  • A fast talking street trader cajoles customers into buying coats from his stall at Kenmare Fair in County Kerry.
A coat salesman at Kenmare Fair in County Kerry attracts plenty of attention to his wares from potential customers with his witty sales patter. An elderly man carefully inspecting a blue serge coat is told,
There’s no fleas in it sir, you don’t have to look for them.
The trader wants 22 shillings and sixpence for this particular coat but the old man offers him 15 shillings. The pair agree upon the final price of 17 shillings and sixpence.
When a younger man offers a pound for another coat, the salesman likens him to the Shylock in William Shakespeare play ‘The Merchant of Venice’.
The salesman wants five pounds for the coat and the pair haggle back and forth over the price. When the man offers three pounds for the coat the trader remarks
You must be used to stolen property down here.
Refusing to budge from his three pound offer the man beats a hasty retreat from the stall. As he departs the stallholder revises his price to three pounds and ten shillings, but to no avail.
This edition of ‘Cross Country’ was broadcast on 19 February 1967.

Ah, those were the days. When you'd buy a coat and sure, it would last you twenty years. £3 would be around €60/€65 euro today.

"Aye, he's like Shylock with a pound of flesh!" says the coat seller. Say that today and most people will ask, "Who's Shylock?"
I miss the days articulate, funny conversations. Now it's monosyllabic utterances during partial-attention spasms, phone in hand.
