You forget an important part of the story. I worked in this industry for many years and I cannot count the completely stupid, irrelevant, crazy, moroonic demands that these rich people request. If you don t, you will be fired. Period. So if a mega rich daughter wants to go for a dip in the middle of the night, you open the door and pray that nothing happens. But still, you are fully responsible. That s why I quited the industry. I could not cope anymore with the stupidity of these rich customers that would sent me to jail sooner or later.

Don't think at 5:00 AM there will be any rich owner demanding that the stern swim platform door remain open. Would think that any Professional Mariner would have insured the keel would be down and the stern platform door was closed. Let's wait until the investigation is concluded as perhaps, we may get an answer as to why none of the owner's party survived and all of the crew did?

It’s a sheltered area from the wind and waves when the yacht is cruising or sailing. The wooden furniture and plants should not be on deck as it can cause damage to the vessel in a storm.
I agree. A catamaran is generally "not" ballasted, she utilizes wide beam to keep her upright... but if enough wind gets between her hulls and up under her center deck/cabin, she can be flipped as seen in the video.
I've been on a race boat just out of Auckland when there were a number of water spouts. We were hit by one. We went from starboard knock down to a port knock down and cracked the carbon mast. You could have 2 boats within swing distance and both could have a totally different impact.
Because the incident is still under investigation. The survivors will have been told by the police NOT to talk to the press until foul play / negligence has been ruled out, as any statements could prejudice a possible future criminal case.
Thinking that hey are probably kept to "silence" with their contracts linking them to the yacht and which are still in force, so very minimum source of information there except from the captain who has said all that the media will get. The keel wasn't/isn't a swing keel but a retractable keel and again, IF it was up (strong possibility at anchor although personally I would have kept it down for stability reasons - guests onboard etc.) the boat was far less stable and the mast itself is sufficient windage to lay the boat flat on the water in a squall with 1/2 of the keel up ... Anyway: Doors open windows open because of the heat and apparent calm. A waterspout hits them (and the vessel beside (infront) them and they heel over and fill up with water and sink. Simples. Punch window hole in a tupperware and put a weight in the bottom so 2 thirds of it is underwater with the windows/holes above the water line. Now tip it sideways so as to fill it with water and then right it again: It's taken on so much water that water gushes through the windows which were above the waterline before and the whole thing sinks like a stone in a few minutes. Not really enough to wake up, straighten your thoughts, realise the ship is on it's side and crawl in the dark to to where you think you remember the door being while al the time water is gushing in from above.

I live on a sailboat ⛵️. Been through many terrifying storms including a hurricane. Had to be rescued even. Still, I can’t even imagine the HORROR ALL of these people went through. God help us all.
This is the first report I have seen that looks into the possible causes of this terrible incident that speaks from someone who knows what they are talking about. A lot of questions around what happened. I have over 25 years experience working with superyachts including Perini Navi have seen the effect of wind on these huge rigs. Nothing quite as crazy as the footage from Auckland show in this video. Will be following closely to find out what happened. Given the high profile nature of this incident it is sure to have repercussions across the yachting industry.
As a former professional mariner and currently a based researcher, I am intrigued. The likelihood of this event, though theoretically possible, is literally multiple millions to one. That the crew were spared, excepting the chef, and the financial elite taken seems almost divinely ordained. That the yacht should be named after a school of philosophy which basically discounts this principle goes beyond irony. It's as if they truly were smote by God.
I once stepped on the gunnel of a 20’ sailboat whose keel had fallen off. It could have capsized had it not been moored to the dock. It was as tippy as a canoe.
@@JoeLinux2000 agreed, I had a very old “C” MacGregor - b4 they went in for high horsepower motors. Didn’t have a spinnaker, probably a good thing for safety reasons, and was horrible downwind, come to think of it, couldn’t point that well either, and was decidedly uncomfortable very close to the wind. But she was fun, a great challenge in some ways. And didn’t completely destroy my finances. Lol. Did one trailer trip, which is now a fond memory.
I have sailed on yachts and dingys ,One piece of advice from seasoned salt is that there is no such thing as a unsinkable boat it may seem perilously assumptive but ,expert opinion may well be correct.I was not aware that the Keel was a swing type . I am sure the Master has been asked Why was the keel raised ? My thoughts are with the relatives at this sad time
Was sitting in a parking lot on the shore and saw a system over the water but it was hard to judge the speed because it was coming straight at us and I told the driver to get out of here but they were fumbling around and by the time she started the car only a few seconds passed and it was to late so we stayed parked instead of moving in it and it went over us tossed the car all around and uprooted 2 foot trees near us we were lucky to not get hit by a tree it was a violent fast moving water spout and nearly impossible to dodge in a car. All my best to these families.
Apparently the crew were on deck securing the furniture etc as the storm was ongoing . so open doors and hatches are a realistic possibility. This explains why most of the crew survived and were in a life raft. The chef died, as he was obviously asleep and not responsible for on deck work. Both of those cockpits look terrible with hindsight. The cockpit steps acting as a canal for the water coming over the side.
if anyone was on top deck and the wind forces were enough to tip the boat over surely they would have been flung far off the boat or severely injured etc?

