Not a native English speaker, but totally agree and feel the same changes in my Japanese/English speaking style after switching from a Japanese company to a Japanese language school. Try to use simple words and concise structures to reduce misunderstandings for my foreign students and colleagues with different language levels and cultures.

And then it creeps into the language of your personal life.....lol

I also have a bad habit of repeating what I just said to make sure that everyone understands. Comes from teaching English to Japanese people for 33 years. I hate catching myself doing that when I’m around other gaijin.

Interesting, that isn't something I have found myself doing, but is another good example of changing one's language due to life abroad. Thank you for sharing.

Really enjoyed this topic and can relate to this one as an Australian in Singapore.
I’ve definitely had to flatten out my pronunciation of English despite English being used here commonly, albeit in the predominant form Singlish.

Been to Singapore twice, and the English there is a lot of fun in my opinion!

You're absolutely right! Living in Japan for 6 years, I'm already starting to lose my "R" and the "L". What's going to happen with my enunciations? My lips and jaws don't move like they used to, just like the Japanese when they speak. It's furaido poteto and harooh for me today.

It's strange, right? There seems to be no reason whatsoever for an first language English speaker to mix those, but those sounds slip out wrong from time to time. Wonder if there is any research on this....

Do you work for a Japanese company in Japan or a western company, also what are your thoughts on where foreigners should work in Japan would be interested to hear that perspective since my family would like to immigrate there from America at some point

Hi, Paul. Are there more books you recommend on Japanese culture, I remember you talking about nature in Japan. Thanks!

I made a video a LONG time ago with book recommendations - this is probably a good thing to update with a new video! Thanks for the question.

I am a teacher that will be moving to Japan next March for a ALT postion with Interac. Your videos have provided a wealth of great information. I do have a question. I was wondering how difficult it is to get hired by a University in Japan/if I would have a difficult time getting hired by a University there? I have a Master's degree in English and have taught at a university for 8 years in the States (not in the last 2 years), have presented at several conferences, although I have not published my work yet , and am vigorously studying the language. Please keep up the good work with the videos, I really enjoy your channel.

With a Masters in English and university experience you could absolutely compete for some university jobs. One good place to start looking is the website Jrec-in. You can search by area and job type. Good luck!

We have spent almost a year in Japan over all of our trips and I am also studying Japanese, but have not lived in Japan (I would love to!). However I find myself using "Hai" often instead of yes at home in Australia.🤣

That's pretty funny, and reminds that I also sometimes can't remember the English word for certain things, only coming up with the Japanese word! A bit embarrassing....

I now routinely tell other foreigners that I'm 'going on holiday'. No American ever says that.
Also, I've emerged from watching this with an intense craving for a bagel. That's never happened to me before.

    • @ExJapTer
      @ExJapTer  19 дней назад +1

There is one super market that sells real bagels near us. Also, the best bagel shop in Japan (that I am aware of) is in Shinagawa area of Tokyo, so if you come back I'll take you there.
