  • There are many species of Porcupine around the world in fact there is about 29 different types, each with their own unique look, size and shape. The North American porcupine can reach a weight of over 35 pounds! It is a fantastic climber and has built in climbing hooks on their front as well as hind paws. Their prints in mud and snow are easy to identify with only 4 toes in the front and 5 in the back. When they climb, you can see them using their tail to actually push against the bark of the tree to lend support much like you would see from some bird species like the Brown Creeper and several types of Woodpecker. They can eat as much as 10% of their own body weight each day. That's something I can not accomplish, despite years of trying...ahem... ;-)
They are an amazing animal, wonderful to admire and very much belong in the northern forests they call home. Let's take a moment to get to know this incredible species, the Porcupine one animal, with thousands of points.

Loved your video! Thanks so much. I have never gotten the chance to see one but two years ago one was nearby. I got so mad when I heard that the neighbor killed it when it was just sitting up in a tree. He thought it was going to attack his beagle. He sure needs to learn more about wildlife.