@@adriennef1770 I bet the crew did not like the owner. He looks like, and sounds like an unsavory fellow. It would have been risking one's life to go below after the boat went on its side. The boat going on its side would have woken and alarmed everyone below. Apparently, the boat stayed on its side. Nobody should have stayed on the boat if hurricane force winds were forecast. They should have gotten a hotel room on shore, but they were too cheap to do it.
The AIS suggests the Yacht dragged anchor and the Stern was turned to the wind and waves. That is the most dangerous position a yacht can be in a storm. The waves could smash the rear doors/windows engulfing the Stern. This lowers the Stern allowing more waves and water to flood the yacht. 3-4 waves and the yacht is doomed.
The rescue captain mentioned They were anchored on 40m. Plenty of depth to leave the keel down, and reduce roll for quests. Prayers for all the families involved.
Might have been preparing to come into port thus, made sense to have the keel up. Plus, from what I heard, the seas were calm before the storm.

I've had a think I know what happened, and you are hearing it here first!!! They dropped the keel for stability in a panic.....and it just kept going to the bottom.... the yacht capsized immediately. I bet they find the keel separate from the hull!! They saw the weather, first instinct was to stabilize, they dropped the keel, it keep going. The chocking mechanism when fully deployed failed. VERY HEAVY KEEL, Deployed too fast?
It would seem that the beach doors were open at waterline and the wind healed the boat, resulting in tens of thousands of gallons of water entering the boat. My guess at least.
Didn’t know about the sunken, swimming pooled-sized entertainment up forward. If it wasn’t water tight or if it was but not secured, your explanation for the sinking is the best I’ve heard yet. It seems the owners of these lavish vessels are more concerned with appearances than with seaworthiness. And, as illustrated yet again, the sea dies not respect egos
Pool sized area is nothing. Issue was the side sliding door almost at water level for the tender. Apparently left open. Seems they had a party that night too.
Sorry for the terrible accident. Sometimes it is good to be by far not so rich. All of those enjoyments (flying, sailing, extreme mountaineering, wingsuiting, bungeejumping, free climbing, etc) have their hidden deadly risks.
She sank by 50m of depth, we can assume it was roughly the depth at her anchorage. Enough water. Why would they have lifted her keel up? A massiv ingress of water thru portholes/hatches at the "recreational tent" at the base of the mast is an interesting hypothesis. Question: did this ship have hull doors (for tender garage for instance) or an opening stern ("beach club" style") which could have been opened?
Even with the board up there should be some ballast in the keel to help with righting the boat after the knockdown. A lot of centerboard boats have the board up when running and lower it when going to weather. So they still need ballast in the keel. Like the other commenter said ask the crew.
The problem was 100% that huge forward cockpit. All that water so high above the center of gravity on a monohull sailboat?!? This was probably one of those scenarios where the owners asked for something, and the designers should have walked away from the project, and not had anything to do with such a dangerous request. You need a flat deck that allows water to egress over it and drain off to the sides. That's what a sailboat needs.
Yacht industrie is closer to owners' requirements and walk away safety regulations..... in my experience, I had met several times with owners asking wrong things and putting aside safety regulations..... first thing ownership requirement.... take away life jackets from cabins.....
I am a 70yr old Brit sailor, everything, from beginner sails to 50ft yachts, I have sailed Lakes, Rivers and Seas, I think assumption of facts, will do nobody who goes down to the Sea any favours, I have had nightmares, about this event, I am a Parent/Grandparent/Great-Grandparent, But I have in 1988, sailed within hundreds of meters, of a Waterspout, Naive then as I was, and lived to realise, I had pushed my luck, which does run out on a regular basis

