    I've pretty much given up deciding what piece of artwork someone else is gonna like. They always manage to surprise me.

    I don’t really have those issues- I only paint what I love and paint to show the wonderful thing i love. If other people love it too, i am glad if they choose to take it home.

    Tight or loose is not the issue. Does that painting convey emotions the artist intended to display?

    There are people who will be there to invest in a person's journey and potential. I remember seeing someone sell an art at the very beginning of his journey. Anybody in the room knew exactly what that art represented. It showed his frustration at trying to simply capture the human form then going ballistic afterwards. Somehow, it came out looking like Venom from spiderman lol. People would come buy and he would explain it. Of course, this was in a college setting and not a professional one, but still being in a place where multiple people who had far better art skills and defined work. People came to him and spoke. He sold it to someone although I don't know for how much. It wasn't the likeness, the countless foundations of art skills, etc. He captured an emotion that resonated with other humans on canvas. That's what drew people to it.

    I bet you can help more than oil painters. The way you speak is universal, so all painters can benefit from your insights and instruction or suggestions.

    Very thought provoking video. I find tight, photo realism much easier to produce than loose, painterly Impressionism. So of course all I want to do is the latter! ❤

    I guess i d buy the paint I like the most and if i can boost the morale and confidence of someone that isn’t sure of his talent, i might buy the one from the person that feel shy towards his work…

    If realistic art is easier to make, do it. Quite a statement to make. Based on the video, making impressionistic/painterly art requires finding a specific consumer base to sell to and it's also much harder. So, if addressing that larger consumer base is easier, why not do it and make bank? The reality is that making art of any type that people want to buy is very difficult. Let's not pretend that loose alla prima is some easier path to success that doesn't include most of the income coming from masterclasses / skillshare / coaching / RUclips / Instagram.

    I believe we're all artist. I just decided at 48 to express it. I just paint and I am proud of anything i sign. Whether someone wants it or not is not an issue for me. Seems people do love it.

    I believe I don't feel like an artist for some reasons: I started one year ago in my 40s and my paintings are so beginner that I don't feel comfortable calling myself an artist, even if I paint every weekend, I still cannot feel this way (I do not practice every day because of tendonitis). But I would love to become an artist and change my career from software engineer to an official painter (I love impressionism) . I loved your video, thank you for the inspiration ❤

    We have to define what a True Artist is to know if we are or not an Artist and for that first we have to define what realy ART is ??!!!!??
    But as modern trends want to break all the rules in matters of Art, to the point of seeing beauty even in ugliness, everything has been blurred and many non-artists can claim to be true artists and even make a big place for themselves in the Art market nowadays.

      I agree, especially when the 'artist' becomes 'famous' and then paints a huge canvas of about 2x1 metres size with only a uniform blue color ... and it sells for over a million US dollars!? Well, nice for him, but what has happened to 'art'.? And there are other similar even worst cases of 'abstract Art' that sold for over a million US dollars. I saw these cases mentioned in a program that aired on DSTV some months ago.

    It's funny, the commission that I've done I actually dislike because it's always a photo realistic copy of a family member. I'm never ever inspired by the photo or even the end result of my work. Even though I get paid for the work and the client seems pleased, I inwardly hate the results because it's not really whay I want to do. I don't like that style of work anymore. I want to draw/paint like John Singer Sargent or Robert Heindel etc. Argggg. By the way, ballet/dance tends to be a subject I create all the time. I LOVE what you've done with this painting! This is definitely where I'd like to go with my work. I've been trying to break a lifelong habit of tightness in my work.

      There are always inherent potential conflicts when achieving a credible, yet pleasing likeness, is the goal, because customer satisfaction, rather than mostly just pleasing yourself, is the ultimate goal. Which is why commissioned portraiture can be a tricky proposition.
      I think in such a situation the artist should be very clear in their mind what their artistic intent is (eg tight and highly realistic or loose and free and emotionally expressive), and in the case of commissioned works making sure that this gets communicated to the client or patron in advance.

    Bit confused by all the references to retirement. Nothing about painting loosely or wanting to sell artwork is retirement specific surely? I may be missing something obvious, but it just made me feel that this channel is not interested in my demographic. I might have followed otherwise as your painting is beautiful and I'm always interested in learning to paint more expressively.

    • @andrewlm5677
      @andrewlm5677 5 месяцев назад +6

      The demographic is people interested in watching someone paint. Probably a lot of overlap between this group and people interested in making money from painting but who strongly suspect they couldn’t sell enough to support themselves.
      I always wonder how much the looser painting style is a product of the fact that the less time one spends on a painting the more one makes per hour of their time (assuming the loose and tight paintings sell for the same amount).
      It seems like the real secret to making money is teaching aspiring painters how to do it (and convincing them they could also make money doing it as a side hustle).

    What are you doing at 1:40? Looks like you're erasing the paint away like you would with a kneaded eraser on a charcoal sketch. I've started doing that with q-tips so that i'm not trying to paint over a mistake and just blending it together. Are you using some kind of thinner on a clean brush?

    • @ChelseaLang
      @ChelseaLang  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's exactly what I'm doing. :) Thinner on a clean brush, or a silicone brush sometimes for the same effect! I do this when I realize I have a drawing error early in the block-in process.

    This video very much touches on my situation. I do photo realistic work, and I am fortunate in being very talented at it. I am also fortunate to be a good photographer, so I can work off great photos. But, I am attracted to some loose work too, and I just can't seem to do it! Conflicting emotions: I look back at the Old Masters, and the tight representative work they did was extraordinary. I still think that stuff is a whole lot more "art" than abstract scribblings and splashes. Another perspective on how to evaluate your own art is: do you want it hanging in your own house? My wife and I LOVE my representative works hanging in the house, and we are quite gutted when they get sold. So much so that I tend to paint a similar "copy" when one gets sold! Sales ARE very slow though. I would like to earn more (I am retired). I just don't know what to do. I am actually thinking of going COMPLETELY in a different direction for, say, half of my painting time: doing acrylic pouring etc.!
