    I often play this trick on my math students. I teach them-as did Prof. Hart-that each coin toss outcome is independent of any previous outcomes. Then we do a whole lot of exercises, like the examples Prof. Hart gave.
    In the exam, I ask almost identical questions-except, instead of coin tosses, now you're drawing cards successively from a well-shuffled deck (without replacing them, of course). And instead of heads and tails, it's now black and red cards. Ah, what joy it is to see their faces drop when they see their dismal grades!
    Lesson: Always double-check your assumptions.

    You touched on how most people use the numbers 1 - 31, but didn't specifically say pick some numbers above that. Like 123456 is BAD, but 49 48 47 46 45 44 is better. Maybe not, for the same reason.

    Not the lottery but, a few years back, someone realised that the UK football pools processes were a bit lax. It was possible to hear the results, fill in a form and hand it to one of the collectors (in Australia). The mistake they made was to test it on a medium sized win before going for the jackpot. Two wins close together attracted attention and they were caught....

    The Black Jack illustration through using the card counting technique which is very simple. Also using the Law of probability with it. It does not matter how many decks of cards there are, the law of probability are still the same. You just adjust your card counting to the amount of decks.

    I really don't think it's maths, it's just pure luck. I've tried for many years on Lotto and EuroMillions, it's very random.
    There are websites where you can look at a set of numbers, if they ever have come up from the 1st draw to the last one, most overdue numbers etc, makes no difference. I've had more luck using the lucky dip method than being analytical. Just when you think you get it (slightly), say it's been low numbers mainly in the last few draws, bound to be high numbers for the next one, nope, its low and mid range numbers.
    I've also been playing the same numbers for years now (one line each), occasional small win. I play on top, especially for the bigger draws/rollovers/special draws. BUT you have to be in it to win it. Pray I win it please, many thanks. ;p

    18:40 Leibniz wasn't wrong, you know-he had anticipated quantum "dice" centuries ahead of their official discovery. See, at the quantum level, you can't distinguish between 2 identical fermions. Meaning 5 6 and 6 5 are not two different outcomes, they're one and the same. And it has the same probability of occurring as 6 6.
    In the quantum world, even D'Alembert is correct-provided you "toss" two fermionic "coins" together, instead of tossing one coin twice. As before, HT is the same as TH. So you have 3 outcomes, not 4: HH, HT/TH, and TT. Each has 1/3 probability, so the probability of an H is 2/3-as D'Alembert said.
    22:04 American roulette wheels have _two_ green patches: 0 and 00. I tried explaining to them that 0 and 00 are mathematically the same, but they just wouldn't listen! Does math work in casinos at all?!!!

    • @bazsnell3178
      @bazsnell3178 Год назад +6

      Agreed. BUT it turns into a mathematical one when some people look at every single number drawn in the past and attempt to do frequency charts and such, to ''predict'' what numbers are more likely to be drawn than others in future draws.

    • @nHans
      @nHans Год назад +4

      True. The world we live in is a physical system-as is everything we interact with therein. We use math to model the physical world-to understand how it works, and to predict the future. For which we make several simplifying assumptions: fair coins, fair dice, fair deck of cards, honest dealer, unbiased lotto machine and roulette wheel, truly random outcomes, no external forces influencing the outcome etc.
      Do our mathematical calculations match real-world events? It depends on how much our assumptions deviate from reality. If you've assumed that everything is fair and above board, but in reality the lotto machine is rigged or the dealer is a mechanic-then no, your calculations will be way off!

    In theory yes, but in practice none of the different practical ways of picking numbers is 100% random! So, there is some kind of bias that it's introduced by the method of number picking that, if one becomes aware of it, then the person will have some kind of advantage in picking "more probable" numbers.