They endured a storm/small tornado for exactly 16 minutes. Most likely, the ship (boats longer than 24 meters are called ships) turned around itself approximately 180° and the ship's propeller got tangled in the anchor chain. Therefore, structural damage occurred in the aft area where the garage and engine room are located, causing a large leak, the ship started taking in water at this point. Perhaps the bulb keel also broke and a 56-meter ship sank in 60 seconds. Nothing happened to the Dutch flagged ship that was about 200 meters next to it. Strong ships of this type can only be sunk by submarine torpedoes.
That boat has huge volumes.. So even at 80-90° over, meaning 45% or less under water, the influx of water to sink it in a blink must have been massive? meaning all windows and all doors must have been open ?
@@robertjones3568 and a broken mast could puncture the hull below the water line, or wind could list the boat and force it below the water line. I bet a lot of these things all happened.
righting moments, super yachts do not capsize, been sailing since age 13 built ocean sailing most of my life whatever her sinking was caused by design often sailing yachts encounter 90 plus knots sustained winds, some are knocked down but right emselves true tragedy indeed
I think this scenario will prove to be the correct one. In addition, if/when the mast hit the water in the knockdown, it would have flooded the in-mast sail furling cavity and created a load that could have countered/prevented any initial righting moment allowed for in the design A terrible and unfortunate event.
Yes if the keel was retracted the cg would move upwards and at anchor might reduce the action of the prevailing wind and waves creating a more comfortable night sleep for the owner and guests… when the winds intensified so rapidly the likely break of the mast could have been midpoint folding over and as the boat laid over to the rails water ingress began, the mast weight concentrated closer to the cg which drove the shorted mast straight down instead of the full length of the normal mast being spread out over more water and riding on top which typically happens in a knock down… just an opinion and definitely speculation. Coincidentally there are media reports confirming the death of an associate in England the same day, by a hit and run driver…

There’s no way this boat was tested for a knockdown with keel up and loaded. Water tight doors or not, she was going to be in desperate trouble with the open sunken cockpit design after a knockdown. There’s also no way a knockdown was ever a consideration of the crew in those expected conditions. Sailors may expect to get hit by lightning and prepare for that, but I’ve never heard of anyone preparing to be hit by a tornado. It’s not like you can hide in the cellar. The Westhaven video was a real eye opener. I’ve not heard any consistent information about how fast she foundered, whether she turtled or anything. It’s entirely possible, if she turtled, that she remained on the surface for several minutes, but the passengers unable to escape their cabins
Yacht had HP computers and these computers put al the hatches open and lifted the keel up. I do not want to pres......something😮😮😮 But anyway it is strange that only this yacht of this size came in problem and sunk, mistery.
The first thing I thought when I heard about it was, "They taking folks out with weather weapons". When his co defendant died by car jogging I thought it might be on. Obviously I don't know anything, but I've never heard of anything like this. A whole water tornado took out a Super Yacht anchored is crazy. I FEEL 😂 like it's foul play or God himself.
Based on the Bayesian incident, if I am an insurance adjuster of luxury yachts, I would revisit every insurance policy and make sure there are specific requirements for better crew training, better access to automated pump systems to remove incoming water, and automated rescue vessels that can deploy much faster than in the Bayesian. The industry needs to improve the risk mitigation practices to return confidence to future customers.

I wouldn't be surprised if hatches and the watertight doors to the deck were open. I often have my main companion way door open anchor if it's hot out.

Ok some very intelligent comments here. This is a tradgedy . I wonder though when does any boat anchor in 50 m of water? Maybe a supertanker does I dont know the answer to that. But based on a normal anchoring situation you would release 4 times the depth of wate in anchor chain. So given that the depth was 50 m the ship would have needed to lay 200 m of chain. That is one hell of a lot of chain. As the vessel drew 9m with its keel down and 4m with it retracted it is not beyond the realm of possibility that she could anchor in 5 m of water, therefore using only 20m of chain.

There are many composite built catamarans that are positively buoyant! And coupled with the design, collision bulkheads and placement of watertight compartments. They can sustain the weight of the engines, spars and other equipment, During “CATastrophic”events.
Just another theory from a yachtie!: Could the yacht have turned onto its anchor chain during the downburst so that the keel is pushing against the chain and causing the yacht to be less stable and more likely to go flat in the water? Just a theory !
@@JoeLinux2000 Hi Joe, I've had a situation, where at anchor there was a squall and I found myself with the keel against the anchor chain, the boat had turned and I was stuck until the wind went down, but of course the wind generally drives the boat away from the anchor .

Agreed need a photo of the wreckage. With the keel down and all hatches closed due to the storm notice this could have been prevented. Where is the photo of the keel. Key evidence. They were in deep enough water to have the keel down. My opinion bis the keel was up . A huge mistake.
Im suspicious of the refit done a couple of years back- did that include a new mast? If so, was it larger than the original? Was there any sign of a headsail unfurling accidentally, as that would be disastrous.

I think it is quite clear to me that certain people on this boat were the target. These boats are pretty much unsinkable. Witnesses say it looked like the mast was hit by lightning, this could very well have been a DEW. We have just seen an aeroplane brought down in Brazil because of who was on board and it was not the first time. We live in strange times.
I just read that an average of just over 3,000 people are lost at sea in any year with over 200 vessels going down. We only really hear about the wealthy lives lost.
Apparently there were no crew on watch like on the other vessel near them. If so it’s a fatal dereliction of duty. Good luck getting another job Captain.

