I've been doing dock and seawall repair work at a marina with my Hart tools. I keep a set on the boat in order to spare my other tools from the salt air. Every time I use the Hart brushless impact I continue to be amazed. It drove a 5/8 inch self feeding auger bit through two pressure treated 2x12s and a 10 inch pressure treated pylon with no issues. That same thing stopped a DeWalt XR with a 3ah battery. Although the longevity is yet to be determined I must say that they certainly have a lot of power.

I have this model of Makita and it is purpose built to be light, compact and no more than medium duty, aimed at the DIY user and/or professionals such as cabinet installers. To be fair, it is their entry level COMPACT brushless drill and is only slightly larger and more powerful than their black subcompact series. The Makita XFD12 would be a more appropriate apples to apples match up to this Hart drill, BUT it is an excellent value comparison since the Makita can be had as a kit for $99 most of the time and I assume that the Hart kit would be around the same price with the larger battery. I got my Makita kit for $79 which made it a better value for me since I prefer the quietness, as mentioned, as well as the size and weight over the bulk of the Hart. Also, the Makita can be repaired easily and inexpensively after the warranty period expires, whereas the Hart is more of a disposable tool after the warranty period expires. As poor as the Makita seemed to have appeared in this comparison, I think other factors such as size, weight, and refinement make up for it's perceived lack of performance. However, I enjoyed the video, but just feel that the Hart is a size class above this Makita and would match better with the XFD12 rather than this one. Great video tho, so thanks Dave!!

I think they're good if you catch them on sale (not clearance but even better). I have the whole line of Hart tools but I didn't pay full price for any of them.
For someone considering paying full retail price for each tool individually I believe you should pay a little more and get something like an 18v brushed Milwaukee or even consider the 12v line up.
I got most in combo kits like the 4 tool brushless combo kit for $149 right now. It comes with the 7¼" circular saw, ½" drill, ¼" impact, flashlight, 4ah battery 2ah battery, charger, and carrying bag for all of the tools. If you buy the circular saw by itself they want $128 but the 4 tool brushless combo kit is only $20 more.
My main gripe with them is the extremely inconsistent pricing not just online vs in-store but even having multiple listings online for various prices. I realize that's a problem Walmart's creating by not managing their online store better but it's pretty ridiculous. Hart wants about $75 just for the brushless drill but quite a few months back they had them online for $29. I understand things going on sale but the prices are just all over the place.

100 rpms more means less torque at the cutting edge, that's one of the reasons the lower brand companies go with lower gearing, it makes their machines look like they have more power than they actually do. Ryobi drills tend to all sit around the 1700 to 1800 rpm mark for the same reason, more torque gained for only a small drop in speed. Speed and torque combined is generally the preserve of the high end brands.

  • @Kayvoyager

I build pole barns for a living so I'm partial to the Makita line of tools. I get about 3 years out of a Makita that runs 3 inch screws all day. over the course of their lives, they get dropped off of barns with little ill effect. try dropping both off a pole barn roof a few times and then test them.

This makita drill is a compact drill, its more geared for lighter duty work. Any of the makita full size drills would be a wholw other ball game. The tasks he was doing with it are beyond what its meant to do. Just look at the size comparison between the two. I think this was more of a what you get for the price comparison. All I see you doing is demonstrating the overload feature of the Makita. You are overloading the drill due to using large diameter bits with the drill set on the high speed setting which it is not designed to do for overheating purposes. If the other drill is not doing this, and the user continued to use it in this manner, it would fry it. The video fails to depict the quality or ability of anything. It only indicates that one drill has a more advanced safety feature than the other.

Makita company didn’t improve their tools for years, they were just riding on their name. Now, Walmart’s drill beats makita. Don’t buy makita, their tools suck.
