I moved to MIlwaukee, but have one gripe. I drill out a lot of top plates to run cables and swarf (Or whatever the wood equivalent is called) keeps falling behind the trigger and limiting the speed :( Other than that its been great, I have even calibrated it a few times (Fell off my ladders onto the slab) and still works great.
I like my Makita in every way more than Dewalt and Milwaukee. Only down side to Makita is their battery life and heat diffusion.

I manage a tools department at Lowe's. Would love to see Kobalt added to these tests so I can better know how our house brand fares.
I’d like to see that too! I have a Kobalt 18v that I’ve had for around 4 years still running strong. I have a brand new Milwaukee FUEL and while it’s great, I still grab the Kobalt. Partly out of habit, partly because I like the grip a little better, and partly because it has never let me down.
I have the Milwaukee and my brother in law uses koblat xsr new line and i have to say for the price it’s super impressive
It’s junk
I'd like to know that too. Kobalt seems to offer great performance for price.
Best part of Kobalt tool is the package it came in, durable so you can take it back for a refund!
Makita puts a lot of emphasis on battery longevity. That’s why they have extra protection circuits built in to shut down the tool to let the battery cool-down/recover, and why they don’t like using fast charging to charge the batteries. While other brands don’t have a problem having you burn through batteries on occasion, then having to replace them. It’s not a bad thing, cause if you’re in a professional field where time is money, usually that time/money is worth way more than having to occasionally replace some batteries. On the other hand if you’re more of a DIY guy, or just don’t use power tools that often, then having to take a little longer to charge a battery, but have it last you longer, is not a big deal. To be fair tho, if you're a professional, you can probably afford to have multiple batteries, and always have one or two on the charger at all times...then it’s just a matter of tool preference.
Like a politician I’ve just talked myself in a circle arriving back to where we started, without saying much in between...so please feel free to send me your donation to the Useless Advice Campaign.
Makita does make a rapid charger that is insanely fast at charging the 5ah batteries. I love mine.
Yeah Makita sells what they call a “Rapid” charger, and the charging times are definitely adequate, and not the slowest out there. But it’s not one of those super chargers that charges a 5 Ah battery in like under 15-20 minutes. Makita has commented on this before, they have been asked about it, and they have said that they care more about overall life-span, longevity, and degradation cycle of their batteries - than ultimate charge speed. Cause again, a DIY guy cares about his batteries lasting, and a professional can always afford an extra set of batteries that also live longer.
There was a time when battery drills were almost useless for occasional users because they had nickel-cadmium batteries that lost all their charge in a couple of weeks even when not being used, and often a charger that took 10 hours to get to full charge. They were OK if you used the drill every day and charged it overnight. The invention of the lithium-ion battery has done wonders for the practicality of battery powered tools.
Can definitely attest to makita batteries lasting. I still have batteries from 2013 that are carried in my toolbag for my impact wrench and recip saw.
thats interesting but i live in a hot country, that thing would probably cut out constantly if i needed to do a heavy days work with it, he said 20 mins for battery to cool, thats automatic fail for me,would be so annoying

The Makita overheating the battery seems like a common theme for it.
Yeah, on a lot of their tools it really does seem like they run the battery with a lot less safety margin than some of the other brands. That would explain some of their impressive performance and numbers on (basically) identical batteries to competitors.
@@glahtiguy maybe they were going for longevity of the battery? it does have a 5 year warranty I think
I think that really holds them back from calling them a second place honestly.
From an analytical standpoint. The top 3 were terrible, with Milwakee and Dewalt having the Electric clutches, waiting to snap a weak fastener. But the Makita with it's weak battery gave it horrible standing as well. The Bottom 3 were exactly that, the ones you really shouldn't consider.
I wait for round 2, maybe there is best of the best hammer drill. Or maybe they all have a really bad single fault that you just live with as a consumer.
I wanna know.
I've been a Makita user for 20 years or so. As a contractor I rely on my tools and have routinely put bigger hole saws etc than are definitely recommended. Makita builds safety's into their tools for longevity, all the while still being very productive. The batteries getting hot is definitely a thing, but you really have to put them to extremes to get there. Makita actually builds in an overload safety into the drill that shuts it down when extreme over torque is experienced, attempting to save the user from injury.
Makita’s battery management is their weakness. The tools are solid, and are often praised for their smooth operation and balance.
My father & grandfather were contractors and swore by Makita power tools. Good to see Makita holds up well in your testing too.