boat layout is fundamentally flawed. Yaughts are normally provided with a solid canopy ABOVE deck level with a lockable waterproof doot to the inside space!! this means it is always waterproof and will be safe in bad weather , able to take waves over the bow and survive.
I don't think getting knocked down at anchor was high on the design criteria. Fat boats don't recover quickly and this probably allowed the water in. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong boat.
The boats in that marina in Auckland were tied to the dock. That probably gave a fixed pivot point for the boat to heel over. That's not the case when a boat is at anchor. My guess is that the keel snapped off.
@@allangibson8494 Anchor lines are usually attached to the bow. While at anchor strong winds just cause the stern to swing around and then the bow is facing the wind.
In the 80's my dad was a ships Captain. They were suddenly caught in a storm which changed from basic to ragine overnight in the North Sea of England. His 600+ foot ships bow was 65 feet over the waterline and when they went into troths, the waves were above the ship and the bow would submerge. The ship was making awful noises like the bow was going to snap off and the officers were petrified. There was some jobs that were in places you had to walk above deck. He ordered some people to stay there for 36 hours no food or water or bathroom. He said he had to to his best "acting" as a Captain to avoid a general panic. He said in one troth they could see almost a mile left and right of cresting waves that if she broke apart they'd never be found. He had a ship's photographer who documented the storm
Terrible tragedy and sympathy to all those who lost relatives in this really awful event in shipping history. A thought about the sunken lounge set around the mast,indicated in your assessment. I think that it would have flooded very quickly. Especially If there were any windows open, the yatch would have listed to one side, due to the whirlwind. That must have been uncontrollable for the captain. Its fate was out of his hands at that point. The nose would have gone straight down. Sinking immediately. All theoretical at this point of course. Until the investigation we can only surmise.
Water spouts carry tonnes of water aloft and when comes in contact with a large object, all that mass falls ... that would have filled those "pool like" recessed sections fore and aft... displacement hulls loose stability in direct relation to the loss of displacement when filled with water .... and then the mast will cause it to roll over... even a substantial remaining section of a broken mast is like a lever in the wind at that point .... I've sunk a lot of dinghies, broken masts and been knocked down many times in keel-boats ... combine that with a huge amount of falling water and you have a Black Swan moment. No displacement no stability the keel drags you to the bottom.
@@chandrasekharanalnadarajah7285 There'd been plenty of yellow weather warnings from Palermo and the crew were "active" (all but the cook jumped into the drink). Also the yacht anchored ahead of them did take the action (engines on, pivot into expected direction). (To be sure, waterspout `direction of arrival` is somewhat moot.).
In a interview with another boat captain he said the weather report earlier in the day stated very bad weather was approaching. He said he has no idea why the yacht didnt go to the harbor. Maybe the boat captain didnt think the weather would be as bad as it was and the yacht could withstand the storm. How horrifying for those people in their cabins.

Its really not that surprising what happened with that wind strength. Mathematically the force from wind resistance increases exponentially by a factor of 4 so its no surprise that the surface area from the second tallest mast in the world on a sail boat would be able to turn the boat on its side. The water would have entered and filled up quickly from the design where the doors were left open.

I don't know if the sails secure in the boom but high winds finding a way to unfurl even pulling the sail out of the boom there is big problem there. A picture before nightfall would help. Having enjoyed righting a catamaran with its mast banging the bottom, that sailing ship had a mast that would hit bottom maybe adding instability.
The Keel was in a raised keel position, not a swing keel, which swings side to side. So she just tipped over in the wind; the mast had so many radomes on the mast (4) When you see the boat in the harbor, she looks like she is moving a lot for a 400-tonne ship.
@@JoeLinux2000 Comrade, a Swing Keel swings port to starboard! A Drop Keel is raised and lowered, and a Centerboard Keel pivots around a pin along the centerline. Please look at an Open 60, WildOats X. A Swing Keel maximizes the righting moment to windward, and a centerboard keel reduces draft. One should look at Rambler 100, which had a swing keel! One cannot make a sailboat out of a motorboat; the hull form is very unstable. The Baden-Powell, a classic 1959 Baltimore Clipper, withstood the storm without any problem. The Skipper and Owner were alert and rescued the survivors. The Baden-Powell never had a drop, a centerboard, or a swing keel. The Beyesian skipper jumped into the lift craft without trying to rescue his passengers!

@@CH-yp5by You're not wrong, but in the full-up position the keel is secured to prevent banging, which is what they do at anchor so it doesn't sound like you're living in an apartment next to someone with a gigantic subwoofer.
It does strike me that whilst this disaster is unusual there are a few things that are relatively common on modern yachts and have been a lesson waiting to be learned (I'm not sure this will be enough to do it). A reliance on form stability (at least to a significant degree wiht her keel up at anchor - apparently the water was 50m deep so there was depth to lower it to 10m but it reportedly "knocks" at anchor and so keeps guests awake when lowered. Many modern yachts have form stability at least to a degree with a point of vanishing stability where that begins to act against you. Open entertaining areas allowing ingress of water into the interior of the yacht without adequate protection A lack of watertight (at least to a degree) subdivision to ensure enough reserve bouyancy when partially flooded.
She went down in two minutes. The lady with her baby sleeping on deck outside said she was in the water immediately without running or jumping. The masts scenario is likely cover up of some serious issues. Definitely challenging times for industry.

funny how the main deck looks like an average coffeeshop seating area, yet is sunken into the structure creating a pool effect. and designers calling it unsinkable!?
It’s a sheltered area from the wind and waves when the yacht is cruising or sailing. The wooden furniture and plants should not be on deck as it can cause damage to the vessel in a storm.

