The wedding of Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece to millionaire heiress Marie Chantal Miller took place in London today (Saturday).
The ceremony saw the biggest gathering of royals in Britain since the Prince and Princess of Wales married 14 years ago.
Distinguished guests arrive for the wedding by the coachload, amongst them the Spanish King Juan Carlos and his queen Sophia.
Guests such as Queen Elizabeth of England enjoyed rather more dignified transport, in cars.
King Hussein of Jordan was another of the 450 smiling guests at this, the largest gathering of royals in Britain since the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece is the heir to a throne that no longer exists.
The monarchy in Greece was abolished in a referendum 21 years ago. The former King Constantine fled Greece for London following a military coup in 1967.
Crown Prince Pavlos relished the enthusiasm of the hundreds of fans who crowded behind barriers to cheer the guests' arrival.
His bride, 26-year-old Marie-Chantal Miller, was born in London, lives in New York, and is heiress to a fortune.
The daughter of the American-born millionaire Robert W. Miller, she wore a dress by the designer Valentino, and reportedly has a dowry worth 200 million dollars.
The couple met at a party in New Orleans and both claim to have fallen in love immediately.
On a skiing holiday in Switzerland, Pavlos proposed.
As the ceremony was conducted, King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie looked on.
The proceedings were conducted mainly in Greek.
There was an exchange of gold rings and wedding crowns.
As the couple walked three times around the altar, symbolizing joy, rose petals cascaded from the ceiling.
The wedding has rekindled debate about the monarchy in Greece.
The Greek Prime Minister, socialist Andreas Papandreou, refused his invitation to the wedding, and forbade any member of the Greek parliament to attend.
He believed the invitations from the King were part of a scheme to restore the monarchy in Greece.
For now, the royal family does not expect this to happen.
In September, Pavlos starts a job with a ship-brokering firm in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The new Crown Princess Pavlos will return to her art history studies in New York.

Queen Elizabeth II rarely attends the weddings of foreign royalty, the fact that she went to this wedding is a huge complement and shows how important the Greek Royal Family really was.

Her husband comes from the Greek royal family. Plus these guys are all cousins. She and her husband Philip are second cousins and they are both uncles to the ex king of Greece. There is no way of restoring the monarchy in Greece. Constantine's kids and grandchildren don't even speak the language properly.

Are you aware that her husband is Greek? Those are his cousins or something along those lines.

@@majidaljaburi7870 That won't make a change anyway. The monarchy was formally abolished in Greece in 1974 via referendum. Constntine isn't even a Greek himself. He comes from the Danish royal family and these people were forced as kings to Greece in the 1850s by Britain. His descendants are not only foreigners, but they can't even speak the language. He didn't play his cards right.

Is there a chance that the Greek monarchy will be restored one day?

    • @kostasfanourakis6035
      @kostasfanourakis6035 3 года назад

Probably not ....The Greek Royal family was exiled from Greece in 1967 by the dictaroship(junta) and later the greek goverment rejected his return to Greece as Greek people dont need a royal family because every power is on the hands of the greek democratic republic parliament ....

Our last King was Constantine Palaiologos, who died in 1453. European puppet "kings" established in our country since 1832 by foreign countries are/were not Kings of the Greeks