Thanks for the feedback.
Makita tools seem to last forever, not quite as good as milwaukee but certainly longer lasting

How about battery powered SDS hammer drill comparison. that would be great Second Chapter to this!
I was just thinking to propose the same! Great idea!
I second this!
I would especially like to see a comparison of the cheapest, nastiest Hazard Fraught SDS rotary hammer against one of the fancy hammer drills. I don't really understand the utility of hammer drills when you can get decent cheap SDS drills that (I suspect) destroy even the nicest hammer drills, all the while using cheaper and more robust bits...
Would need to differentiate between SDS-+ & SDS-Max. Based on our experience the Hilti TE30 & TE60 would dominate both, except it’s slow battery charger. The Hilti however is much pricier. I’d be very interested to see how the Makita X2 SDS-Max does. Very well priced compared to Hilti
Right. Between a normal combo drill/driver and a cordless SDS, I really don't even consider owning this class of tools anymore.
A parallel comparison of various cordless SDS tools could verify that bias. Maybe there is a reason to own a regular hammer drill?

Team Makita here. Great informative testing as usual. The only comment I have is that the Makita battery may have been affecting results. 100+ minutes to charge seems odd. I have a rapid charger that tops off a 6ah battery in under 60 minutes. The long charge time and the overheats makes me question the battery.
Thanks for sharing.
I had Makita at home... is mabybe 7 years old now... and I never had a single problem with it. It came in a box with a lamp (I never used) so I have basically two bateries, still original ones. There's no indicator so you simply feel when it's running out of juice. The baterry is recharged in like 30 minutes and if you're doing some lighter work, it can easily hold for few hours.
Yeah I was going to comment the same thing 108 minutes? That's 12 minutes shy of 2 hours? Come on now!

Milwaukee definitely came out on top, with the caveat you mentioned. I feel Dewalt came in 2nd, didn’t overheat like Makita which I’d knock way down for.
Thanks for the feedback.
Agreed, if it overheats that's a not a good thing. I also noticed that on two of the test. Great video as usual.
Exactly, although having the highest RPM, breaking down during test (so to speak) cant have it at 2nd place.
For me Makita finished rightfully in 2nd place, because while it overheated in extreme tests, it is suitable for low-torque applications. Cordless hamer drill is kinda jack of all trades and while I like the tool that can occasionally dig into concrete, I image doing lot more low-torque work with it 🤷🏻.
Perhaps the others just don’t have a high temp cut off? I’ve no idea if that’s the case but that’s what I assumed.

You're killing me here! I need a brand X hammer drill, brand Y impact driver, brand Z shop vac, etc...Can you do a video on the best overall powertool ecosystem? Since so many tools these days don't come with batteries or a charger, it makes sense to pick a brand and stick with it, even though a different brand may have slightly better tools in some categories. I'd like to see a test that includes 4-5 different tools all in the same ecosystem.
I say that makita has the best ecosystem. Their product lineup is huge suits for everyones budget, from the cheapest to the expensive ones. They may not the very best, but their tools are built to last. I personally had the cheapest makita cordless drill, been using it for various heavy duty job, still going strong for many years. Milwaukee might be the best, but they offers only the best tools with hefty price tag which is a concern for most home users.
I like my Ryobi shit. Not building houses or skyscrapers, but does just fine with HVAC.
Only burned up one drill so far, but I was abusing the shit out of it with a 4" hole saw. Got through 3 and a half floor joists* before it was totally smoked.
Thank you for the video idea!
I'd say there's little question Milwaukee is the over-all top; they win or place 2nd in almost every test and have one of if not the largest tool offering, especially in the mechanic's tool range such as impacts and ratchets. The only question in my mind is M12 or M18 - they have put a lot of time and money into the M12 lately and the newest impacts are pushing 250 lbs or more. Only negative is as noted - not the cheapest.
I'd recommend the latest Ridgid tools for most of your needs. You can't beat the warranty. You must register the tools within 90 days then you get a lifetime warranty on batteries, chargers and tools if purchased as part of a kit. Seems a no brainer for the money and their tools would be in the top 3 in most comparisons. Just wish he would test Ridgid more often. I believe their brushless Hammer drill would be 1st or 2nd here as I've used Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt and Ridgid.
“We’re definitely going to test that” as if “we’re going to test that” wasn’t daunting enough.

You are welcome! Thanks for the suggestion.
