This is so typical of you. Your idea of 'brief' or 'quick' is nothing like most of the young workers or today. Even when you're sick with a cold, your work ethic won't allow you to do a job part way. It has to be right in your eyes which shows what a great craftsman you are and a great example for future generations. Hats Off to you, John!
Beautiful! I love how you admire the quality of older hardware and revive it! Of cause, they sold crap in the old days as well, but the good stuff simply survived and needs a bit of love now and then :-) Greetings from Germany!
I always find it amazing how well built stuff can last a long time. Today's goods are all disposable and have a very short life cycle. Thanks for another great video!!
My Old Atlas Mill has one of those GE Motors on it and I have a spare that I completely restored inside and out, they're a joy to just plug in an listen to them run, sort of a soothing hum to them............I'd bring over a Pot of Chicken Soup but I know you're a Vegetarian so maybe eat some Garlic, supposedly it's Antiviral........If nothing else it'll keep the Vampires away.
Sorry to hear you are under the weather 🤢 I have just got over Covid four weeks later it’s horrible great video scout love the old motors they came up great god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿😷😳🤢👏🙈
Another great video. Too bad about the affliction. When I was a child my mother would take along a hot plate on holidays. No kitchen in the motel, not problem, there were four little ones to feed. Reminds me of the cereal in boxes in the morning. She had grown up during the depression, traveling was an appreciated luxury, needed to control costs.
Glad your feeling better! Motor runs smooth, Mr. John!! I enjoy trading...growing up that's all we did...and its certainly a lost art! Have a good week!
Great video 👍 That red wing motor cleaned up good, looks great and what a smooth sound , ready to be put back in service . That G E Motor also cleaned up nice , what a great motor , nice sounding smooth running motor. Those motors will run and run great motors. That Century Motor would clean up beautifully just like that GE motor. I think it would look better then the GE motor. It would be nice if you can rig it so you can run it on 120v or 220 volts, but cleaned up that motor would look awesome. Hope you feel better soon. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Wednesday. 😃👍👍
I do enjoy watching you clean up those old motors. So satisfying to see them run, they sound strong and smooth. Hope you’ll feel better soon. My son just had a cold, slowed him down about 2 days. But he’s over it now.
Great motor cleanup on both. I have a bunch of motors on my shelf. I also have a Century motor on my shelf and will practice on other motors before I attempt that one. Feel better. Best Regards, John
Love the old motors. I've found that recently it's cheaper to buy a piece of outdated machinery (outdated because of CNC mostly) with a motor than it is to buy an old motor.
Great job on those beautiful motors. The GE is such a simple yet effective design. I would be a little nervous with the 50/50 near any windings but it sure cleans up the outside surfaces nicely. I am excited to see you approaching the Century motor. You will love having it in your collection.
I wish you good improvement. In moment as such my father use to take a hot bath and then he went into the bed for sweating. It helps him all times. It was a very good episode. Thanks
Nice old motors had style to them With colds or allergies drink lots of water and liquids If I have a can of soda I have the same amount of ice so I get my water..Chicken Noodle soup is still good stuff for a cold
Always enjoy your Motor restorations, that one you linked to is a great reference source, I still need to get to a couple of mine that need some attention ! Take care, and get well soon !
SWEET motor fixes and I can't be stingy on the 50/50! Sorry you're feeling bad but that mess is going around all over. I think it has a lot of 'HELP' but what do I know. So HEAL, Buddy and BLESSINGS 2 U!
Scoutcrafter I like this motor. Its a very interesting design, external cage armature and wound rotor. Could please show the nameplate on the next mishmosh?
I've never seen a motor with the style of "chuck" the Red Wing has, weird. Nice and quick clean-up! I have been using a vintage GE 1/3 HP washing machine motor (probably 60-65 years old now) as a dedicated wire wheel on my workbench for at least 40 years or so. I use it many times a week and sometimes for long periods at a time. I do lubricate it every few years or when I remember, and it has never failed, still runs true and the bearing s are still good. Hard to kill those old motors.
