- Department S was a British post-punk band formed in 1980, who took their stage name from the 1960s TV series.
Department S evolved from a previous punk/ska combo, Guns For Hire. They were both led by the enigmatic Vaughan Toulouse, who remained the frontman and driving force
Brilliant song always loved it. Sing it when I'm trying to find the vapour rub.
Nice
Subtle, nailed it 👍
Class
Quick👍
🤣🤣
Listening in 2022.... still a true classic from the 1980’s.
one of the better ones
one of all time classics
All these years later, I still love it.
pOpkDzKGsGzGzzv😅😅xv😅G😅gvgg😅vz😅😊J😢😢golppoppplO0😅😅😅😅
This is one of the most underrated songs from 1981.
Not on Jon Savage's 1980-1982 The Art Of Things To Come ?
I agree
Heard this on John Peel the week I arrived in London, broke, in 1981. Got a job in a pub in Fullam, bought the single. Goodbye.
As an annoying teenager my mates and I would stand outside the local vicarage singing this until the vicar came to the window and gave us a wave or if he was in a bad mood, told us to bugger off.
lol
Ha ha ha! Thanks for giving me a good laugh!
Don't believe you
🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely brilliant, and after all the years still has that edge!
I was doing something random and this song came into my head. Hadn't heard it since my college days. The mind is a baffling thing.... it was probably rattling around in there for 43 years then all the ducks lined up and here I am.
Dear ol' John Peel new his stuff, still got this on tape from when everyone taped his show every night!!!x
A timeless tune that still stands up very well today.......
my dad loved this song RIP DADDY X
This is a great song that I first heard about a year ago, when I was searching for information about the TV show Department S. I didn't know there was a band of that name. If only they could have written more great songs, they could have been a great band. I guess there a lot of bands who have a moment when lightning strikes, but it only strikes once, still better than never.
Fantastic song, with a great atmosphere of early 80's. Sounds a little bit like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees from that period, which is good. It's undoubtedly a masterpiece.
So underrated and so original even for it's time. This is powerful music.
Used to work in a shop and often had to phone another branch for things we needed. The guy we had to phone was called Vic.. Guess how EVERY call started..
I'm related to one of the guitarists! :-D He's my great Uncle!
Wow!!
Cool!
As a seventies kid (glam then the step-up to rock) I disliked eighties music intensely but this really struck a chord, Still love it today in 2023,
Another great band and song that completely passed me by...s'marvelous.
Susie Towers yes. Hi. Hayley. Here. This. Really. Does. Take. Me. Back. Don’t. Seem. That. Long. Ago. Though. Great. Band. Like. Too. See. The. Singer. Nowadays. Take. Care. Xxx
Your hearing aid is in the post.
So brilliant. I love this song.
This is the first time I've heard this track fully, i.e. with end effect, and it sounds even better than it did thirty years ago. Really sharp melodic guitar, good bass - not too overpowering, and minor keyboard wizardy. Should have done better than no.22 in the charts. 1981 saw some really original stuff in the charts and this single illustrates it perfectly.
Now 40 years ago! Life's a Roller coaster that just gets faster and faster.
I love this song... but ive just had it stuck in my head for the last 48hours. Imagine the torture of the words 'is vic there? (guitar riff) Is vic there?' over and over again non-stop for 2 days...
'Is Vic there'? No sorry he's at his Gran's, can I take a message.'Yes can you let him know Brian called'. Yes I'll let him know Brian. How are your Mum & Dad?. Their fine Mrs Cumberdale, thanks for asking.
Fuck love this tune, I have been strolling down memory lane and this came up. My tune as my name is Vick..
I'm here.
***** .
Victor Poirier haha...luv that
Victor Poirier Me too.. I am Vick..
Remember it being released and still listening in 24. It sounds even better with age against the crap that dominates the radio today.
A mate of mine where I work went to school with the lead singer of department S who grew up in Cornwall.
The night is young, the mood is mellow
& there's music in my ears
Say, is Vic there?
I hear ringing in the air
So I answer the phone
A voice comes over clear
Say, is Vic there?
The night is young, the mood is mellow
& there's music in my ears
Say, is Vic there?
I hear ringing in the air
So I answer the phone
A voice comes over clear
Say, is Vic there?

