Did you notice Kevin was singing all through the song when he wasn't beat boxing? The whole time. And he's the beginning note of the dum-de-dums. He's there the whole time vocally.
You speak to them smiling while performing this, but you sir, are doing the same. The pure joy you shared enjoying this was so refreshing! This group always makes me happy!
This is such a classic for them, that they still perform regularly in their Christmas concerts! Just for your own fun, there's a nice live performance that they did this past 2023 holiday season during a SiriusXM/TT radio interview. It's posted on PTXWeekly News channel, both as an isolated clip of the song, and as part of the longer interview they did. This time includes Matt. They are just sitting there on stools in a line, and singing perfectly!
the cool thing about pentatonix is that they don't do anything in the studio that they can't perfectly recreate live. I've heard them perform this live, it sounds exactly the same.
I just loved your reaction to this cover! You experience music so kinetically - I'm envious. Thank you so much for sharing your reaction - as well as your analysis!
You look like my nephew with that great big smile and I love your joyful enthusiasm! Judging from your reaction to this, you would absolutely love their version of Carol of the Bells!
(On performing) At a Seal concert last year he told us: “This is not about me standing up here singing a song or trying to sell a record… This is about us sharing an experience.”
One of my very favorite songs! I would love to hear you react to RISE by Super fruit + Mario Jose and Brian Justin Crum + Mary Lambert. It is astonishingly great!! Also Forestella would be a great place to listen to very good performances. Sending you hugs.
I'll be the first to admit I don't really have a musical ear, so you highlighting these details helps me appreciate the finer points more. I think what PTX always seems to manage to do so well, even if they vary up the song a fair bit, is find the .. vibe(?) of the song, the recognizable sound. In fact very often I find myself preferring their version : )
Often times, you may hear musicians call a feeling they have about something a nebulous term such as flow, mojo, vibe, groove, spark, etc. Ultimately, it's whatever feels right and it's not limited to musicians; anyone who enjoys music can call it whatever they want since we all engage with music on some profound level. Having musical knowledge just helps me appreciate music more understanding the finer details that I hope to keep sharing with audiences who may not be so knowledgeable in music. In many aspects, I prefer this version as well =)
True to the motto "Christmas is when PTX sings Christmas carols", I would be interested in your opinion on the interpretation of Silent Night. I'm already looking forward to your rousing reaction (your enthusiasm and good mood is contagious - more of it please)
I love how this starts out sounding very old world European bounce. Then they just take off like a run away train. I think they really capture the feeling and attitude of the song. They are so masterful in their arrangements of the songs they do. So good at keeping the original feel of the song but putting their epic spin on it and making it their own. They are not just singers and song writers but they are actors and play writes as well. They are acting out their parts with feeling and evoking emotions. They write in parts that each one will be portraying and acting out. I have to to agree that Avi's deep notes don't get enough love. He is just... EPIC!! The ending is very reminiscent of Russian dance. They just take off on a galloping rant !! So Cool !! Thanks for the breakdown. And I hope you check out Their songs "Kissed by a Rose" and "I Rise" , a couple of their newest ones.
As if 100 minutes of your live stream wasn't enough, I found this reaction in your PTX playlist. I really enjoyed it, but It boggles my mind that it only had 5 views. Maybe a Christmas song at the end of July is the reason. You should revisit and repost this in December. Your analysis was fun, spot on and informative and should be seen by more people. BTW: Pentatonix doesn't record anything that they cannot do live. So if you do plan revisit this song by PTX, check out the live versions (Rachael Ray show / Jimmy Kimmel). It is just as good. Thanks Dan.

Oh goooosh I didn’t enjoy reaction to PTX so much in the longest time! Thank you for that!

I am having a TERRIBLE morning, but your exuberant reaction is helping me a lot. Thank you for sharing your soul in these reactions.

They have an ethos of providing real (unprocessed) music to their fans. From the studio and on stage.

Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo
You would really love a live performance of Avi's.

Personally, I prefer Matt’s blending with the band. It’s just a matter of preference. Recommend their video of O Holy Night.
❤
Geoff Castellucci also did this song on his channel several years ago with 3 of his clones.

What does he mean Kevin isn't singing? Kevin is a higher tenor than Mitch, and he definitely sings in those polyphonic passages.
I also think this is a fantastic arrangement of this song. The only other version that comes close is Geoff Castalluci's version, which I also love. ❤
Really! Practice to execute so well. Rather, just use the new tech to it's fullest when it comes to production.
This was not a boxing match. Geez
Different ppl experience music differently..sorry he actually got excited and moved by it..