I agree. A catamaran is generally "not" ballasted, she utilizes wide beam to keep her upright... but if enough wind gets between her hulls and up under her center deck/cabin, she can be flipped as seen in the video.
I've been on a race boat just out of Auckland when there were a number of water spouts. We were hit by one. We went from starboard knock down to a port knock down and cracked the carbon mast. You could have 2 boats within swing distance and both could have a totally different impact.

Because the incident is still under investigation. The survivors will have been told by the police NOT to talk to the press until foul play / negligence has been ruled out, as any statements could prejudice a possible future criminal case.
Thinking that hey are probably kept to "silence" with their contracts linking them to the yacht and which are still in force, so very minimum source of information there except from the captain who has said all that the media will get.
The keel wasn't/isn't a swing keel but a retractable keel and again, IF it was up (strong possibility at anchor although personally I would have kept it down for stability reasons - guests onboard etc.) the boat was far less stable and the mast itself is sufficient windage to lay the boat flat on the water in a squall with 1/2 of the keel up ...
Anyway: Doors open windows open because of the heat and apparent calm.
A waterspout hits them (and the vessel beside (infront) them and they heel over and fill up with water and sink. Simples.
Punch window hole in a tupperware and put a weight in the bottom so 2 thirds of it is underwater with the windows/holes above the water line.
Now tip it sideways so as to fill it with water and then right it again: It's taken on so much water that water gushes through the windows which were above the waterline before and the whole thing sinks like a stone in a few minutes.
Not really enough to wake up, straighten your thoughts, realise the ship is on it's side and crawl in the dark to to where you think you remember the door being while al the time water is gushing in from above.
What a sad.
Ending. To a beautiful elegant and graceful lady. Who now rest in her watery grave. Rest in peace. To the ones who couldn't make it out.
Humans must never take the Oceans or mother nature lightly or for granted how many times must we learn this lesson.

I live on a sailboat ⛵️. Been through many terrifying storms including a hurricane. Had to be rescued even. Still, I can’t even imagine the HORROR ALL of these people went through. God help us all.

I have over 25 years experience working with superyachts including Perini Navi have seen the effect of wind on these huge rigs.
Nothing quite as crazy as the footage from Auckland show in this video.

Given the high profile nature of this incident it is sure to have repercussions across the yachting industry.
The could always put on short stubby masts and turn it into a motor sailor. Nevertheless, the even still may have resulted in the same outcome.
As a former professional mariner and currently a based researcher, I am intrigued. The likelihood of this event, though theoretically possible, is literally multiple millions to one. That the crew were spared, excepting the chef, and the financial elite taken seems almost divinely ordained. That the yacht should be named after a school of philosophy which basically discounts this principle goes beyond irony. It's as if they truly were smote by God.

Having a heavy mast taller than the ship was long was an invitation to disaster. Of COURSE the boat builders are going to claim otherwise.
ALL single masted vessels have masts "taller" than they are long. Many to a far further degree.
I once stepped on the gunnel of a 20’ sailboat whose keel had fallen off. It could have capsized had it not been moored to the dock. It was as tippy as a canoe.

Didn’t have a spinnaker, probably a good thing for safety reasons, and was horrible downwind, come to think of it, couldn’t point that well either, and was decidedly uncomfortable very close to the wind. But she was fun, a great challenge in some ways. And didn’t completely destroy my finances. Lol. Did one trailer trip, which is now a fond memory.
I have sailed on yachts and dingys ,One piece of advice from seasoned salt is that there is no such thing as a unsinkable boat it may seem perilously assumptive but ,expert opinion may well be correct.I was not aware that the Keel was a swing type . I am sure the Master has been asked Why was the keel raised ? My thoughts are with the relatives at this sad time
Was sitting in a parking lot on the shore and saw a system over the water but it was hard to judge the speed because it was coming straight at us and I told the driver to get out of here but they were fumbling around and by the time she started the car only a few seconds passed and it was to late so we stayed parked instead of moving in it and it went over us tossed the car all around and uprooted 2 foot trees near us we were lucky to not get hit by a tree it was a violent fast moving water spout and nearly impossible to dodge in a car. All my best to these families.
Apparently the crew were on deck securing the furniture etc as the storm was ongoing . so open doors and hatches are a realistic possibility. This explains why most of the crew survived and were in a life raft. The chef died, as he was obviously asleep and not responsible for on deck work.
Both of those cockpits look terrible with hindsight. The cockpit steps acting as a canal for the water coming over the side.
if anyone was on top deck and the wind forces were enough to tip the boat over surely they would have been flung far off the boat or severely injured etc?
The liferaft had a hydrostatic release - it automatically inflates and releases when the boat sinks.

