As a child of a hoarder, I have spent my whole life feeling unloved, that my mother cared more about holding on to her things, most of which had degraded to the point of being garbage, than she cared about giving a normal life to her children and even grandchildren. A huge high-five to you for facing your hoarding head-on and improving the lives of your family. Your boys must feel so loved to have their mom do so much hard work for them. The actual cleaning and organizing is not the real work, it is dealing with all of the emotions that come with decluttering. Keep going strong, you are doing great!
I remember when I was 24, my mother finally let me sort through my 47 boxes of childhood clutter at her house. She wouldn't let me declutter any sooner. I flew 1 box of paper and 2 suitcases of toys home. I carried those boxes and bags for another 3 years. Now I have a shoebox of momentos and 2 small journals of scrapbook art, poetry, travel journals compiled, etc. God forbid, if anything happened to me, my son isn't burdened by inheriting 2000 sentimental items. Also, as he grows, he gets to enjoy a small piece from my childhood, without it taking over the house. He doesn't see 15 years of teenage angst poety, because I read through 12 journals and picked out the best memories to keep. It took weeks to get through it, but once it's done, it's DONE. When I see your designated area for sentimental, I remember the task of 47 boxes, and how it went from a burden to a manageable blessing. I've watched your journey for many years, and it's so nice to see you coming up close to the finish line. Your momentum has really grown this year, and I'm so impressed. You're doing so well, especially to show your boys how to make an impossible task, possible. Great job mama!
Please invest in a dehumidifier for the basement even though it no longer floods. Basements tend to get moist and the air quality is so much better with them. They don't cost much. It will help eliminate any residual moisture and keep it dry during humid times.
You really need to use Clorox brand bleach. Then put fans on it and leave for several days to dry. That cement will hold moisture that you can’t see or feel. Then do your painting with the protection in it. And yes! Absolutely use that rug! Great job!
She has shared she is not able to use bleach and asked for alternate suggestions a while back. Some can use and others can't. Hope that helps and maybe if u have alternatives then maybe you can share your own if u have any
This may or not be good advice so read with caution: In regards to all the boys toys: maybe it would be a good idea to place all their toys which are currently in the basement, into their bedrooms so you and they can see how much they really have. If their toys are in several places it minimizes how much they own. Once you have the basement decluttered, move it all to their rooms and have them make decisions. 🤷🏻♀️❤️ Be well
It is.. an open corner, woho! Thats like a milestone when decluttering a room! Before you start to remove the mold, invest in a respirator mask to not inhale the spores (and the fumes from the products you use). I once helped to restore molded pianos for a museum and we all wore head to toe protection and complete helmets with masks, like the CDC. Thats probably overkill for at home use, but at least a respirator, gloves and eye protection are useful. I'd use something from the hardware store that is explicit for mold removal on walls. And check if the walls are dry enough to repaint to prevent new mould from getting through the paint. An air quality test is also a good idea before installing a play area, since spores can give you allergies and asthma. Now I realize, that this all sound a bit scary, but if you are comfortable enough to let other people in your basement, there are professionals who can recommend you what to do is best.
You've done an amazing job cleaning and decluttering the basement. Cleaning the rug to use in the basement is perfect. Large rugs like that size don't come cheap. I totally agree with having the safety equipment before cleaning the walls. I would also check online and/or with a professional to find out what is the best thing to use for cleaning the walls. There may be a product that is just for cleaning mold off of surfaces. Is any other part of the basement have a problem with being damp and moldy? You may want to tackle that section also. Moving everything to the center of the basement, cleaning & painting the walls, then putting on the dry seal would be best but not realistic. One section at a time!
I was taught that bleach is the only true mold killer. Drylock is the best paint/treatment for the walls. After cleaning have oscillating fans blowing on the walls for a few days to really dry the block walls. Then paint them. Drylock needs a couple of days to completely cure. I love the idea of reusing the rug after cleaning it too of course. Well done sweetheart.
After dealing with a mold mediation in my home, we found that BLEACH actually does not kill mold. It just bleaches the color and stain out. For best results, use tea tree oil. It actually will kill all the mold spores. Add some to water with a small amount of vodka (emulsifies the oil so the oil and water can mix) spray walls liberally, let dry and spray again if needed. I found that all was gone with 2 applications. Then we painted with zinsser mold killing primer. Our basement is perfect now
Bar Keepers friend is an amazing mild abrasive cleaner u can get powder or a thicker liquid version. I have them both and I had stains on my counter top that bleach wouldnt even take off and Bar keepers friend did! I highly recommend it..you can use it on many different surfaces!
