  • Patrick Heron (30 January 1920 - 20 March 1999) was a British abstract and figurative artist, critic, writer, and polemicist, who lived in Zennor, Cornwall.
He was born in Yorkshire but moved to Cornwall when he was five. Cornwall was a very important place to him and his work.
I was the cameraman in the 1980s on this documentary which was shot mainly in Cornwall.
As someone who was not at all convinced about abstract art at the time this film was shot it helped me understand there was indeed something to this art form. It was shot on 16mm film, but this has been digitised from a VHS tape I had so the quality is not as good as I would have liked.

It’s a great doco, but the irony of a Pom talking about cultural imperialism is thick. Still, his mature output is gorgeous…

I don’t think his take on cultural imperialism has the same meaning as yours.
It’s about an “ownership” of the arts by the haves. The cultural elite as they see it.

@@itsjudystube7439 in the context of the documentary he was talking about the US, I believe. Which is certainly culturally imperialist, and globally, but still, any Englishman doesn’t really have grounds on which to argue about it given their history!

Just like Australasia's treatment of its aboriginal peoples then..

      The art is good
.. it's the snobbery of that era that's getting to me