The boat going on its side would have woken and alarmed everyone below. Apparently, the boat stayed on its side. Nobody should have stayed on the boat if hurricane force winds were forecast. They should have gotten a hotel room on shore, but they were too cheap to do it.

The AIS suggests the Yacht dragged anchor and the Stern was turned to the wind and waves.
That is the most dangerous position a yacht can be in a storm. The waves could smash the rear doors/windows engulfing the Stern.
This lowers the Stern allowing more waves and water to flood the yacht. 3-4 waves and the yacht is doomed.

Luxury yachts aren't designed for a full roll over and recovery like yachts for circumnavigation. That's the exact reason why.

Might have been preparing to come into port thus, made sense to have the keel up. Plus, from what I heard, the seas were calm before the storm.

They dropped the keel for stability in a panic.....and it just kept going to the bottom.... the yacht capsized immediately.

It would seem that the beach doors were open at waterline and the wind healed the boat, resulting in tens of thousands of gallons of water entering the boat. My guess at least.
Didn’t know about the sunken, swimming pooled-sized entertainment up forward. If it wasn’t water tight or if it was but not secured, your explanation for the sinking is the best I’ve heard yet.
It seems the owners of these lavish vessels are more concerned with appearances than with seaworthiness. And, as illustrated yet again, the sea dies not respect egos

Pool sized area is nothing. Issue was the side sliding door almost at water level for the tender. Apparently left open. Seems they had a party that night too.
Sorry for the terrible accident. Sometimes it is good to be by far not so rich. All of those enjoyments (flying, sailing, extreme mountaineering, wingsuiting, bungeejumping, free climbing, etc) have their hidden deadly risks.
She sank by 50m of depth, we can assume it was roughly the depth at her anchorage. Enough water. Why would they have lifted her keel up? A massiv ingress of water thru portholes/hatches at the "recreational tent" at the base of the mast is an interesting hypothesis. Question: did this ship have hull doors (for tender garage for instance) or an opening stern ("beach club" style") which could have been opened?

Even with the board up there should be some ballast in the keel to help with righting the boat after the knockdown. A lot of centerboard boats have the board up when running and lower it when going to weather. So they still need ballast in the keel. Like the other commenter said ask the crew.
Actually deep keels provide directional stability under sail. They prevent leeway.

The problem was 100% that huge forward cockpit. All that water so high above the center of gravity on a monohull sailboat?!? This was probably one of those scenarios where the owners asked for something, and the designers should have walked away from the project, and not had anything to do with such a dangerous request. You need a flat deck that allows water to egress over it and drain off to the sides. That's what a sailboat needs.
Yacht industrie is closer to owners' requirements and walk away safety regulations..... in my experience, I had met several times with owners asking wrong things and putting aside safety regulations..... first thing ownership requirement.... take away life jackets from cabins.....

I am a 70yr old Brit sailor, everything, from beginner sails to 50ft yachts, I have sailed Lakes, Rivers and Seas, I think assumption of facts, will do nobody who goes down to the Sea any favours, I have had nightmares, about this event, I am a Parent/Grandparent/Great-Grandparent, But I have in 1988, sailed within hundreds of meters, of a Waterspout, Naive then as I was, and lived to realise, I had pushed my luck, which does run out on a regular basis
In such cases, in order to counteract the strong effect of the wind and not drift, the engines are started and the bow is turned against the wind. They endured a storm/small tornado for exactly 16 minutes. Most likely, the ship (boats longer than 24 meters are called ships) turned around itself approximately 180° and the ship's propeller got tangled in the anchor chain. Therefore, structural damage occurred in the aft area where the garage and engine room are located, causing a large leak, the ship started taking in water at this point. Perhaps the bulb keel also broke and a 56-meter ship sank in 60 seconds. Nothing happened to the Dutch flagged ship that was about 200 meters next to it. Strong ships of this type can only be sunk by submarine torpedoes.

That boat has huge volumes.. So even at 80-90° over, meaning 45% or less under water, the influx of water to sink it in a blink must have been massive? meaning all windows and all doors must have been open ?