Omg that space is huge. I couldn’t believe you found so much to declutter too. I absolutely love when you find an empty bin. Hubby is great too to get the insulation put up and stuff moved, it’s a family effort. Well done to you all. Stay safe and healthy. Mary, Joes wife 👏👍💪💐🦄🙏
Great job well done! I showed my husband your end results and asked his opinion. He worked in a facility for 40 plus years and had some experience working with hazardous substances and seeing your concrete floor and block wall he suggests deluted Clorox deluted with water (as much as can be tolerated, eg. 50/50 ratio with protection measures) and do NOT mix with anything else! As was mentioned by others, you can't see or feel the spores. Hope this helps! Love you and be safe; hubby too! Whoohoo, you did it!! 😁 👍😘❤👌👏👏👏
Made me emotional watch that empty area.. good going girl ❤️👍 And round of applause to all other people who comment . Good people are always with good people.
All I can say is WOW. U have been doing an excellent job. Keep up the great work. I bet Tyler is so proud of his momma. Ur making his request come true before the time he said.
You never disappoint!! Well done!! Cleaning that wall and painting wont be easy but it will make a WORLD of difference. Hoarders never noticed or dont have the time and funds to fix leaks and clean up after. You got new gutters and are working to fix areas that need some tender love and care. You saved your home from mold and stopped yourself from getting into the dangerous hoarder territory where you and up damaging your home beyond repair. You also managed to save money for that water heater to be immediately replaced. I think you started this project a few years ago and you did it just in time. YOu should be SO proud. Very few hoarders manage to do what you’ve done without some serious professional help. You are so inspiring and truly understand the meaning of “perservere.”
Thought you'd be taking another year before your basement got this far. So proud of you and the progress you have made in healing! Curious about how your husband reacts whenever you've cleared out another section of the basement and the house.
This is what I was hoping for for you! I was thinking first this corner, then maybe a craft area? then an exercise area? Then I think that I would split your sentimental from your husband's. Maybe having less in each space would be less overwhelming? Anyway, I have a lot of ideas considering it is your project, haha. You are doing such a great and consistent job working on this!
Good job Mrs Heart!!! The basement looks amazing and I’m proud of you for tossing a childhood item and a few things from the gift wrap bin. I love the idea of using the dresser to organize gift wrap. Let hubby clean the walls with bleach. That will kill any mold although the walls will likely remain discolored. Use Kilz to paint. It has a blocking ability so the black on the walls will not seep through. Tyler must be so excited! Keep up the good work and God bless you!
I would really love to see a video on setting up the play area with the boys helping to set it up. I think a rug wpuld be a brilliant idea for that area
Such huge progress on the sentimental items! You are really honing your joy meter and being able to keep the things that truly bring you joy and add meaning to your life.
Please make sure to use vinegar + tea tree oil on porous surfaces with mold, like the wooden bench. This is the only way to kill the tendrils of the mold deep within the wood. Otherwise it will grow back quickly.
You are doing great! I liked the idea of a garage/gym mat on the floor. Maybe paint both the walls and the floor (if there was mold on the floor as well) after the scrubbing, and then put a gym mat in the play area? Lots of love to the hard working Heart family!
When it comes to mold, I use bleach. Dilute it a bit with water and make sure you wear a mask, use a fan and wear gloves and it should be golden. But bleach is one of the only things have found that will permanently remove mold. And if you add a coat of mold resistant paint once it's dry, it shouldn't come back. I just want to say, you have done fabulous work! I hope you are so proud!
December 2023: my 47 yr old daughter just found a big bag of toys to give away. I have a bag of junk to sell, too. I gave my neighbor the 2 cookie tins I was saving. Every day, I get rid of 25 items. Tina, Al's wife
July 2024. I look at your progress towards your goals. My progress is also taking a few years. I'll let you know when I've reached my personal goals. Tina, Al's wife
Oh you have come a very long way Ms ♥️. I need your motivation to declutter my Grandson’s playroom and my Spare room upstairs. I usually have 3 days that I’m home. I need to pick 30 minutes and start on one section like you do. I too have boxes to go through 🤦♀️. Starting Nov. 1 that will be my goal. Pick a room and just start. Thank you for being an inspiration. ♥️
I would use diluted bleach to clean the walls. Then rinse all and let them dry thoroughly. Also, I think an air purifier for your basement would be a good idea since there’s not a lot of opportunity to get fresh air in that space. You are doing an amazing job. I’m so happy for you and your family to gain so much living space.
