    Looked to me that Trevino's butt would move away from the target line when he started his downswing and would stay there through impact which gave his arms a lot of room to make the swing Miller describes. It seems very subtle but I see Miller do that when he demonstrates Trevino's shot in this video. I could be wrong and often am.

    Did any of you actually see Miller play? In his day, he was one of the most accurate iron players ever. I read he clubbed to 2.5 yards which I have never heard anyone else even attempt. Miller might be called a "flash in the pan" because his career wasn't very long, but there was a stretch where his game was every bit as good as ANYONE who ever played the game. I think he is a great announcer, because he truly knows the game and he doesn't give idle praise. Maybe his ego rubs people the wrong way, but that doesn't discount his credibility.

    • @alexgreen1823
      @alexgreen1823 7 лет назад +1

      I don't deny his talent. I never saw him, I know he shot 63 at Oakmont and all that. I'm sure he's a great of the game. But his personality is the absolute worst. He acts like the GOAT and guess what-- he's not, and he's not even close (not sure he's even top 20). I don't care about small sample sizes. Last year Jason Day was going to take over the golfing world. Dustin Johnson was going to win every tournament this year. Jordan Spieth was going to surpass Tiger Woods, people said in 2015. The key to true greatness is consistency and longevity. I'd rank at least: Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Jones, Watson, Woods, Mickelson, Nelson, Snead, Hogan all above him. I'd put Seve and Faldo ahead of him. With just TWO major championships, he is more in the category of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Curtis Strange, Larry Nelson, Nick Price, Hale Irwin. All great major champions, but not the cream of the crop. You're probably right in that Miller was as good as anyone during a short period, but the same could be said for many, many golfers including many who I've already listed.

    • @AtEboli
      @AtEboli 7 лет назад +5

      I don't think he acts conceited at all. He just says what's on his mind, and doesn't try to sugarcoat anything. He could be more diplomatic at times, but more often than not, the points he makes are accurate and insightful. I don't understand at all the criticism he gets as an announcer.

    Interestingly enough he also played with a fairly shut face at the top of his backswing which allows him to do this move and not block it 40 yards right.

    • @winstonsmith11
      @winstonsmith11 3 года назад

      Exactly. So much of what people get wrong, starts with the face. Once it's open, you have to close it. Seems obvious. Problem with that is, that forward shaft-lean opens it. Most people don't understand this. Your brain won't let you take something that's already too open, and then open it more. The ball would go a mile to the right, like you said. So they flip at the ball, producing reverse shaft-lean, which closes the face, in a feeble attempt to square it up. It's no way to swing. Just don't let the face get too open in the first place, and getting to impact is so much easier.

      Johnny had an incredible stretch of golf in the mid to late seventies. He was tough to beat. His putter was his achillies heel, and led to his game unraveling -- right into the broadcast booth. We gained a great broadcaster, but lost a great player. damn putter!
      Remember watching Nicklaus and Miller at Olympic Country Club -- Miller's home course. Nicklaus at the age of 58 smoked Miller. Nicklaus torched the course, and Miller couldn't find a green or make a putt to save his life. It all stemmed from his putting woes and it bled into every aspect of his game, including the mental game. Olympic was a perfect example of what can happen to a player when the blade is inconsistent. Love Miller, and can only wonder what he would've accomplished if his putter remained true, because he was one determined and competitive SOB. Just the same, he's given the world a unique perspective from the broadcast booth. God works in mysterious ways.

    • @dennbb
      @dennbb 10 лет назад

      He also dipped because he started the club back outside and pulled his right elbow into his side on the downswing and swinging inside. I learned to swing that way from a Trevino book. That chasing the ball look is from keeping the clubhead from turning over, which makes the right arm take longer to straighten in the follow through.

    • @DavidLee-oc4qd
      @DavidLee-oc4qd 7 лет назад

      Hogan said he drove the right hand right down the plane line, not inside. It does go inside due to the left shoulder going inside, but nevertheless, he did drive the right hand down the plane line. How much extra he go in linear deviation is a guess. Maybe an inch or two? Same for Moe Norman. Trevino drove the right shoulder, same effect.

      @@nigelburkitt6365 No, Miller is correct. In 1971, Trevino went on the Mike Douglas show (shortly after winning 3 National Opens), and Douglas - a golfer himself - asked Lee for a tip. Trevino said he kept it very simple (paraphrasing slightly): "At address, the back of my left hand is square and pointing at the target. I keep it pointing at the target at impact, and well after I've hit the golf ball." He demonstrated the motion to Douglas, and it was essentially what Johnny Miller is saying.
