I recommend Helen's Babies . An unmarried uncle takes care of his two young (not babies) nephews in their English country home. the children mean well, but need structure and a lot of attention that the uncle doesn't know to provide. So chaos and hilarity . When the uncle tries to court a neighbor lady, the children get involved unknowingly and hilarious misunderstandings happen. This is the book Betsy Ray read while Carnie and Bonnie sewed, knitted, tatted at Carnie's house in Heaven to Betsy. (And we who read the Betsy Tacy books know of Lady Audrey's Secret, lol)

Bravo to all the wonderful booktubers who took part in this unique project. Good job Kate for getting it all together. I love Vanity Fair, Tenant of Wildfell Hall, The Half Sisters, The Ghost Story book already and look forward to reading some other new books, especially Olive. I finished The Mayor of Casterbridge, Janet's Repentance, The Canterville Ghost and other Short Stories, Esther Waters, Carmilla and a few Gothic Tales because, despite getting the shot, I contracted Covid and had 2 weeks in quartine to read in September. Again, great job!

What an absolute treat this video was, and what a great resource for Victober. I am still working my way through most of the popular Victorian titles but I am glad I have this for future reference. The only one I have read (The Tennant of Wildfell Hall) is one of my all time favourite books. I think the one I would add to this list is The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot. Well done also for putting this together :)

Happy Victober. My underrated choice is Mrs. Oliphant's "Miss Majoribanks". It was quite a light and comic book. I thought of it as a Victorian version of "Emma".
Not sure if one can consider any Dickens novel as underrated but "Dombey and Son" is as compelling as his other more well known novels.

I enjoyed this video so much. I’m always looking for underrated and even long lost Victorian authors and books to read. I have two stacks of very old Victorian books that belonged to my Grandparents and Great Grandparents who were born in the Victorian era (except my Grandma). The books are so old they don’t have ISBN numbers (when did that start?) nor are most on Goodreads. Most in the first stack are small books for Children.

I was inspired by a random comment somewhere on the internet to devote Victober to L.T. Meade. She wrote hundreds of books, and though I've only read about 17 of them, any secret misgivings I may have harbored have been politely but firmly dismissed. I find her much more fun, to read, and her style suits me much better than that of Mrs. Yonge, and the sainted Ms Edgewood. I'd extend Victober over into Victautumn if I didn't live in Victallthemonths.
