I was constantly hitting behind the ball with my irons, a recent problem that occurred after I healed up from a severe shoulder injury. While hitting practice balls, I found it necessary to move the ball back in my stance to avoid thin and/or fat shots. After some more body alignment work, I found myself hitting better shots with an open stance. This video golf lesson validates my experience 100%.
I was taught this 25 years ago by John Mason at Encinitas Ranch. I recently went back and looked at some video as I was struggling as I've aged and had some left (lead) shoulder issues, as well as Parkinson's, which some days restricts my rotational mobility. I was on the range today and went back to what used to be an old standby, the open stance. Now I have a feeling of freedom through the ball. My reacent teacher had me trying to shallow out and I jsut couldn't do it physically until I opened my stance a bit. Thanks for explaining and giving a refresher.
With an open stance and swinging to the target it automatically creates the idea of swinging to right field. Most amateurs have a hard time with that concept because they swing to the target with a square stance which most times is over the top. That’s the real explanation for an open stance, I see a lot instructor’s saying it’s for senior players who can’t rotate as fast, that can be true but it’s more about being able to go at the target without thinking about swinging to right field.
I had to watch this video a third time. Such good information. I'd love to be perfectly square to my target, it would seem to make the most sense. But it doesn't work. At 2:07 you mention the flattening of the golf swing by having the open stance. And the impingement of the joints by swinging above the shoulder line. Your explanation is so spot on. Thank you for this.
I’m a new convert to the open stance. The part regarding still having your hands forward along the toe line even with a slight cast along the target line is brilliant
He recommends the same amount of open and a different ball position and side tilt with each club to keep our shoulders square to the start (target) line.
New concept? Perhaps for some but as he said, this has been around for a century or more. I'm now at the age where I think I've got to go this route. It's funny you reference tgm...lol. I worked with Doyle for years. Homer says in the book that the stance line isn't that important as long as it's not askew to the extreme. Good explanation. Thanks
"Looked pretty easy". "Can be." You will get there" Haha. Just discovered the closed swing. So far it has worked like magic. Thanks for bringing it all together.
Closed stance may help you from casting. But once you don't do that anymore. Move to the open stance. Start with your 56 degree wedge, pw, and 9 iron for perfecting it. You will flush your irons every time
He mentions Fred Couples who uses an open stance but also has a very upright swing, but then says you have to swing flat and keep hands below shoulders.
The club itself helps to determine our definitive lead arm positioning at the top. For example, if the shaft is well over the plane (across the line) at the top, then our lead arm, wherever it is, is flatter defined by the corresponding plane. JW
Your feet are parallel to one another, more or less symmetrically. The line connecting your toes points left of the target more than a parallel left line would with a square stance.
Are the feet even in the open stance or the lead is a little bit lower than the rear foot. I think I see a drop, but don't wanna be fooled by camera angle.
@@theopenstanceacademy487 ... Hmmmm, I mean, are the feet even and just angled open, or are we supposed to be square with them and drop the lead foot back a bit to be open.
You should try it. I've been playing golf for about 55 years with that stance much of time. Lee Trevino did it and you know he was good and so was Jack Nicklaus.
Straycat Annie He meant well. Although I think the red sweater was a bit obvious. Would you believe this was one take? I thought Charles did very well, considering.
First of all. He is not. This concept is something I started doing with 7-pw prior to anyone ever teaching me or watching videos on it. I have perfect iron striking every time because of it. I lose no distance and started this in my 20s. I'm 37 now. And I hit it with a perfect baby draw every time. The BEST golfers in the world can hit the draw with open stance or slight controlled fade Lee Trevino, Fred couples and Hogan to name a few. For someone who fights the hook like me. This is essential. I also play clubs 4 degrees flat and strong grip. I outdrive all my weekend golfer friends by 30-50 yards. And lot of times I hit 3 wood further. I dial my irons with this. Don't hate it till you try it.

Just figured this out on my own after sklaffing medium irons for decades. Now I find out that people have being doing this all along!
Does your body line up square to the target & stance is open or does your body lines match your open stance line? Thank you & great video.
Mindy Blake wrote a couple good books on the open stance swing years ago. I like the ability to rotate through the shot better
What about wedges ? How would we set up to hit wedges in tht open stance

Can a senior get similar assistance from a closed stance?
Short answer… nope. If we didn’t care about body health, speed, and repeatability it would though.
What is the weight distribution?

It depends on what your intention is with your ball. JW
It works for Fred Couples and it works for me.
and for Lee TREVINO

Freddie finishes low in spite of a very strong left hand grip. Couldn’t provide better evidence of a flat swing.
How should the shoulders align when using this approach?
I recommend shoulders square to your target.
