rear and really liking both. Next are Vittoria tires 😁
I liked the way Dawson snuck a hand wave in at the end. Lol. I’m a fan of Maxxis tires too. With all of those bikes you must have to do a lot of maintenance.
I didn't see him do that until I watched the video back through after I edited it. I laughed pretty hard. Maintenance isn't too bad. I usually sell my bikes after a couple years when they're still in really good condition.
I just changed over to Maxxis Assegai 2.5 on front and Dissector on rear 2.4 both 3C Max Terra EXO and absolutely love this combo on my 2019 Canyon Spectral...

One of my favorite maxxis tires is the ardent race. It works great for the dusty, hardpack trails I tend to ride in Louisiana and Mississippi. It's overall great for dry cross-country and light trail type conditions.
Same here i the Cotswolds / Worcestershire use Ardent race as a a lot of well drained stony bridleways and heavy " gravel" and light mud in the woods . Does the job on my hardtail Chisel.😀
Love the Rekon Race on my XC bike here in GA. Just got an Ardent Race for the front. Seems to provide a bit more grip on the Techy stuff, without sacrificing rolling resistance. Also love the Ikons as well.
I've been riding Maxxis tires for years on my hardtail here in New England; Ikons for dry, fast conditions, and Ardents for general XC. I find that I have to run 60tpi tires. I tried the 120 tpi Ikons and, while they felt fabulous, I just kept tearing the sidewalls open on our sharp, jagged rocks. Based on your video, I'm tempted to try the Rekon 2.4 on the front, paired with my current Ardent 2.25 on the rear.
My go to fast tire setup that still has the needed grip is the Maxxis Ardent Race on the front and the Recon Race on the back.
I like the DHR 2.4 front and rear. Wears pretty well and rolls decent. I'm old and in no hurry.
Great stuff! I just got a Rekon 2.4 (f) and a Rekon Race 2.35 (r) in tan walls, so 60tpi. Can't wait to mount them on my new i9 Trail 270 24h and Hydra hubs wheelset. I may do a review on them.

Where I live I have loose over packed trails, with exposed rock occasionally, and barely any loam or roots. I ride XC and am not brave enough to use a Rekon Race in the front 😂 My bike came with Rekon Race (2.25) in the back and Ardent Race (2.35) in the front; I find this a great combination for the dry months, with very low rolling resistance and surprisingly good traction, while also providing good grip on the front wheel as the Ardent Race is a bit more aggressive than the Rekon Race. For the wet months I found the above tyres way too tame, and I was skidding out both wheels more often than I felt comfortable with, so I levelled up to an Agressor in the back and a Forekaster in the front, both 2.35. I've found this combo to work great with wet, but not excessively muddy, trails.
Look up continental Race Kings. A set of those will make you 20-30W faster than your dry tires. I just got them, so I can say that the grip is also sufficent.
I will say that Assegai is a game changer for sure. I bought my Stumpy and it came with Butchers but after washing out the front a few times and going OTB because of it I looked into something more aggressive. And that Ass brings out a whole new level of confidence to save my ass haha. Also the 2.5" Assegai weighed about 2oz less than the 2.6" Butcher so that was a nice bonus (and Specialized specs them at like 960g when in reality they're about 1080g lmao). Also those IRCs seem to have some giant/bulky knobs... Not sure if I like that or not haha.
Currently running Specialized Rhombus Pros on the gravel bike after wearing out the Kenda Flint ridge tires.
My 2018 Spectral came with Rekon on the rear, really didnt match the bike, lousy traction climbing
I went to Uwharrie last Sunday about 2pm and they had racing there Sat. and Sunday, Hammer nutrition was just packing up when i got there, it was wet and MUDDY, i love the factory spec on the Instinct BC.
The 10-52 XO upgrade is certainly noticeable and glad i did it.
I run DHFs on my downhill bike, DHF and DHR on my trail bike, and I switched my gravel bike to the re-fuse (terrible name, great tire). I always want to test out different brands but I would hate to waste money and get something I like less
I appreciate the video . I’ve been using maxis for a few years usually an ikon or ardent race on my Xc down country. However I’ve had 3 rear tyres developing and eggs in the tread and it exploding.