Love watching you declutter especially because you’ve won a battle with Hoarding. I’m in London UK and don’t know anyone who has a basement so it’s even better watching a makeover on a large area. Really looking forward to seeing the finished room. ⭐️
Yea!!!! You did it!!! I know doing this for the kids-play area it helped you push faster but that is awesome! After this part is done you will push harder for yourself! Use the rug if it gets clean enough, save money were you can! I am so pleased that you have a large declutter area!!!!🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
As you clean the mold, just a reminder to NEVER mix bleach and vinegar in the same area. Hiring a professional to help with the mildew might be a good idea since your kids will be playing in that area often. 🙂
We had mold professionals look in our basement. We got a mold spray at Home Depot and then they recommended vinegar and water solution rather than bleach. Vacuum with hepa filtered vacuum while cleaning. Make sure any area is wet before scrubbing even if u sprayed before and let it dry. I haven’t tackled our problem yet. It’s under the stairs. I’ve sprayed a bunch tho. Good luck. Yes the rug!
Melissa Maker from the Clean My Space RUclips channel recommends Concrobium for cleaning jobs that involve mold removal/prevention. However, seeing what looks like mold on the plastic covering the insulation at 13:55 makes me wonder if there is also mold in the wood structure and if it's a problem beyond what you can clean up on your own. I would honestly have a mold removal specialist come in to evaluate the extent of the problem before going any further. I think they have a way to test items like the plushies to see if they've been affected by mold too.
Congratulations! Air ventilation is an absolute must! Open basement windows if you can while working with the bleach and keep basement door open to allow fresh, clean air. Even if you use a fan while cleaning you still want a fresh source of clean air to be coming through (window/basement door) I second the idea of gloves, eye protection, (protect against splashes), and at least an n95 mask since its such a large area of wall to clean and cover. I wouldn't spend long extended times in the basement when doing the cleaning, and take breaks.
So Awesome....I just used white vinegar on my mouldy bathroom ceiling it has worked so well. Great organization in your basement.. well done and how much fun for your son. Blessings from NZ
Hi, I'm from Germany and I really enjoy to watch your Videos. It's such an inspiration for me. My basement is in a complete mess and looked way more messy then yours. Everytime after I see you I take 15 minutes to declutter a little space. For the mold: try Isopropanol. My husband works as a renovator when a house had a water or firedamage. He says that the best way to eliminate mold.
I think that’s a great idea to put all your gift bags and wrap in the dresser because then you don’t have to worry about squishing them and give it a nice coat of paint every thing is coming together 👍👍👍 I know you don’t like using bleach but it works wonders just go for a walk when your husband is cleaning it,plus open your door and a window so you can circulate the air , plus I would use straight bleach and just spray on and leave it for awhile and you will see the difference then get some nice soapy water with dawn dish liquid to wipe it down 👍👍🇨🇦
So cool to see how much progress you've made! Keep it up! Also be sure to let the cleaning/sanitizing product you apply to the basement walls and floors dry all the way before putting rugs or furniture back in. That way you can be sure the icky germs are gone and no mold will spore again!
That's amazing progress! I can imagine a weight has been lifted off you through all your hard work. I know i feel so much better after finally finishing my "Monica Closet" and that was just a little space bu jammed full of stuff!. Now I am on to tackling the garage...... I think?
Cheep mold and mildew cleaner. I am so happy for your family and you !! Great job. Working so much and still making time to share this video is amazing..and proud that you are pushing your self to keep your word to your son 🥰 That's great !! Maybe see if hubby can move dresser and other small dresser that is wrapped up by the steps for easy to get to when needing a bag or tissue paper 🥰🤔 can't wait to see what you do next. I know hubby will clean off camera 🥰
Amazing Tassie Tassie pile! You should be So incredibly proud! The play area is looking fantastic. I think you should definitely clean and reuse the rug in the basement for the play area. It’ll add a lovely cosy factor to the area. I’m so glad that the play room is nearly ready. You should be so incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. 🥰🥰🥰 The best way to clean the walls is to vacuum them 1st to get Heavy dust off. The best way to get rid of mould is to use bleach Neat on the wall! It will wipe straight off, my granny did that for years! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow so much progress!! 💖I can't wait until you can start going through and trimming down some of the bins, that will feel so satisfying to see a bunch of somewhat-matching bins stacked together neatly. I would also agree that using bleach for the walls is probably best if there's been mold down there... maybe you could rent a pressure washer or something strong like that to do the job.
Yayyyy! That's a great achievement! Those magazine clippings really resonated with me. I still have some from when we were building our house 25 years ago. It brings back all those memories and feelings. I really understand your mind.
Definitely some Clorox. A home insurance agent told me that it was the best way to remove any trace of mold and sanitize. And he was right. And rinse well, let it dry, so if you then paint, your paint is not going to be bleached by the product.
Hello there, I'm new to your channel and enjoy your videos. No matter how busy you are, you always find time to clean your house. It makes you more beautiful. Thank you for sharing great videos that inspire us!