I think this scenario will prove to be the correct one. In addition, if/when the mast hit the water in the knockdown, it would have flooded the in-mast sail furling cavity and created a load that could have countered/prevented any initial righting moment allowed for in the design

Yes if the keel was retracted the cg would move upwards and at anchor might reduce the action of the prevailing wind and waves creating a more comfortable night sleep for the owner and guests… when the winds intensified so rapidly the likely break of the mast could have been midpoint folding over and as the boat laid over to the rails water ingress began, the mast weight concentrated closer to the cg which drove the shorted mast straight down instead of the full length of the normal mast being spread out over more water and riding on top which typically happens in a knock down… just an opinion and definitely speculation. Coincidentally there are media reports confirming the death of an associate in England the same day, by a hit and run driver…

I’d be quite surprised if any malpractice can be put on the crew. There’s no way this boat was tested for a knockdown with keel up and loaded. Water tight doors or not, she was going to be in desperate trouble with the open sunken cockpit design after a knockdown. There’s also no way a knockdown was ever a consideration of the crew in those expected conditions. Sailors may expect to get hit by lightning and prepare for that, but I’ve never heard of anyone preparing to be hit by a tornado. It’s not like you can hide in the cellar. The Westhaven video was a real eye opener.
I’ve not heard any consistent information about how fast she foundered, whether she turtled or anything. It’s entirely possible, if she turtled, that she remained on the surface for several minutes, but the passengers unable to escape their cabins

I've seen a large yacht with twin stubby keels. Good for dry-docking as it could sit upright on the ground on the two keels.

An energy beam weapon is more likely the cause than poor yacht design.
Based on the Bayesian incident, if I am an insurance adjuster of luxury yachts, I would revisit every insurance policy and make sure there are specific requirements for better crew training, better access to automated pump systems to remove incoming water, and automated rescue vessels that can deploy much faster than in the Bayesian. The industry needs to improve the risk mitigation practices to return confidence to future customers.

The much smaller sailing yacht Sir Robert managed to survive with zero issues and immediately saved the crew in their life raft in a simple zodiac.
They didn't have an adjustable keel.

Ok some very intelligent comments here. This is a tradgedy . I wonder though when does any boat anchor in 50 m of water? Maybe a supertanker does I dont know the answer to that. But based on a normal anchoring situation you would release 4 times the depth of wate in anchor chain. So given that the depth was 50 m the ship would have needed to lay 200 m of chain. That is one hell of a lot of chain. As the vessel drew 9m with its keel down and 4m with it retracted it is not beyond the realm of possibility that she could anchor in 5 m of water, therefore using only 20m of chain.
Think you'll find that the keel was a retractable keel, not a swing keel. But it was obviously up for the yacht to heel ver that far.

There are many composite built catamarans that are positively buoyant! And coupled with the design, collision bulkheads and placement of watertight compartments. They can sustain the weight of the engines, spars and other equipment, During “CATastrophic”events.
A combination of events - human error most likely.
Any boat can sink for a large variety of reasons. It doesn't matter how expensive. This was extremely severe weather according to the reports.

Just another theory from a yachtie!: Could the yacht have turned onto its anchor chain during the downburst so that the keel is pushing against the chain and causing the yacht to be less stable and more likely to go flat in the water? Just a theory !
It's possible, but the wind generally drives the boat away from the anchor line.

Agreed need a photo of the wreckage. With the keel down and all hatches closed due to the storm notice this could have been prevented. Where is the photo of the keel. Key evidence. They were in deep enough water to have the keel down. My opinion bis the keel was up . A huge mistake.

Im suspicious of the refit done a couple of years back- did that include a new mast? If so, was it larger than the original? Was there any sign of a headsail unfurling accidentally, as that would be disastrous.
Even on small yachts you want any cockpit area to drain overboard fast. Those 2 'wells' look pretty awful from that point of view.

I think it is quite clear to me that certain people on this boat were the target. These boats are pretty much unsinkable. Witnesses say it looked like the mast was hit by lightning, this could very well have been a DEW. We have just seen an aeroplane brought down in Brazil because of who was on board and it was not the first time. We live in strange times.

I just read that an average of just over 3,000 people are lost at sea in any year with over 200 vessels going down. We only really hear about the wealthy lives lost.

boat layout is fundamentally flawed. Yaughts are normally provided with a solid canopy ABOVE deck level with a lockable waterproof doot to the inside space!! this means it is always waterproof and will be safe in bad weather , able to take waves over the bow and survive.
I don't think getting knocked down at anchor was high on the design criteria. Fat boats don't recover quickly and this probably allowed the water in. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong boat.
The boats in that marina in Auckland were tied to the dock. That probably gave a fixed pivot point for the boat to heel over.
That's not the case when a boat is at anchor.
My guess is that the keel snapped off.

@@allangibson8494 Anchor lines are usually attached to the bow. While at anchor strong winds just cause the stern to swing around and then the bow is facing the wind.