I run 2.6's on my trail bike. Front is a Vittoria Mazza, the back is a Vittoria Agarro. The Mazza are similar to a DHF, and the Agarro is like an aggressive Recon.
When I raced I used the Ikon in the back with a Nobby Nic up front. I would blow out a side wall of the Ikon after 4-6 months of riding. It was too light weight for me preference.
Been using Bontrager XR4 Team Issues the last couple years on my trail bikes.
great vid like always... and just my 2 cents .. the Assegai Max grip are the best DH tires I've used yet.. I'm guessing they will be great for enduro minus the weight issue though.. but there grip is insane!!!
People think Dissector is just for rear. I ran it half of summer on front and is amazing and rolls fast. In maxx grip it sticks to everything. Can pair with a aggressor on rear for pretty fast bike but plenty grip if you sometimes hit some grade 5s.
Yellow lettering is why maxxis became the Mtb brand leader.
I’m now running Maxxis 2.2 iKON tan wall front and rear on my Santa Cruz chameleon.

Agressor / Assegai is another good combo Clint. I run a 2.5WT Agressor rear, 2.6 Assegai front, in Phoenix/Sedona/Flagstaff, and the combo just works well anywhere.

Do you find having the Assegai in front slows your rolling a bit?
The front doesn't seem to affect my speed as much as you would think, most of your weight is on the rear when. peddling, and the trade off is well worth the weight penalty of the tire.
I found out for me 2.3 the bike feels just right, balances the precision, snapiness and agility with stability perfectly. I put on 2.6 and my bike turned downright 'boring', was just too stable to 'nothing is happening here', there can be too much of a good thing, if they made the Assagai in 2.3 I would have tried it, as it is I ordered the Eliminator which I will try tomorrow.

I am debating that high roller2 /agressor setup. Do you think maybe both high rolllers 2.3 whould be better, or rear agressor 2.3? Its a cube attention sl 2021 (i know overkill tires but i live in an extremly rocky area and the rocks destroy tires like nothing).

I scored an Ibis Ripmo AF in late October (I was super fortunate) and it's specced with dual Assegai. I didn't get alot of time on it before the snow fell here in Minnesota, but I can confirm quite a bit of rolling resistance. I'm actually considering changing my rear to an Aggressor. Alot of people are making the switch to something faster in the rear, at least on my Facebook Ibis Owners group. You probably have the right idea running it only on the front.
Yeah I tried dual Assegais just to see what it's like. Stability and grip are there for sure but it really only rolls a few feet before it just stops due to the resistance. I commented elsewhere too, rolling resistance is not just the stopping when moving, but also the resistance it puts up when you begin pedaling or are accelerating (the inertia, basically). Of course it is a beast setup when you do go downhill though.
I put a Dissector in the back and it really made a huge difference in terms of the rolling resistance and speed. I can see why a lot of bikes come fitted with Assegai front/Dissector rear nowadays. Aggressor could work too. I opted for the Dissector because it's made for looser trails, and there's plenty of that here in SoCal. Even though it's a front tire, many, including myself, like it as a rear tire.
I've tried Dissector front and rear and I also like that setup too. It's what I'm running right now actually. Even faster than the Assegai/Dissector combo, with still good amounts of grip up front.
Yup, My Ripley AF came with a Dissector/DRH II (r/f) set up and it feels more enduro like. I'm thinking of running these on a Ripmo and changing the Ripley to Agressor/Disector (r/f). The Disector was the new tire in the mix for me and its been great.
On my trail bike, I use a dissector on the front and a minion SS on the back 👍