I bought a Rigid pump. Came with a float switch. Float switch malfunctioned so it left the pump on and burned it out. I tried to get it replaced under the "lifetime warranty" They were like "Ok, we have a place that can repair it near you." So I call that place and they are like, we are commercial, can't do it. So I call Rigid back and they say "OK, sterilize it and send it to this address and we will see if it falls under warranty". So I needed to spend my $ to mail a heavy pump across the country to see if it fits in their warranty. Meanwhile my house has no septic pump. Um no. So my experience with Rigid lifetime warranty is not a good one.
I just got a brand new kit for the impact and hammer drill of Rigid and I’m so disappointed my 10 year old porter cable out preformed it it in my daily use

You have no clue how much time, effort, and money goes into videos like these. BTW he has done plenty of videos with Ridgid products.
@@OldsXCool lol downvotes exist for a reason. if I support the channel via Patreon, I think it's okay to critique the videos
I'd love to see a video comparing battery powered rotary hammers. I'd rather have a separate drill and rotary hammer rather than a compromise unit like these.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I second this suggestion! Hammer drills are great for Tapcons and the like (ie - 3/16" or 1/4" holes in masonry) but if I needed to drill a 3/4" hole I'd definitely break out the SDS rotary hammer.
I found this while looking for information on how effective the hammer drill function on these is. I guess I need to make my own test setup =)
I leave this under every video I watched, it helps the algorithm.
I really appreciate your videos! I’ve been doing my own research and it always ends with people saying, “it’s just personal preference.”, but your videos actually show them in operation and their pros and cons. I have friends that like Milwaukee, some like Ryobi, and some like Makita. Not to mention the other friends that like Snap On or Matco. It’s nice to see that I won’t have to spend I ridiculous amount of money for a proper good tool.
Thanks so much! Thanks for sharing.
We have seen impacts, cordless ratchets and now drills but when are we going to see the toughest rotary tool??
Thanks for the video idea.
My monies on the Bosch SDS MAX.
Its Hilti, hands down
@@TheUniquePlumberman I wonder what kind of test setup you would need to repeatably test and compare SDS-MAX rotary hammers. That's a lot of huge boulders and old concrete blocks...
In my experience if it is possible to move an object, then you don't need SDS-MAX :)
@@Genesis-fy3cp Hilti is good. Guys I know with those tools are very protective of them. "Hey, can I use that? Sure!.... Um, are you just gonna watch me the whole time?! Yes..."
Ron from Ontario. Canada..... What a "great job" you do for the consumer. It sure does open one's eyes on which brand are better than others. And you do such a thorough job. Can't think of anybody else that can meet to your standards. Keep up the good work and I'll be watching for you on your next endeavor.
Thanks so much, will do!
I would have liked to have seen the Ridgid hammer drill included in this test
I've been wanting to see the kobalt 24v put up against the competition for a while as well.
I agree. I feel like most power tools he does ridgid is never included. The vacuum dominated thats for sure.
Ridgid and milwaukee come out of the same factory. Both are made by TTI. Dewalt is made by stanley, makita is still independent company
Rigid is good but not great. Had a friend of mine do a test and rigid was not worth it as it is even heavier and also did not perform as long or as well. Still is way better than kobalt and ryobi
@@thekikendallsautoandrandom1271 it wouldn't even keep up
Haven't watched yet but my money's on milwaukee
Great brand
Same
I love making predictions before I watch!
Dewalt and Milwaukee are always solid choices. Both make great tools.
I have not had a Milwaukee fail on me yet! however, those tools just happen to belong to the company that I was working for at the time..
You should help guys pick out their future wife. “Britney claims that picking a place to eat on Friday nights will be “easy.” Michelle claims she’ll let her husband play golf on the weekend, we’ll test that.”
Haha priceless
YES.!!!!!!
Great idea👍
Best to keep them "girlfriends", that way when they go through the "change" you can cut a trail & move on without who gets what issues!
With a one year folllow up test!
Possibly the coolest video I’ve seen this year. THANKS so much. I know this took A LONG TIME to put together.
Much appreciation.
Thanks and you are welcome!
Huge fan of the channel! And as a stone/brick mason, I’d suggest testing similar products in that field: masonry bits, diamond blades, and diamond cup grinding wheels. Thanks for everything you do!
You are welcome! Thanks for the video idea.
Can you test Deep Cycle batteries, AGM, Lithium etc.. Your channel is amazing!