Nice job on the motors. I hope to find something similar in my travels. I too had the man cold about a month ago. I typically don't get sick but it had hold of me for about a week. So glad to be over it. Hope your recovery is swift. Have a great day. Jim
I have that same GE motor. I have owned it for over 40 years and has been used for different uses over the years. I have a Made in China Wilton bench grinder I got at our local Habitat Restore that was new in the box for $15.00. Well made and when you turn it off, it takes 1 minute and 45 seconds to stop turning.
Your fast clean up on the red wing dental lathe came out sweet. I have a Baldor that I did a couple years ago. It’s amazing how nice the other motor came out just cleaning. I have a century motor to do to. I will be shrinking my motor collection. I enjoyed your clean ups and I hope you get to feeling better. Thank You
Nice job on the motor. Wick oiling has been around for decades. When I worked on sewing machines, you would run into wicks on a daily basis. With all the Chinese crap motors, these days; a motor is a consumable anymore. Nice to see a couple of really good ones come across your channel.
I am sorry to know you have a cold but I am glad you are getting better. This was very interesting and motors sound really good! Thanks for sharing this.
Great video Scout, I have an old Ryobi 8” bench grinder that takes forever to wind down and I seriously thought there was something wrong with it because it takes so long😂. I guess not. You love your 50 / 50 so when I came across a short article about it I immediately thought of you. I have sent you a copy via email and hope you find it interesting. You’ll need to verify it of course but it might make a good video. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Always enjoy the moters. I have been cleaning some moters on some other projects. I am always worried I am going to mess up the windings. I have had good luck but wondered what you was spraying on yours. Get feeling better. Thanks
The windings are varnish coated so I only vacuum them clean with a soft brush and leave them be! No need to clean them unless they are covered in gunk. 😃👍
Pretty cool to see you cover one of the quarter horse GE wound rotor motors! I have just about the same exact one, except mine has the traditional four “feet” (two on each end bell). Extremely smooth runners, a great quality product meant to last!
The reason I don't run the motors too much before I service them is because most have been sitting for years and I don't want to run them dry. I lubricate everything! =D
Would that motor have been in an appliance or something? I have heard that the old motors in older washing machines were good? Great video man hope you get to feeling better soon.
Nice work. Get well. It's to bad GE decided to dabble in banking instead of sticking with what they do best. Certainly no longer the company they were.
In the older motor resto video link, you mentioned you were going to explain in a future video why you turned the cord mount direction and put the pulley on the left. If you did, I missed it. Could you readdress it?
I believe the cord box that holds the brushes can mount either way cord up or cord down, the brushes still make contact. Interesting design. Also I believe these were ambidextrous so you could mount the bell housings on either side. Very universal motor!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter It was a 2 year project there is another plant across the street from the ones restored. That hopefully will get redone soon. RUclips won't let me post links to the news station story about the project
I have a question I have a old delta electric motor that was converted to a bench grinder and I was wondering if your can change the direction of the rotation?
Curious about rags. You seem to go through lost and lots of rags. What do you do woth them after use? Toss, or wash? I myself generally toss as to not get oilly rags stains in my washer. Whats your secret?
Hi Dan- You are so right when dealing with really dirty jobs like motors I will try to use disposable towels or old rags for the worst part then switch to cleaner rags for polishing and waxing. Then save them for next projects dirty work. I always save my old T shirts and sweat pants for rags. 😃👍

