Having a trigger definitively helps with this piece. Also being able to trill and double tongue would add a lot to this piece and make it your own for an awesome audition. Memorize it..
@@jessecohen4517 since there is there is no note lower than f in the piece (despite the pedaltones) u won't need a trigger. In fact the low f will sound better in sixth position rather than with trigger on most trombones
Gustav Schmidt exactly. I played this on a regular tenor trombone and on my double trigger bass and while it was easier in some places with the triggers, it sounded better with the tenor.
way to go to fit a complete concerto with 3 movements into 10 minutes and still make it feel whole and well balanced. other composers can't fit the exposition of their first movement into this timeframe...
Tuba Dave Um.... to be fair, the composer died in 1908. Just a tad over a century. But I understand what you’re saying tho. Very different style of music at the time.
This is either: Christian Lindberg - trombone Tapiola Sinfonietta, conductor-Osmo Vanska ç1993 OR Christian Lindberg - trombone Kosei Wind Orchestra, conductor Chikara Imamura ç1997
@@johnries5593 I play euphonium, and this has been one of my absolute favorite peices of music for over 25 years. I'm pretty sure I used the second movement for an audition back then.
Omg I played some of this, definitely the opening anyway, for my 16+ Music exam back in the 1970's. I was adjudicated by Roy Newsome, one of the world's most famous brass band players/conductors/composers and, as a player of only 2 years and not all of that on trombone, I panicked. Needless to say it went badly and I failed the subject too. I can still remember the opening and it still makes me nervous. After 40 years of playing, less 15 years away from it, I would probably still be rubbish lol. 😅
I'm actually good at trombone. I was in my state's allstate honor band in 7th grade and eight grade. If you still don't believe me, here is a link to the 2017 california allstate honor band results. If you can do this in 8th grade you must've been raised with parents who forced you to play it when you were a toddler. I only played the first movement a few days ago and I'm a freshmen in college/
Listen to Morceau symphonic if you haven’t it’s incredible as well :) Here’s a link to the RUclips if you want it : ruclips.net/video/96hrY2hs5pE/видео.html
@@tracymiller1149, Lindberg is overrated in my opinion. I still have a lot of respect for him, but his tone and articulation for the most part does not appeal to me.
8th grade?! I never even heard of this piece until 11th grade. And even then, it was very difficult for me. I know I would’ve been slaughtered by this piece in 8th grade. I take it the 8th graders ur referring to are Chinese students, correct?
Good luck on playing it. I'm thinking of using the first movement as my audition piece for the Marine Corps Band. And the name of that CD would be great lol
When middle school band is too boring - this is what i go to. Print out sheet music and spent an hour in my room working on first two pages. At least it wasn't simplified.
I lost the CD a while back, I apologize sincerely. And things didn't turn out as expected for my eighth grade year. I learned Concerto, only to find out a week later I was going to play Cavatine Op. 44 by Camille-Saint Seans. It's in tenor clef, and I'm looking very forward to starting to post videos of my personal trombone performances.
I hope to be able to one day gain the skills needed to play this piece like how it was played in this video. At the moment I can only play the first movement slowly lol. Going to take a lot of practice to play the third movement.
7th grade *dab* but if you play this at a young age (including me) you are more likely to be focusing on the technical parts of it and it wouldn’t be as musical, where as if you played it at an older age, you could focus more on the musicality
So everyone should probably check out the real version, this is just the audio file from another video here on RUclips. Probably why there is no video....
I suggest playing it on a speed where you won't make any mistakes, and then keep increasing the speed until you can play it on the actual speed. At least, that's how I study pieces..
JakNife i am also a junior in high school, and also using this piece for my area band audition. i take it REALLY REALLY slow when i'm learning something new (like 30bpm) and slowly increase by 5 until i hit full tempo
Long tones and slow, slow slurs. I spend about my morning sessions (after breakfast, a shower, and 5 minutes of breathing and buzzing) warming up my lips and improving skills. I begins with 10-15 minutes of slow whole notes (quarter=40) ranging from b-flat in first all the way down an octave and a tri-tone to e in seventh. Then I do slow slips slurs (quarter=60) starting on low b-flat. I do two, three, four, and five, six, and 7 partial slurs. After that, u work on skills. The embouchure focus one must utilize really helps his tone, endurance, and range.
lavanic thekidrs It is Lindberg, I was disappointed in the opening and other sections being down an octave from the version that I had. Yet great playing by him as usual, and it's only a few phrases that have that.
+Young Trombones To the best of my knowledge, the ORIGINAL version was in the lower octave. Other editions were since released that had some parts taken UP an octave from the original.
This isn't Christian Lindberg, in his recording he does the second cadenza in his own style- which is amazing whereas this performance the cadenza is as written
This is the arranged version. Certainly not Rimsky's original orchestration. It is way too heavy and has a whole bunch of extra stuff that isn't in the original.
+Tokkemon To the best of my knowledge, the ORIGINAL version was in the lower octave. Other editions were since released that had some parts taken UP an octave from the original.
I highly doubt this is Lindberg. He has a very "European" style and uses a lot of vibrato. I could be wrong, but to me this sounds nothing like Lindberg.
I remember having his CD when I was in high school, 25 years ago, and I memorized every second of it, he did the cadenzas quite a bit differently, most notably, the use of pedal tones.
Philharmonic Wind Orchestra conducted by Marc Reift
Trombonist: Robert Kozanek
Who dared to dislike this????
This is beautiful :')
I am one of the many who fell in love with this piece. The way it ebbs and flows is wondrous and beautiful.
Very beautiful. I love Rimsky-Korsakov, but in 50 years of listening to his work, I had not heard of this piece.
Why can't I like this twice, I have two thumbs to point up.
Having a trigger definitively helps with this piece. Also being able to trill and double tongue would add a lot to this piece and make it your own for an awesome audition. Memorize it..
And being able to read tiny notes in the kadenza
My teacher is making me triple tongue
Trigger is a must for the low notes

you do realize that you are writing to a composer that has been dead for hundreds of years
But I do agree completely
Scaredlimabean74 i am actually addressing other contemporary "modern" composers :)
So be it :)
Not trying to create any hard feelings

Yeah, if he came along 50 years later he could have been a Beatle.
What a big sound! Perfect for this style of music.
This is one of the better versions on RUclips, good job
Playing this piece for solo and ensamble for my sophmore year in high school this year. Thank you for this great recording/or video

My all time favorite trombone some to play its just so Cachy with the whole band

This is from the album Opening Night by the Philharmonic Wind Orchestra... I couldn't find anything about who was playing trombone though.
very cool piece - why aren't there more concerti for trombone?
Or euphonium?! We always get left out LOL