Fortnine tested motorcycle batteries. TLDR; Just stick to ye olde Lead Acid batteries.
specification: exists
Project Farm: We're gonna test that!
I have the Milwaukee. We used it to power a John Deere 60 Skid Steer, drove it around the driveway with the kid in the engine bay running the drill. Drained a 5ah battery in about 5 minutes. But it worked!
Thanks for sharing.
Just wanted to stop by and say thank you for the videos! You've been killing it!
You are welcome!
Please test electric winches! I'd really like to know how the cheaper options, like Harbor Freight's, stack up to the more expensive winches. Power is important, but honestly, speed, features, and ease of use are just as important to me.
That would be a cool video
I'd love to see this but damn would it be an expensive video, the winch on my tow truck probably translates to about $800 and that's by no means what I'd consider to be an expensive winch.
HFT winch has a 10 second duty cycle then needs to cool off as per manufacturer's packaging
I love the “We’re going to test that” comment every time after reading the spec sheet.
It comes across as, you bastards better be telling the truth.😎
I've watched so many of your videos. Gotta say, my favorite part is always, "we're gonna test that." Cannot get enough of it.
Thanks!
“We’re gonna test that.” 💪🏻
Thanks for watching!
I watch these with my son. He anxiously waits for that line in every video. Same for Steve1989’s “nice hiss”.
I have all Milwaukee tools and I have to be honest, that drill I really think that one day my wrist will fall victim to it because of how much force it has. I was drilling a 15mm hole and was holding it by the back of drill but not from bottom and it proper slapped me in the jaw
Haha! A few months ago I was in a tight spot with an inch and a quarter(31mm) spade bit. My drill almost knocked me out.
Thanks for sharing.
I damn near sprained my wrist with a Milwaukee
Please do a video comparing ratchet straps!
the lack of BS in this video is mind blowing! literally everything i needed to know, told exactly as i wanted to hear it, thank you!
You are welcome!
Just one man's opinion, but delicate fasteners should be done by hand. That being said, Milwaukeeeeeeee!
Agree. I have other tools for delicate fasteners. A hammer drill would not be my go-to for brass screws or anything small or light.
I use the Milwaukee 2401 Hex screwdriver for lighter duty stuff. Use the M12 FUEL tools for most other, and have the Ridgid Gen5X and Octane, that I started with, for the few times when I need more power than I can get out of my M12.
Thanks for the feedback.
Milwaukee really seems a no BS tool. Makita's overheating problem is a bit disappointing.
@@dingdingdingdiiiiing I have makita at work and honestly never seen this problem before. Could be an old battery.
You and AvE are my heroes. I don't make a purchase any more without watching one of your videos first.
Last time I was this early, Project Farm cut off a piece of rail from the tracks by his house to get more weight for a test, then put it back in place with some JB Weld good as new.
lol. Nice!
VERY NICE VIDEO! ALSO CONGRATULATIONS FOR 2M SUBSCRIBERS! YOU REALY DESERVE IT!
Liked this before I even watched the video. THANK YOU FOR THE TEST!
Thank you very much!
137 people are mad that their Bauer tool wasn't tested.
When in doubt, go Milwaukee. You just have to be able to feel when the bolt is tight which is fairly easy considering the trigger control on that thing. Good video as always
Imo makita an milwaukee are aqually as good and the best choices in every aspect, and dewalt is not bad either and their 60v line is very good
@@kukkuud2105 I didn't like makita overheating issues here, when I work on something I don't have 20 minutes to spend waiting for damn thing to cool down every now and then.
@@gorjy9610 I don't think that is a Tool problem. I have multiple Makita Tool's from a to z and never had an Heat problem and they must Work hard. I think that his Battery has an defect, otherwise i can't imagine. At Work i buyed Millwaukee Tool's, did get an frickin deal on it and the Ecosystem of Millwaukee is terrific, a lot's of Tool's for one Battery. But at home i only have Makita, terrific Tool's that last for long. And maybe because, i like the Japanese precision....:)
Yep i have this tool, m18 bit driver 1/2 and 3/8 impacts as well as 90° impacts, heated jackets angle grinders etc, milwaukee will always be my go power tool.
@@black666bull9 maybe it was but knowing his passion for details I wouldn't be surprised if he use second battery after first overheat.