If you are going to reuse that dresser, I would clean it thoroughly with hot water and a multi surface antibacterial cleaner. Then bleach. Then use dome goo gone to remove the stickers. If you want you could paint it, which might spruce it up!
you have done amazing progress! i think you should use the rug you have until you have and i also think you should keep the funishings that you have in order to organize everything until you have the money to buy something you really like :)
October 2024. I tossed a pile of papers this morning. Then I started to fill another bag for the Food Pantry- they're collecting warm clothing and accessories. Next will be another box for Goodwill. Tina, Al's wife
I’ve been making my own cleaner with white vinegar, water and lemons. Use that with a microfiber cloth, and you’ll be shocked how well it cleans things up. And absolutely, use the rug. If you have a cleaner, definitely save yourself the money. It will be fabulous 😄
Vinegar first to keep mold spores from releasing while you wash the walls, then rinse very well. After rinsing well, spray a thin layer of bleach to prevent future mold.
I would like to see a view from the stairs! Really would like to see the overall progress. You've been doing great! Love to see your always, recycle, reuse, sell. Your reducing what you buy because your finding things you need. And omg your always finding gift cards and money. Its really paying off! Will you do a Halloween decor take down and declutter, organize video? And will you do a Christmas bin organize, declutter, decorate video? Slowly I buy a holiday bin, like one a year, that's been helping me contain to a limited amount I would want to manage. I have one fourth of July, one Easter, one Valentine, one fall and four Christmas totes. I would like to organize a gift bag/ wrapping tote or area? You gave me an idea that maybe I can declutter one drawer out my room to see if it works🤷♀️ I appreciate you let us hear your thought process, it's really given me motivation.💕

Bleach is the only way to kill the mold.
@rowan orre once dry bleach leaves behind just salt (sodium) the chlorine evaporated.
Bleach does not penetrate and ends up becoming food for the mold it doesn't kill. Vinegar is the best way to eradicate mold and mildew.

Great job, can't wait to see how it turns out!
Wow keep plugging away. Love the progress.
Congratulations...what you have accomplished is no small task. Thanks for sharing!
A W E S O M E ! You did it! I love your sense of humor. Keep going!
I wouldn't spend long extended times in the basement when doing the cleaning, and take breaks.
you can donate the shipping peanuts back to UPS or another mail carrier I believe.
Excited to see more on the basement! Your sentimental stuff is getting pared down! Xxx ❤️🦘🦘🦘🐨
Wow! You've done so well. White vinegar will be great for the wall. Add it too a bucket of hot water with a bit of dishwashing liquid.
So Awesome....I just used white vinegar on my mouldy bathroom ceiling it has worked so well. Great organization in your basement.. well done and how much fun for your son. Blessings from NZ
Great job! You should be so proud of yourself
Definitely keep the rug! It looks like it’ll match your bench too :)
Great job. Worth all the hard word. So glad you feel better about your decisions. God Bless
Love the new space! 💜
Thank you so so much for sharing your tip ❤️🙏🏻❤️ I am here cheering you on when you want to Declutter your basement too!!
This is inspiring! Our basement needs a lot of work as well!
Absolutely amazing 😭💜
We used Clorox too in our basement. I was not happy to use chemicals. But it was very effective for cleaning and preventing mold from coming again.
❤️ It looks so good! I think you should definitely keep the rug. You can always replace it later! Good job!
Yay! Congratulations and way to go, you did it!! 🙌🏼
Brilliant achievement getting the play area cleared. I can't help with cleaning the walls but I'd say yes, definitely reuse the rug.
Use a Cleaning Bleach then Klitz Primer with mold and mildew preventer before you use DryLock.
I'm so excited for you! Amazing job! I can't wait to see the finished play area. Xx
You can get some cabinets and display you sentimental items in there instead of having them in totes it will free up alot of space
YOU DID IT!!! That’s so amazing well done!!
Congrats girl!! The decluttering unicorn needs to get down there and dance around!!! 🦄💃
Ohh you found a wall🤣 Good job once again😘😍💕
That looks amazing! Your sons must be so excited!
Amazing progress! Clean that rug and use it.
Vinegar first to keep mold spores from releasing while you wash the walls, then rinse very well. After rinsing well, spray a thin layer of bleach to prevent future mold.
Great job. Will you paint the floor also? I think that would look great painted and then putting the rug on top after it is cleaned.
Bleach is the only thing that will kill the mold!
Well done.. That space will be fantastic.
Paint the chest of drawers for the tissue paper and gift bags... Nice idea!!
Clean and use the rug. Save money!!
Oh how cute to paint it!!! Thank you for sharing that with me ❤️🙏🏻❤️
We are all rocking with you on this! Your childhood items will have less of a hold as time goes on, trust me!
If no mildew.....definitely reuse the carpet. 🌞
