Idris Murphy talks with Maria Stoljar in his studio

Idris Murphy is one of Australia’s leading landscape painters. He was inspired from an early age by the work of Matisse but, as he later explored what it meant to paint the Australian landscape, it was the way the Indigenous artists saw the land that influenced him to take into account both traditions. For Idris, colour is paramount, and he has explored its power in both oils and acrylics. He is also well known for his skilful use of metallic paints and collage.
Maria Stoljar interviewed Idris for the Talking with Painters podcast and this video is a collection of highlights from her first conversation with the artist in his studio in 2022. The second podcast episode (ep 140) is a recording from their conversation in front of an audience at the S.H.Ervin Gallery at the survey show of his work ‘Idris Murphy: BACKBLOCKS’. That exhibition was seen by thousands of visitors and it started at the Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra end ended at the Orange Regional Gallery. Curated by gallery director Terence Maloon, the exhibition included important works from the last 30 years of more than 50 years of work and there is footage from that exhibition in this video. Idris Murphy has won the Gallipoli Art prize and has exhibited in over 40 solo shows including a previous major travelling survey exhibition in 2009-2010. His work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of NSW and other state and corporate collections.