I have experimented with other tire brands and I am done with that and will stick with maxxis indefinitely unless something changes with their tire that I dont like which I dont expect . I have 2.3 maxxis minion Dhr2 front and back 60tpi on my hardtail in the rocky and sandy high desert of socal . Grip is what I need and these tires provide that. I need a tough tire in the sharp rocks that I come up against . All the other brands I tried have failed in theses elements but not these Dhr2s.
Ikon front and aspen rear on my xc bike. 3 season with this setup now.
Yeah, I'm sure the setup is super fast on the dry hard pack. Aspen seems almost like a road slick. I have an XC bike and the trails here is a combination of dry, loose pebbles, gravel, rocks, clay. I like Maxxas tires but haven't found the best combo. I have gone back to schwable nick/rocketRon F/R. Really like the speed of this setup while still feeling there is enough traction on rocky descents. But still the usual issues with these tires, fast wearing, and general durability. Also Maxxas tubless install seems to go on easier for 2.25+ tires. I think my next set may be Maxxas F/reckon R/reckonRace or maybe try vitoria mezcals
Man Clint, you are missing out. Schwalbe Racing Ray (F) Rocket Ron (R) are the ultimate combination. The Ray will never wash out, the Ron is fast in the dry AND wet with plenty of grip and they roll faster than any Maxxis tire. Oh, and they typically weigh less too although the newest 2020 versions have increased in weight. Only downfall is the Rons take some time to setup, but that tradeoff is worth in in the long run. Do yourself a favor. Buy a set. If you don't like them, contact me and I'll buy them back from your at retail price plus shipping. You can't lose.
I have Maxxis Ardents on both of my bikes. Great tires.
Road = Continental GP5000 28mm, Gravel (smooth) = Hutchinson Overide 38mm, Gravel (rough) = Maxxis Rambler 45mm, MTB = Maxxis Rekon 2.4” (front) & Maxxis Ardent Race 2.35” (rear).
I have Kenda Happy Mediums on my two bikes. I originally wanted Michelin WildGripper Sprints, but those were discontinued ages ago, and the Kenda Happy Medium was basically their version of the WildGripper Sprint. Naturally, it was also discontinued after I bought my first set. Dammit!
Michelin wildgripper sprints… That’s a blast from the past! I had some of those on my first 26er racing Hardtail many many years ago. I think they were green

my xc combo is both ikons front and rear. 2.3 front and 2.2 rear. pretty happy with them. I actually ride on asphalt 90%. is that a good combo for lowest rolling resistance possible or there is something better...I'd love some suggestions or advice.lol
Excellent video! One question, which tire do you think is faster, the Dissector or the Rekon? If you go to the Maxxis website, they list the Dissector at 3.5 for speed, and the Rekon is at 3. But, I also noticed that the Dissector is 912 grams, and the Rekon is almost a hundred lighter at 800. I'm thinking of running a Dissector up front, and either a Rekon, or another Dissector in the rear. I live in Arizona, and ride a Giant XTC Advanced hard tail.
Vittoria Barzo front and rear in the wet (Mota at the rear when it gets really muddy) ; Barzo front and Mezcal in the rear when it's dry; light, fast rolling and extremely durable

Maxxis must be the most popular tyre in north america by far!! Do ppl in Europe have a better selection because here in Ireland, ppl do use them but they are no were near as popular!!
I'm excited to try the dissector on my trail bike. I just got done with 1 week of riding an Ibis Ripmo with a set of Assegi's on it and those things are absolute velcro! So great! They also pedaled well on the long climbs!
Hi Clint, first time to ever comment on your channel. Have you considered the Maxxis Ardent Race for your XC bikes? It's a great combo of grip in the corners and fast rolling resistance designed to handle techy conditions.
Also, one of the key guys at Maxxis went to Vittoria and are worth a look/perhaps a future review. Instead of a 3C, they use a 4C and Graphene tech in their tire rubber. An aggressive, grippy tire for the rocks that is getting a lot of praise is the Agarro.
Anyway, keep up the great content. Also, enjoy your gravel coverage in addition to the mtb.
One other Maxxis tire I'm running on my gravel/adventure/bikepacking bike is the 27.5 or 650b Aspen. Awesome traction on loose gravel and rooty singletrack. Plus, its tread falls into the XC rolling resistance realm. Thought I'd share in case others are into that sort of riding, too.
I used the regular Ardent many years ago on a bike but not the Ardent race. I've heard a lot of good things about that tire. I may try out on the front one day. As far as Vittoria tires, I used the Mezcals on my XC bike a few years ago and really liked it.