I'm not sure they made any part of it in Japan btw :)
I arrived looking for the 'best' battery drill to treat myself to after a lifetime with a budget B&Decker (which is still kicking :) I'm leaving with a sense of awe at how solid all the machines are - even the budget. Gonna go with the most affordable of the top 3 because it makes the most sense to me. Big thanks to the host for all the work testing! subbed
Thanks! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Really appreciate your videos and all of the effort you put into your testing criteria, however on this one, I would have really have preferred to see the Dewalt "Flexvolt advantage" Hammer drill being tested & compared using the Flexvolt battery instead of (or in addition to) the basic 20V 5ah battery. Especially sInce this is Dewalts newest model and it is specifically designed to perform best when used with a Flexvolt battery. That's one claim I'd like to see put to the test. THanks again✌
Great suggestion! Thank you.
So much prep must have gone into this video, thank you.
You are welcome!
I always like to see Ridgid tools tested. Maybe next time you can include it. Although I think the Milwaukee is very similar to Ridgid.
Great suggestion! Thank you.
In my opinion leave Ridgid at the store. I dont know on power tools but on pipe wrenches and adjustable wrenches I thought Ridged was great, until I tried warranty one. You pay to ship the broken tool to their lab for them to test it and decide if they want to warranty the tool. All the while you are out a tool. You can buy 3 of their competitors tools and have a spare when you break one. Take it back to the store and have it replaced no questions asked. When I went to the Ridged store they just laughed and gave me a phone number. Screw Ridged.
@@calvins1837 ridgid power tools and ridgid plumbing tools are not really affiliated they just share a name, I've heard the power tool warranty is pretty good. Guy I knew had a table saw that quit after 7 years and they gave him a new one
@@calvins1837 I use the Dewalt and Ridgid and the Ridgid blows away the Dewalt
@@ProjectFarm correct, when my 9amp $165 dollar battery failed I did pay to ship it but 1 week later I got a call to come pick up battery and to my surprise it was a brand new one!! Not mad at all
Genuinely surprised how well Hart did in these tests, _considering the price!_
I guess if a Do-it-youselfer needs a Hammer Drill for very occasional use, the Hart might be worth looking into.
Thanks for the feedback.
Coming in a bit late, but Hart tools are actually really good. They're made by the same manufacturers of Milwaukee tools but at a consumer price point. So, basically, higher quality engineering with a bit cheaper build. People think less of them because they signed some deal with walmart, but honestly for the average homeowner theyre great. 90% of the tools I own are hart and Ive never had a problem with them.
@@aramilalpha1So, basically green Bosch
This channel is like reality tv shows for men!!! 😂 at the end of the videos we talk about it in the comments ... #TheBest 💯
The main thing I’ve found about drilling concrete, you have to back the bit out to clean the dust out of the hole, I’d love to see if there was a difference between backing it out to clear the dust vs straight down
Thanks for the video idea.
@@ProjectFarm it would be cool to see a comparison with these hammer drills vs a really hammer drill like the Bosch. That way you can see if it’s worth it in time savings to maybe by a dedicated tool.
This is true. You need to clear the flutes every so often, especially with a rotary hammer.
@@ProjectFarm Hi Todd. On other words, you're accepting the challenge (what kind of test rig will you come up with to keep things objective). Thanks.
Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
As long as he does all drilling the same its a far test. Thats all we can ask
Man he is a great guy he always make the best contents for us thank you 😃
On the back of this and other power tool tests I bought this Milwaukee Hammer Drill/Driver. Also, buying into the Milwaukee battery/charger system, because I have an eye on other Milwaukee power tools in the future.
Milwaukee's European version of the 2804-20 is the M18 FPD2 and is made in Germany. In comparison to my ancient Bosch cordless, the build quality is like night and day. The Bosch is made well enough, but the Milwaukee takes it to a whole new level and feels rock solid. Looking forward to using it.
Thanks for the feedback.
A (tactical?) flashlight comparison would be very interesting indeed.
Thanks for the video idea.
Yes but which of the 8000 "tactical" flashlights should he compare....
Hope to see a sandpaper comparison soon! We all hate sanding
Thanks for the video idea.
Just buy 3M and never look back. By far, the best there is.
Like the other person said, 3M. Always 3M.
IDEA- test different brands of plywood for strength & weather exposure. I've found that cheap ACX or BCX ply from big box stores is terrible with weather exposure
This is exactly what I needed to know to buy a drill that works well with brush attachments. The milwakuee doesn't stall like others I've tried in first gear when shoving the brush hard into carpet.
Thank you.
