  • A big part of racing is making sure you're using the right gear, and we’re always asking questions and testing new equipment to make sure we're using the best gear available. Today, we’re going to be running our own little experiment, comparing Maxxis’s new MaxxSpeed compound to the exact same tires of the old compound. We already know we like these tires for their improved wet weather traction, but do they really roll faster like Maxxis says? And if so, how much faster?

    Other factors beyond rolling resistence can be just as important. Like you stated grip in the wet . Other factors is grip in corners that can play a big part in a race . Puncture protection and one puncture away from loosing a podium . That's what's challenging with mountain biking which is all the variables

    For Macky's 19m uphill and given Maxxis's claim of one minute saved over 90 minutes of racing, you could expect 60s * 19/90 savings, or 12.67s. You got 13s. I think you nailed it! Syd's at 6s for 15m of riding is a bit low for their claims but still better. So, I'm thinking that the compound probably helps as Maxxis claims.

It’s surreal to feel the difference in acceleration coming out of a corner with this vs the Aggressor I had on it for rowdier trails. I wanted to order a t-shirt with the - eating- wins - races-print - but i live in germany, and shipping to germany is so damn expensive from the US ... not only 20 dollars for the normal shipping already but on top there will be some extra tax from the german government and probably from the post office aswell. I'm really sorry, but I'm too afraid that costs might explode and sadly i haven't got that much money left so I decade to support you guys with only some honest and really good meant words, which I'm doing now. So thanks heaps for these amazing built videos, I especially like the category "Syd fixes bikes" and since i watched them i always make my brake bleeds with the - gravity brake bleed - because as you taught us, this works really amazing! And I also like the way you film the races, always trying to show how it really is to race and even with the lows and sad moments which we all know and have from time to time. And I belive that not trying to show anything else which isn't real is what makes your videos so beautiful. So go on, stay thankful and down to earth, as you are and i whish you lots of amazing hours biking on the trails of this world coming. Your excited fan Johannes from germany

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 Год назад +1

      Rekon Race doesn't have separate front and rear versions. Aggressor/DHF is definitely a weird combo, usually people run them the other way around (DHF Front/Aggressor rear). Based on personal experience, the Rekon and Rekon Race are XC tires, meaning they don't have a ton of cornering knob to work with, but roll real fast. I think a good lightweight combo would be the new Forkaster up front and a Rekon Race out back.

      You might be happier on a Rekon on the front instead of the Rekon Race. It's got great traction and still rolls well. Unless you're planning to race XC seriously at which point the Rekon Race would be a better option.

    I just purchased the new 2.4 aspen max speed, unfortunately they are heavier, 760 grams compared to the previous model which were around 720. Not sure but that probably nullifies the speed improvement. What do you think?

    • @Cassienope
      @Cassienope Год назад

      Weight and speed are not clearly linked. If they were everyone would still be running 26 inch narrow tires.

    • @sydandmacky
      @sydandmacky  Год назад

      Also, a little known fact is that there's quite a bit of weight variation tire to tire of the same model in the same compound. For example, the Rekon Races we were using, the old compound, one was 850g and the other was 820. And the new compound, one was 810 and the other was 800. So although the one you got might be heavier, I wouldn't assume that means the new compound is heavier.

I didn't like the Ikon because of the vague cornering or climbing traction out back, and didn't like the unpredictable cornering up front of the Ardent Race. So I moved the Ardent Race out back (like it's cornering as a rear), put the old Forekaster up front (like how it's predictable when cornering) and have really enjoyed that setup.