In the 80's my dad was a ships Captain. They were suddenly caught in a storm which changed from basic to ragine overnight in the North Sea of England. His 600+ foot ships bow was 65 feet over the waterline and when they went into troths, the waves were above the ship and the bow would submerge. The ship was making awful noises like the bow was going to snap off and the officers were petrified. There was some jobs that were in places you had to walk above deck. He ordered some people to stay there for 36 hours no food or water or bathroom. He said he had to to his best "acting" as a Captain to avoid a general panic. He said in one troth they could see almost a mile left and right of cresting waves that if she broke apart they'd never be found. He had a ship's photographer who documented the storm

Agreed. Such a design would ensure rapid sinking in capsize if normal watertight compartment doors were unsecured.

I think that it would have flooded very quickly. Especially If there were any windows open, the yatch would have listed to one side, due to the whirlwind. That must have been uncontrollable for the captain. Its fate was out of his hands at that point. The nose would have gone straight down.
Sinking immediately. All theoretical at this point of course. Until the investigation we can only surmise.
Water spouts carry tonnes of water aloft and when comes in contact with a large object, all that mass falls ... that would have filled those "pool like" recessed sections fore and aft... displacement hulls loose stability in direct relation to the loss of displacement when filled with water .... and then the mast will cause it to roll over... even a substantial remaining section of a broken mast is like a lever in the wind at that point .... I've sunk a lot of dinghies, broken masts and been knocked down many times in keel-boats ... combine that with a huge amount of falling water and you have a Black Swan moment. No displacement no stability the keel drags you to the bottom.

@@chandrasekharanalnadarajah7285 There'd been plenty of yellow weather warnings from Palermo and the crew were "active" (all but the cook jumped into the drink). Also the yacht anchored ahead of them did take the action (engines on, pivot into expected direction). (To be sure, waterspout `direction of arrival` is somewhat moot.).

Waterspouts can side swipe you. Even squalls can so its quite common to get laid flat in bullets of weather.
In a interview with another boat captain he said the weather report earlier in the day stated very bad weather was approaching. He said he has no idea why the yacht didnt go to the harbor. Maybe the boat captain didnt think the weather would be as bad as it was and the yacht could withstand the storm. How horrifying for those people in their cabins.

@@alanbradley9621 There is play between the keel and the hull, and every time the boat rocks it sends sharp vibrations through the hull. This totally destroys the vibe at anchor. In fact, the only time they ever lower the keel is when close hauled.

Its really not that surprising what happened with that wind strength. Mathematically the force from wind resistance increases exponentially by a factor of 4 so its no surprise that the surface area from the second tallest mast in the world on a sail boat would be able to turn the boat on its side. The water would have entered and filled up quickly from the design where the doors were left open.
You could not fill the whole boat with entering water within five minutes!

Sadly it looks like a criminal investigation is beginning - no matter what happens they will have to blame someone - just hope there was no negligence & it was unexplained weather phenomena
I don't know if the sails secure in the boom but high winds finding a way to unfurl even pulling the sail out of the boom there is big problem there. A picture before nightfall would help. Having enjoyed righting a catamaran with its mast banging the bottom, that sailing ship had a mast that would hit bottom maybe adding instability.

The Keel was in a raised keel position, not a swing keel, which swings side to side.
So she just tipped over in the wind; the mast had so many radomes on the mast (4)
When you see the boat in the harbor, she looks like she is moving a lot for a 400-tonne ship.
It's a boat, albeit large, not a ship. Secondly swing keels drop down directly under the centerline, not side to side.

Please look at an Open 60, WildOats X. A Swing Keel maximizes the righting moment to windward, and a centerboard keel reduces draft.

One cannot make a sailboat out of a motorboat; the hull form is very unstable.
The Baden-Powell, a classic 1959 Baltimore Clipper, withstood the storm without any problem. The Skipper and Owner were alert and rescued the survivors. The Baden-Powell never had a drop, a centerboard, or a swing keel.
The Beyesian skipper jumped into the lift craft without trying to rescue his passengers!

@@CH-yp5by You're not wrong, but in the full-up position the keel is secured to prevent banging, which is what they do at anchor so it doesn't sound like you're living in an apartment next to someone with a gigantic subwoofer.

It does strike me that whilst this disaster is unusual there are a few things that are relatively common on modern yachts and have been a lesson waiting to be learned (I'm not sure this will be enough to do it).
A reliance on form stability (at least to a significant degree wiht her keel up at anchor - apparently the water was 50m deep so there was depth to lower it to 10m but it reportedly "knocks" at anchor and so keeps guests awake when lowered. Many modern yachts have form stability at least to a degree with a point of vanishing stability where that begins to act against you.
Open entertaining areas allowing ingress of water into the interior of the yacht without adequate protection
A lack of watertight (at least to a degree) subdivision to ensure enough reserve bouyancy when partially flooded.
She went down in two minutes. The lady with her baby sleeping on deck outside said she was in the water immediately without running or jumping.
The masts scenario is likely cover up of some serious issues.