    Actualy the probabilities are wrong because every time they tried to work out the probability of throwing Dice it's wrong because they don't account for the dice landing on it's side or corner. While playing monopoly with your family it's more than likely you have thrown the Dice and they left the table and landed by a chair leg or table leg on it's edge so everyone says throw again and you do and the game moves on, but when you look at this scenario it's feasible to suggest that throwing the Dice in set amount of times will result at some point with the Dice on it's side or corner. So it needs to be input into any probability outcome otherwise it's not acurate 😊

    I have a question/dilemma about a math problem for you math experts: There's a sports lottery game where there's 14 football matches (each match can end in 3 ways, the local team wins=1, there's a draw=X, or the visiting team wins=2). Let's say for instance I have to guess 10 of those matches (1, X or 2). What are the chances of randomly guessing any of those 10 matches out of 14? I looked on various sites and they used the formula ''3 to the power of 10'' resulting in 1 in 59049 chance but it's incorrect and it's a ridiculously large number too, they calculated the chances assuming there's 10 matches in total and not 14. How can I calculate step by step the correct chances of guessing 10 out of 14 matches?

    Interesting lecture. Though I am still wondering about Leibniz's conclusion. i.e. equally likely to roll a 12 or 11 and that it's in error because 11 could be 6+5 or 5+6. I'm not disagreeing, and am not a mathematician, but if one rolls a 6, one must roll a 5 to get 11. If one rolls a 5, one must roll a 6 to get 11. Still only 1 way, even though either 6 or 5 can be first counted. Technically, one could say there are two ways to get 12, 6'+6'' and 6''+6', still only one way. You must roll a 6. Please don't tell me why this isn't so, I want to think about it a bit more. Just sharing my thoughts.

    • @teleosus1
      @teleosus1 Год назад +1

      I believe the difference is thinking it as throwing a pair of dice and not 1 die at a time.

    • @teleosus1
      @teleosus1 Год назад +1

      Though it would still seem that there maybe 2 ways to add up to 11, there is still only 1 way for the dice to be 11.

    • @teleosus1
      @teleosus1 Год назад +1

      It is true that die A can be either a 6 or a 5, a 2 out of 6 chance, but die B is dependent on whether die A is 6 or 5, a 1 out of 6 chance. It would seem that any odds advantage with die A is countered by die B.

    • @ErikOosterwal
      @ErikOosterwal Год назад

      There are only 36 possible outcomes for rolling two dice; you can write out all the combinations fairly quickly. If you think the probability of getting a sum of 12 is the same as a sum of 11, explain why it's also not the same probability of getting 10, 9, 8, or 7. Why are you twice as likely to roll a 7 as you are to roll a 10 and three times as likely to roll a 7 as you are to roll 11? 🤔🤓

    • @teleosus1
      @teleosus1 Год назад +2

      That's obvious. For example, regardless of which die is which, simultaneously or sequentually, there are 3 ways to roll a 7; 1+6, 2+5, 3+4. One can also say a 6+1, 5+2, 4+3, though that doesn't change the fact that if you have one number the other must be the other appropriate number. There is only one way to roll a 7 if one die is already a 6. Therefore, there is only one way to roll a 12 if one die is a 6, it just so happens that the other die is the same number required... 6. To roll an 11, it doesn't matter which die is the 6 and which die is the 5, 6+5 or 5+6, only that if one die is a 6 the other die must be a 5 and if one die is a 5 the other die must be a 6.

    I don’t think the odds of splitting US lottos are very high now. Only one of the top 10 jackpots was split at this point and I believe that was the first billion dollar jackpot so there was way more tickets bought than the “average” billion dollar jackpot. Still wouldn’t buy all the combos even if I could because that in itself changes the odds of splitting the jackpot. However, I do think cash values north of 500-550 million are actually technically worth playing as an individual.

    Can you use mathematics to help you win the lotto... NO!
    The plastic balls with numbers stamped on them in the lotto drum DO NOT have a memory and do NOT care about so-called hot and cold numbers... Every time a new lotto draw is made... ANY of the plastic balls with numbers stamped on them can be plucked from the machine.
    They all have the EXACT same chance of being drawn each time...
    The UK Lotto uses balls from numbers 1 to 59 and 6 main draw numbers are selected ... If you buy one ticket the probability factor of you matching all 6 numbers from the main draw on your one ticket is 1 in 45,057,474.
    If you buy a lotto picket all you are doing is playing .... Hunt the coincidence ... IF you match all 6 numbers drawn ..It is a PURE coincidence
    and nothing else. If enough people play "Hunt the coincidence" ..Someone will match all 6 numbers eventually.
    Sorry for being Mr. Logic ... I might be autistic...But I am NOT thick.

I wish I could take her to a billiard table and get her to show me in practical. It's not just about the measurements.
