    I'm from Pembroke Massachusetts. I've been a sheetrocker all my life. In the mid-90s we started hanging sheetrock for a developer down in Hanson Massachusetts. And they had a guy that would sub out house frames. For them. All by himself. Bobby Rose. The Legend grows and grows. He would time out all his walls. And his work. Too when he knew there would be other trades on the job or working on the one next door. Ask everybody to come over after lunch. For a half an hour. And he would build a whole level of a house. The most amazing Carpenter I've ever met in my life. Super add. So he couldn't even keep an apprentice he was sad. Bobby Rose Legend grows and grows. The big house builders they got the blue trucks I forget the name. But they're the most legit house builders in town. Used to work with him. Someone tell me if I'm lying

    I'm also a do-it-myselfer....20'x24' garage/shop....from pouring the slab to framing the walls, siding, and roofing, electrical (50 amp sub-panel), all with no help. Just takes a little ingenuity and a strong back. It can be done.

    As someone who also enjoys doing these types of projects solo, I wanted to congratulate you on your hard work & great job. We built(erected) a 40x75x14 steel building about 16 yrs ago. It has been awesome but it is too small as we have commercial trks. Plan on tearing down & putting up a 50x150(100 enclosed)x18 with 20' lean to's on both sides for 5k sqft enclosed & 7k sqft "shade". Wish I could do it all myself but of course will have to have some help with it for certain parts.

    Same system on the truss install that I used in building a garage by my self. I also added a spacer on each end on the sill so when I pulled the truss up it was in the right spot.. Good job you learn to get creative when working by yourself.....$1,500.00 dollars cost ???? more like $15,000.00 check your receipts...if you kept them...

    I'm so impressed! Your video really helped me....not just with tactile info, but more with knowing you just went for it & did it yourself.. I've been psyching myself up to re-do a roof that is falling in & than strengthening an already existing 3 sided horse enclosure.. I've been sooo scared to start as I have little (I.e zero) construction skills... My husband just chuckles & rolls his eyes when I say I want to do this lol.. He thinks the whole thing should be torn down & new structure built instead. But that would be so expensive & my thinking is 'what the heck', we have power tools & I have a brain + I'm sorta strong for a chick, so I'm gonna go for it... I mean what can go wrong, right ;) ;) P.s. IF I get this done??? I'll send u a picture of what I started with & what I turned it into... hopefully that'll be a solid, nice looking 3 sided barn, built from all the scrap & reclaimed wood I've stockpiled... And IF I completely moe-moe it? Well I'll at least send a pix of the bonfire we'll light in celebration for my efforts.. So either way it'll be a win/win :)

    For easier raising and also or just for flipping, try using snatch block and rope to help lift into position and clamp on two guide post of 2x4 on each end/side for the truss to slide against so it stays far enough and keep if from sliding against the previous one as you flip said truss upright with pre-nailed purlins for spacing. A Snatch block or two will help reduce the lifting work as opposed to how he did it.
    Yes you can set the purlins on top of or between the trusses.
    Also check out *RR Buildings* channel for a stage/step by stage/step for first time DIYers who really like more perfection for more helpful tips and hints.
    Hope this helps

    Nice looking barn. You did a great job. Does "1 month of weekend work to complete" mean you worked 8-12 hours per day for 4 weekends (8 days x 8-12 hours) with very little help to totally complete this project from start to finish? If so, you have no peers. I want you to come work for me please sir. It would take me 4 weekends to paint the damn thing.

    This is the exact size barn I was planning to build. I was concerned about how to handle the trusses, now that's not a problem.
    Too bad all the construction steps were not shown, such as how the trusses were secured to the top plate.
    The ends of the trusses, where they lay on top of the plate, are not flush to the plate, so how are they attached??
    I'd like to use a hurricane strap of sorts.

    I'm buying my first piece of land in the country, starting with almost nothing.
    I'll be by myself for at least a year with two dogs, a tent, some cooking supplies, a few battery operated lights, a car and my whits!

    how much did it all cost for the total what i was going to do is put tin all around the outside and have the board on the side/wall/ and have the boards spaced out far enough so each end and starting piece of tin would be over lapped a little and can be screwed or nailed to the board which one is better and then have a 2 by 6 in the middle on the first row of tin on bottom for strength and then on the inside use some panels we have laying around the farm that i'ant being used on the inside so the cows don't scratch or damage the tin and have the cement that holds the edge poles meaning the poles on the edge of the whole barn 1 1/2 or 2 feet high so i can pick the manure up better then if the cement hight is too small

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 6 лет назад

      Nails for shear and screws for tensile;
      nail (smooth shank, not ring, can go with spiral for more holding strength) for wood
      screw for all sheet metal outside and in
      nail (smooth or spiral shank) for roof and siding shingles
      If you want more nail pull out resistance then go with spiral shank, but never use ring shank as once they are in they stay in forever and completely impossible to just pull out without causing damage.

    So the posts are 4x4? You said they were 3ft in the ground so did you get 4x4x12 and the posts are 9ft above ground? I'd like a tall roof in mine it'll be a garage. And you used osb for the roof, shouldnt plywood be used for durability?

    • @littleshopofsawdust1157
      @littleshopofsawdust1157 7 лет назад

      7/16" OSB is used quite often for roof sheathing. It tends to be more forgiving for periods where there is more moisture in the air. It's also very inexpensive. I'd prefer it to be on 16" centers myself, but that's just me. If you're uncomfortable with that, I'd use at least 1/2" fir CDX with at least 4 plies.

    No knee bracing on the columns? How is this structure braced other than depending on the ground to provide bracing by the columns being buried?

    • @aaronallison4603
      @aaronallison4603 9 лет назад +11

      Johnston and Curtis, in 1984, performed actual testing on post frame buildings with and without knee braces. They concluded, “As loads were increased, the effect of the knee bracing became insignificant.” The study found knee bracing in post frame buildings provides very little support for horizontal loads. Two years later, as a result of their studies, Gebremedian and Woeste concluded, “Knee braces added little stiffness to the post-frame building analyzed."
      In all likelihood, pole buildings being proposed as utilizing knee braces are a result of lack of knowledge upon the part of those who are providing the building. The knee braces add no benefit to the overall strength of the structure, while potentially adding loads into the roof trusses, which they were not designed to carry. In the right combination of circumstances, this could result in a catastrophic failure of the building.

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 6 лет назад

      So few still think angle braces are still required after a roof is installed, while they are used for spans over 60 foot for support as the roof is being installed, they are more detrimental and can cause damage if not practical to keep attached once the roof is covered as they just become and obstruction in the way if left on.