Maxxis and Specialized tires are my go to brands. Mainly because you can buy them literally everywhere. They both seem to fit all my rims and seat predictably. Worst brand is Schwalbe unless you like overpriced tires that just shred apart less than a handful of rides in.
Try the forecaster 2.6 up front same weight better grip. Also in 120tpi is super grippy
What do you think about running a double dissector on a trail bike? No Rekon rear, do you think it’s worth more grip in rear or leave it alone?
You should give the Specialized tires a try. I live in Colorado Springs, so front range riding is different than your main riding spots. I have already destroyed 3 maxis tires this year. What I dont like about Maxxis is the weights are upwards of 80g higher than advertised, and the actual width of the tire are usually much less than labeled. Specialized are within a few grams and very close to the advertised width. Almost exact, and perform at least as well as maxxis. My Specialized Ground Control 2.3 is actually wider than Maxxis 2.4WT. I have used lots of Schwalbe tires also but the rubber is too soft here with all of the rock, and they tend to wear way too quick.

I notice you run Wide Trail (WT) on all your Maxxis tires. I’ve read that “WT” tire sizes are optimized for 35mm inner width rims. I’ve also read 30-35mm. My rims are 30mm on my 2021 Giant Trance 29 3. I’ve also read my rims are 25mm 🙄. What size are your rims on your trail and enduro bikes? I’d like to run 29x2.5 Minion DHF in the front and 29x2.4 DHR II in the rear and stay away from WT tires but I’m having a heck of a time finding the right size and spec in NON WT, especially for the DHR II at 2.4 for the rear. What do you suggest? Should I stay away from ”WT” or will I be fine running “WT” with my current setup? Im confused as all hell. Your videos are great by the way, thanks for all the detailed info.
Of the Dissector and Assegai up front, which do you think rolls better and/or takes corners better in rougher terrain?
I just went to an Assegai up front (almost went w/that Dissector) to pair w/my DHR2 on the rear. So far I'm very impressed, but I do run wide 2.6 on 30mm carbon Roval rims. Wider has seemed to get me through the looser stuff better. Probably should've gone 2.4 in the back--so far so good though. I also tend to run a couple/few PSI more than some riders depending on the conditions, so the wider tire handles that well.

I’ve been getting blisters on my Ardent Race tires. Three tires in 18 months on my cross country bike. Some people say it’s associated with Stans sealant. Any advice? Thanks

It's always cool to see some love for non-Maxxis tires, and I say that as someone who has a Maxxis Aggressor on the rear of my bike. I feel like Maxxis just becomes the default (granted, for fairly good reason), but it's cool to see some other companies get exposure.
Can I pair Recon Race 2.35 (rear) with my Specialized Fastrak 2.3 (front)? I only replace my rear tyre because already worn out..I only can get this size at my LBS
What rim width are you running on your xc bike?

Is there much of a difference between a disector 2.4 and a DHR II 2.3?
After three sets of faulty Maxxis tires that were so out of round and true they were not rideable. They never straightened out and that makes for some expensive trash filler. Back on Conti's and Kenda's and my fav's WTB. Mo betta.
Hi Clint, you mentioned that you use a narrower tire in the rear for better cornering. Could you please say more about that. Like what is the ideal width in the rear? In relationship to the width in the front.
EXO on Enduro races? Hope you have inserts. I only use DD or DH casing for races.

On the trail bike, does the recon grip well enough on technical climbs? I went a little more aggressive on the rear and wondered if the recon would have been enough?
Yes, no problems on tech climbs.
My rear Rekon had been spinning out on me on climbs. Not sure if it's the way that I ride or possibly the loose conditions here in Southern California (even if it's technical it's often loose at the same time). I tried a Dissector on the rear and I love it and it solved the climbing grip issue for me. A bit heavier for sure but for me the trade off was worth it.
@@TheJofrica thanks for the input. I think I’m gonna run Disector/xr4 since it’s about as light as a recon but a bit grippier. If that doesn’t cut it Disector 3c/dc front and rear.