Bob's your uncle!!!! And just like that, she's back in action after all those years. Looks beautiful!!!
Hope you are feeling better! Man colds are bad, and we don't get enough sympathy from our better halfs either.

Try Vicks Vaporub. Under the nose and On-The-Go chest. You will wok as smooth as the motors you just rehabbed. Allan

Being active helps break up those colds too.
Hi John, glad your feeling better....
Sorry your not feeling well. Enjoyed the video, much appreciated. The motor is so cool 😎.
John the Redwing reminds me of a Baldor
John, hope you feel better soon… colds suck!
Safety Susan says motors have to stop as soon as the switch is turned of. I like the one you over hauled sounds really sweet.

I have a touch of a cold myself, all sinuses right now. Those old motors sure do run great. Super quiet and smooth!
I always loved how quiet and smooth running those old motors were. There is some crap going around. Feel better.

Terry- You are so right, I am always careful not to get any solvents on the windings as it could easily penetrate the varnish. 😃👍
Feel better. You sounded fine during the live.
Great video thanks for sharing your time ☕👍🇬🇧
Great video SC. I actually originally found your channel way back when you did a pale greenish painted motor. The Emerson pancake
That motor is such a great motor! Runs like a top! Thanks!
I wish you good improvement. In moment as such my father use to take a hot bath and then he went into the bed for sweating. It helps him all times. It was a very good episode. Thanks
Yes- Some colds can be sweat out of the body. Some others just have to run their course. 😃👍
You get yourself well young man, that is the most important restoration project you have right now. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
Sorry you're under the weather! Feel better, my friend! Great job on those motors!
How smooth those motors run is so pleasant to the ears. I'll have to check out your older video again 👍

Right. Sounds like you need a cup of English Breakfast with toast and marmalade.
My Grandmother loved marmalade with the strands of orange peel in the jelly. =D
A fine job on a fine motor. May it run another hundred years 👍. Though I expected you to put a new cord on it 🤔! I know you have more than a few! 😉
The cord on this is awesome! No cracks in jacket and Pure Copper strands! The real stuff... =D
Love motors and their rebuild vids. As usual - nice video.

Thanks for another great episode. Beautiful work as always. Glad you whipped that cold in a couple of days and are coming back strong.
Nice job. I've always been a little apprehensive about messing around with electricity. Feel better soon.
George these motors are just a joy to work on, like a straight 6 engine from the early 60's! =D
I always put dettol in my bath to keep a cold away…it works for me, I rarely get a cold even when the mrs gets one. Drives her mad

Depending on what you have on the shafts it will determine spin time. Bare shafts have lowest, large grind stones have much higher. 😃👍

I am sorry to know you have a cold but I am glad you are getting better. This was very interesting and motors sound really good! Thanks for sharing this.
You might try taking a Zinc supplement which has helped me avoid the colds for many years now. 🤧
I take Zinc every day but doubled up when I got the cold. They say it really helps with the duration. Thanks! 😃👍

Another awesome motor back into service 👍 and hope you shake that cold very soon I just got over one about a week ago too.
Great motors.
Panacea = Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. Vick's VapoRub is the Mexican Panacea.
In future motors, please consider before and after rpms and body temperature after X minutes running.
The reason I don't run the motors too much before I service them is because most have been sitting for years and I don't want to run them dry. I lubricate everything! =D
Nice.
Cool.
If it were ASMR, no music. Only shop sounds. 🇺🇸
Yes- When I film in fast speed on the phone it doesn’t record sound. I wonder why? 😃👍
Gotcha 👍👍👍🔩🔩
The Red Wing is described as a dental lathe ? Used in labs hence the extravagant price used and new with attachments
They still make them! 😃👍
You got the Covids Dude!! You gotta stay in the basement for 10 days now without food or water!!☻
LOL I took an at home covid test and I think I'm pregnant!
Would that motor have been in an appliance or something? I have heard that the old motors in older washing machines were good? Great video man hope you get to feeling better soon.
Brian these motors were truly universal- Countless were made and used in everything from tools to appliances to oil burners! =D
I have my fathers old Dayton grinding wheel that I need to service. I just have to find the time.
It’s a time consuming and messy job! 😃👍

Nothing worse than Man flu 🤧. Hope you better soon 👍
nice. i wondered if there were oil cups on that unit. did you have a felt washer for next to the bushings or just the packing?
I just ordered some felt wicking, I will show the installation when it comes... =D

RUclips studio but I use all Dan Lebowitz! He’s great! 😃👍

Could you help me out with some advice on a replacement cord for the GE motor? I have a similar model number and frame type.
Hey John, I know you don't like using your sand blaster due to the finish it leaves, but are there any good uses for it?

Not on these- Just a hole on top and a holed cap on the bottom....
