I met you one late evening a long time ago, July 4, 2008 near Cal Expo, Sacramento…about a mile from the Elvas switch yard and very near the American River. My brother and I walked up on the levy to watch the fireworks and I found you sitting near the tracks. You said you were thinking about heading North to Washington State. Many many yrs later I found your channel and said to myself, “ Hey, I met that guy once”
Dear Mr Hobo Shoestring, i've watched your vids for along time. I respect you in every way. A true real passion of freedom you have. From 1 brother to another, be safe, god bless. And i am a fan, of Hobo Shoestring!
You're just one cool old school cat Shoe and you sir are an absolute treasure. Thanks for sharing more of your awesome adventures and many blessins to ya buddy👌👍💪😎✌💯
Such a gorgeous day! The skies in this vid are all so vivid, colorful, especially reflected in the lake. Love those long train shots- so hypnotic. Happy trails!
Good to see you getting ready to ride the rails again. I know it's where you're happiest. Love the Millennium Falcon shirt. I'm a Star Wars fan too. Safe travels. God bless
Shoestring talks about a ride similar to that in one of his casts. It was out West, super cold and the crew brought Him into the engine with them. They wouldn't take no for an answer.
It would be really something if one of the senior train engineers saw Hobo Shoestring's videos and invited him on a first class, long train ride with the crew!
Me too! I've had a Union Pacific crew let me ride in the lead locomotive with them from Sidney, Nebraska, to North Platte, Nebraska, back in like 1995 but it was around 5° below zero when one of the crewmen saw me riding a grainer at the end of the train and told me to ride up with them. He even stopped the train right before the yard to let me get off.

Well I know for a fact that if I was an Engineer and I saw you, knowing your vast experience and knowledge of the railroad system and all, that I would put you on the lead / head unit with me and my Conductor and I probably would have you sit in the Engineers (my) seat for a couple of miles and blow that horn (which is like music to people like you and I! ;-) you are salt of the earth in part of the fabric of America Shoestring and keep up with the wonderful videos and I thank you for all that you do from one, make that two big rail fans… my father who worked as a brakeman/treatment for 48 years out of the Cedar Hill yard in New Haven, CT and I worked out of there as well sometimes on the same day my father worked which to me was so good! I was walking my dogs this morning while listening to the beginning of this video… The sound of the freight train inside my ears was the most interesting and soothing ASMR experience I have had to date. Your videos are introspective and fascinating. Thank you for sharing your unique journey with everyone!
Thanks for the video and I wanted to be sure I mention that recently you thought that one of your videos might be a little bit boring. This subject of freight trains and the locations they bring us are so different from anything that we see in our own experience that it makes a great stress buster and distraction from the worries of our lives. Rest assured that we like them and don't be deterred from the people who drop in and say something mean before leaving.... it really isn't relevant to what you are doing and it is more a reflection upon what they are feeling personally rather than one on anything you are doing. I enjoy seeing them and I look forward to it.
@Shoestring you freak me out man,not by the wanderlust you have where you have a need to see the countryside in a way very few will ever see by hoping trains ,its the acquired knowledge of where every set of rails in the country will take you,i too have a deep wanderlust since returning from Vietnam in 1969 ,thats when my dad gave me hjs 1955 Harley Panhead and spent the summer touring the south eastern states with me and teaching me how to camp safely ,ill be 78 yrs old soon so its hard for me to stay out more than a month anymore and thats with me not riding my heavy ass Honda Goldwing & riding my Harley Road King or Fatboy ,and sleeping in motels ,i wouldnt last 10 days making camp every night, you sir have balls made of Tungsten Steel the way you travel ,not knowing when or where your ride is gonna stop or when youll have a chance to stock up on supplies seems super freaking tough to me,the man you are and how you have toured the country should give you A #1 status at any 1% bike club in the country ,even the most hard core nomad biker who rides 100,000 miles a year touring should step the f--k out of your way ,i know Americas major Highways & Expressways without using google but could never do what you do,im not so sure that many of your subs fully understand how difficult your chosen method of touring this great country actually is ,your a true American bad ass my friend .
