    Hi. I came across your adventures just recently and went back to your 1st video 3 years ago. I have watched most of your vids and they are great. Your Europe trip have bought back memories of my wife and my trip to Europe in 1984. No MBL, no internet ...only strip maps and post cards for comms with family in Melbourne Australia. We had bought a VW Combi Campervan that was from an Aussie co based in London and I drove 20,000 Kms in 14 countries in 2.5 months. I still have the 7 hrs of VHS video of that trip. Keep up your great travels...

    Some suggestions for locations:
    Germany: The Lahn river, with around Limburg an der Lahn an old iron mine, castles, canoe rental, animal parks. Dresden, Leipzig, "Saxon Switzerland".
    Netherlands: Skip Amsterdam and go straight to Friesland (Leeuwarden, Sneek, Drachten), National park "Hoge Veluwe", the cities of Nijmegen, Den Bosch, Maastricht. The whole southern part of Limburg is mountain bike country.
    Belgium: Brugge, Gent, Namur, Dinant. Again, the Ardennes great for mountain biking. Luxemburg: Vianden castle, more Ardennes.
    France: Skip the big city and visit the small villages in the Central Massif, in Bretagne, at the foothills of the Alps, Ardèche, Pyrenees, right through Andorra to Spain with so many beautiful medieval cities, some Moorish like Cordoba and Granada, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca, Toledo. The Extremadura is a rugged region that resembles some parts of WA.
    Portugal: Lisbon is beautiful but so are Oporto, Coimbra, Evora, Loulé and many seaside villages.
    Italy: Valle d'Aosta with the Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa mountains, Pavia, Padova, Ravenna, All cities between Florence and Naples basically, Palermo, the "heel of the boot" where you might still see "emptier" beaches, the whole of Sardinia, I can go on and on and on and I only covered a few countries!

    Nigel and Sue - well done - we too are Aussies and bought a LHD Hymer 544 from the owners in Wales and did 66,000 km through 28 countries in Europe over 2 years. We paid for our Hymer before we left Aus and are aware of some of the challenges of buying, registering and insuring a motorhome in Europe as non European residents. We estimated it would have cost around $100k to rent a motorhome for 2 years so we bought one and sold it for about $1k less than we paid. We bought our second motorhome, a Mobilvetta, about 2 months before Covid struck and put it into storage. We cancelled and rebooked our flights 3 times. We finally sold the Mobilvetta after owning it for 18 months without ever stepping inside it. We are now looking for our third motorhome and plan on returning to Germany in March. Interested in seeing your Video regarding your experience with CarTurf. Regards Rob and Krys

    Converted sprinters are very expensive. The base vehicle alone is now heading to €80k. For a new convserion you’re looking at 150k and up. So once someone has invested insomething at that level they're not going to sell it on

  • @heijxje
    @heijxje Месяц назад

    The reason you don't see many Sprinter converted campers probably is weight. In Europe, we are allowed to drive vans of up to 3500 kg with a standard car licence (Category B, whereas above that you need a class C or truck licence. A 313/316 Sprinter probably does not leave much headroom to kit out before you go over the GVM of 3500 so the basis has to be smaller. The 516's you see around are all well over 3500 kg and are driven on a truck licence. Four wheel drive would only add extra weight and there is next to no off roading in Europe. We don't have the empty space here, it is either villages, farm land or natural parks where no traffic is allowed offroad.
    Now with the advent of electric vans at least in the Netherlands they are pondering to increase the 3500 kg limit because it would be nigh on impossible to have an electric van bigger than the id-buzz remain under 3500 kg. It remains to be seen.
    Happy travels!

      We did a “budget break-down” video when we were living in our van travelling Australia. We will do one for Europe when we have a few more months under our belt. When we lived in the UK, we bought a small diesel van. It was hard to rehiste because we needed a permanent address for the insurance etc and the van was a japanese import, so there was an issye with that. Looking back, it would've been better to get someone in the UK to buy it in their name. We sold it when we left for home (Australia) it was all stressful. I wouldnt do it again. Should we go back, perhaps we would buy a van in Europe like youve done.
    Our last working holiday in Ireland, we hired a car abd rented a house. Just watch car insurance policies because many will only cover a 14 day period. Read the fine print always.

    Is it very difficult with communication in Germany , or do most people speak English as a second language?

      I did a couple of years of German at University way back in the 90s, and I'm surprised how much I've remembered. In the main tourist areas English is more widely spoken, but we've been out in smaller villages and I've actually found I'm speaking much more German than I did when I travelled here in the 90s.

    Congratulations on your new van. A question if I may. With purchasing a van in Germany, what "home" address did you use for obtaining registration and insurance? I've looked into purchasing a vehicle in the UK, and they need a "home" address for doing this. All well and good if you have family/friends which will allow you to use their address. Does this obstacle exist when purchasing in Germany? Thank-you. Happy travels.

    Congrats on the new van Nigel and Sue. How does "schengen" (I think that's how it's spelt) affect you? Going from the UK into Europe you are limited as to the amount of time you can spend (90 days is it?) before having to go out of the schengen zone. How does that work as a tourist in your position?

    • @nigelandsueadventures
      @nigelandsueadventures  Месяц назад +2

      That’s correct, you can only spend 90 days out of 180 inside the Schengen zone. It’s quite complicated too! We will do a video on that in the coming months.

    Did you go diesel or petrol? A friend told me that Europe now has restrictions on where you could drive diesel vehicles but I wasn’t sure if this is a big issue? Do things like rego inspections and prices vary much between countries in the EU?

    • @nigelandsueadventures
      @nigelandsueadventures  Месяц назад +1

      The van is diesel (as are most in Europe) and yes, there are restrictions on driving in some city centres. But the reality is you can’t park in the centres anyway. Our plan is to park up outside and take PT in.

    This is amazing!!! Just found your channel and am so glad l did. I just recently returned from my first Europe and England trip and absolutely loved it. I would love to campervan around England and Europe. I even thought how would l go about buying a van overseas, so this episode has been an amazing insight.
    That's interesting about sprinters in Germany. I have a sprinter in Oz, so l was naturally looking out for them on my trip. I saw so many campervans everywhere l went and did see a few sprinters but come to think they were on the higher end. I spotted some amazing camping areas. One l remember was in Zanton Mali Dubrovnik, just near where l rented a bnb for a week. Even though l was in a beautiful bnb, l was quietly envious of the campervan parked in this amazing location.
    I can't wait for your next video.

    How about the 90 day rule?

    • @nigelandsueadventures
      @nigelandsueadventures  11 дней назад

      Yes, we are definitely counting our days! There are several countries that are outside Schengen (most of the Balkans, the UK, Turkey) where we will be able to reset our 90 days. Its a rolling 90 days, counting back 180 from "today". We will be doing a video on this in a couple of months, explaining how we are working around it.

    • @nigelandsueadventures
      @nigelandsueadventures  Месяц назад +2

      Yes with our passports we are limited to 90/180 in Schengen. Sue has a UK passport so I can stay there indefinitely, and I’ll probably spend a bit of time there while Nigel is working. As he works away 6 weeks at a time, that will make his 90/180 easier. We will do a full video on how we are navigating that in a couple of months.