Say, is Vic there?
Is Vic there?
Is Vic there?
Is Vic there?
Is Vic there?
Is Vic there?
Well underated, better than Most of the crap now.
I don’t really understand this song, but it’s bloody brilliant....
I have worked it out - basically, he is trying to find out if Vic is there.
Love this song and have always thought it had a Hawkwind vibe with that guitar sound.
Heard it in a pub yesterday and it sounded fantastic. If only I had a time machine 😂😂
Heard this coming from the street while i was chilling in a airbnb in Londen, good memory
Heard this coming from the street
While chilling in a Airbnb
In London, gooood memory
Is Vic there?
I remember walking past red phone boxes and the phone would ring and this would happen lol 70s kid great times
Opening riff sounds like Echo Beach by Martha and Muffins
Martha later preformed with the Associates, a Scottish band fae Dundee. She is on a couple of their videos with Billy's beloved greyhounds.
Also a bit of dead kennedys going on , holiday in cambodia
God....a quick flash back to my teens....
Used to give this a spin several times a night when I was spinning the discs It has to be heard at volume just mind blowing through 16 x 12" gpds driven by 400 watts of simms watts custom tube amps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard this song playing in the oxfam on drury lane, London a few weeks ago. I didnt recognise the song at all, but remembered some of the lyrics and typed them into google and found it. Isnt t'internet wonderful? In the good old days I would have had virtually no chance of finding this simple but great song :) The quality of my life has been improved
Its shite.
Havnt heard this song since the 80s is Vic there
Saw them live in Hammersmith, London, they were a warm up for Siouxsie and the Banshees!
You lucky boogar
I listen to this for reasons of nostalgia but can't help doing the wolf howl and then swinging me pants. Still waiting for Vic to answer the phone though. ;O)
this reminds me of my first date with a girl , which was a bit of a disaster and left me feeling humilated and down
since then i've not been able to tell if the song is depressing or if i find it depressing cos of what it reminds me of
same with einstein a go go
Haven't heard this track FOR YEARS!! 👍
super track!
Just heard Kaiser Cheifs, I predict a Riot. The music break in the middle always reminds of this so had to listen. A great song from the 80's often overlooked.
Norwich City College of Further and Higher Education 1980. Public Administration extension Certificate. Me and Garry W listening to this on a Sony Walkman between lectures saying Bollocks to the world. It gets no better
Radio One late night staple back in the day.

Great tune. Thanks.
I knew a bloke Vic Nap from Woolwich. This song reminds me of Vic. 2 gangs composped of 14. It could have been a big fight. I walked up to Vic, who was the leader of his gang. Pat Garaty was our leader. I said, Wot you drinking." Instead of putting the bottle over my head, he said, "'ave a taste mate. Mackinsons." I called over the chaps and the lot for us got on. 28. We owned the area. Thanks Vic.
a
Excellent song
Punk was over by 1980, in fact 1978, but i still love this song.
Sometimes I feel responsible for keeping music like this alive.
Am fair lookin forward to seein them play at The Wickerman this weekend :D
I knew a bloke Vic Nap from Woolwich. This song reminds me of Vic.

🖤🎸
Arantxa Hernández is arantxa hernandez there 🎸 🎶 🤘🤘😎
love this song
And here I had it… a list of official access codes from Sharp Eddie. Don’t ask me how he got them? I opened the Dream Corp file first and within seconds I was on and in… Here it was, a list of Madigans client details appearing across my eye, which conveniently ended two weeks prior to the day before. Exactly the date when Soli Raina made her complaint, Dream Corp legals or Ernie himself must have erased the recent histories... Surely this was an illegal manipulation of commercial information?
Flippin brilliant
Emotional
If this was played way faster, wouldn't it be reminiscent of the Dead Kennnedys' Holiday in Cambodia? I mean the chords, I suppose.
black (colin vearncombe) singing smiths mixed by the stranglers.?
lloyd cole singing the doors produced by wall of voodoo?