I forgot to mention, the Dissectors I'm running are DH casing, a bit heavier for sure again, but I do ride some technical chunk, and I don't really feel too much of a weight penalty. Also I think that's the one that comes in Maxx Grip, which I wanted (I think the DD comes in Maxx Grip too).
You could swap tires over between xc and trail bike...?? i.e. 120tpi & 60tpi
YMMV... on an Enduro rig, I feel EXO+ is a minimum. Outback DD is even better.
Great choice of tires! To elucidate a little the Maxxis tpi mistery, it runs this way: All MAxxis tires that aren't 3C (max Terra/Speed/Grip) are dual compound (TR/EXO) and are 60 TPI and all 3C tires ar 120 TPI. ;)

I would recommend the exact tires I show in this video on the cross-country bike and then if you have a trail bike the ones that I show on the trail bike. Very happy with both of those setups.
Surprised you’re only going with EXO on the enduro rear. I’ve put a bunch of holes in my EXO+ DHRII at 25 PSI on my 130mm bike, and I’m only 150lbs…. Next rear tire is going to be DD.

You should look at rolling resistance tests online. You'll notice that Maxxis tires are average at best. Even the Ikon rolls 50% slower than other brands' XC offers with the same amount of grip.

My trail bike came with maxxis rekon on front and maxxis ardent race in the back. They are 27.5 and 2.60 width. What is the pros and cons of using a 2.40 wide tire instead of the 2.60?
2.4 will feel a bit more agile and slightly less stable. Slightly less small bump absorption, especially considering you need to run a bit higher pressure. The differences are minor though.
I got a DHF/RHR II combo, tons of grip but now I feel than like tractor tires, beginner mistake I gess ☹️
Need some advice:
I've been running maxxis rambler tires in 700-45c for rough gravel. I've only ever ran these in 60 TPI and have been pretty satisfied. I just ordered another set, exactly the same. However the tires that came are 120 TPI instead of 60 TPI. This was do to the shipper error.
How much difference is there really between 60 TPI and 120 TPI? I'm most concerned about getting a puncture. Just wondering if it's worth returning to get a 60 TPI version.
120 will feel more supple and compliant so that would be my choice. I wouldn't worry about it unless you ride in areas with jagged rocks.
@@ClintGibbsGreat video thank you, I'll give the 120 TPI a try. I do encounter some sharp rocks, not much, buts it's mostly crushed gravel and loose over hard terrain I ride. Most of my flats have been due to broken glass or thorns, so I think I'll be fine with the 120 TPI. Can't wait to enjoy the benefits!
I used maxxis rekons exo+, they can’t handle rock gardens and the side walls rub through quickly

FRONT: MAXXIS Disector 120 TPI
REAR: MAXXIS Rekon 120TPI
On the trail bike, yes. On the cross country bike it will probably be a Recon on the front and a Recon race on the back.
What do you think about going Rekon 2.25 front with Ikon 2.35 rear?
Good combo but I would go 2.35 front and 2.25. If you want faster rolling go with Rekon Race up front.

I faced a problem of fake Maxxis tires. There are tons of them on AliExpress and not sure if I get original one when shopping local stores. Do you know something on this issue?
Actually never heard of that. Sounds like the way to avoid it is to shop from your local shop or a reputable online dealer. That’s a bummer.
Thought you'd have the Aspen 2.4 wt as a rear tyre. Have you tried that one?
Yes. We get a lot of leaves on the trail certain times of the year and the Aspen (ironically) doesn't have enough grip for corning on the leaves.
@@ClintGibbs haven't thought of the irony that's funny. I have a new bike (major upgrade since I've been riding a 26", 2010 Lapierre the last 11 years) and it's similar to the Spur in specs. It came stock with 2.35 Vittoria Barzo and I really like them. They're sort of like the Swiss army knife. But I prefer speed above grip and even though they're fast I'm eager to try/compare racing ralph/ray 2.35 or perhaps the already mentioned maxxis. At least for the dryer months.
