This is an interesting technicality. I feel like most people already know that the Japanese "Kikuchi" scene is actually a Yamamoto track taking "inspiration" from Propaganda's A Secret Wish album. However the American Faulconer one is interesting because it was a case of being changed multiple times. Originally it had a very different track entitled "Frieza's Death" written for it, but Funimation requested changes and it wound up having this heavy metal tone. Regardless how you feel about it, it's not what the composers originally went for. You can actually hear it crossfade out at 01:48 and hear the new track edited in if you listen carefully.
And the thing with the Yamamoto track is it was made 9 months before this episode’s air date, so it was effectively just a throwaway MONOLITH instrumental made for its specific Hit Song Collection (complete with an “overture” version). But they pretty evidently built the scenes each part was used in around those parts.

There's technically a 2nd version of the Yamamoto score for this scene playing The Braveheart Challenges the Strong, before they switched over to the Kikuchi score. This was before they realized the true extent of his plagiarism and replaced his score entirely
@@SkyAeria The Faulconer version was subject to heavy meddling by Funimation so personally I don’t like it. Of course, even beside that since the track changing every 6 seconds or so wasn’t as good as having just one track that works for the scenes from beginning to end. Far as Kikuchi Kai… well it has a similar issue with normal Z (the track the episode 120 scene was structured around is Hit Song Collection Yamamoto).
Kikuchi the best one by far for this scene. Feels very nostalgic while also fitting for a character from the future. Faulconer was good until the abrupt change is music when trunks was about the slice freezypop. Yamamoto I’m neutral.

I really wish the Kikuchi score had more thought put into it for Kai. Gives a great sense of surprise and "Trunks doesn't mess around." Faulconer Productions does a great job with tension throughout the series, and this music definitely conveys an unforgettable shock-factor. The issue is that the scene never gets a chance to breathe with the music constantly playing and switching. Unless Faulconer handled the sound mixing for each episode, I put the blame more on Funimation. I love the Kikuchi score... for the original anime. For Kai's quicker pace, a lot of the classic themes simply don't fit, and some of the deeper cuts had to be used. This scene is actually an example of where it works, thanks to the fast pace (Feels like everything is happening so suddenly), and those moments where the music stops, to let it sink in that Freeza just got sliced in half, was a stroke of brilliance. Still, I think it's probably the weakest of the four.
The problem with the Kikuchi score in Kai is how half assed and limited the music placing was, if they replaced Yamamoto's ost properly it could have been even better than Z.

That makes so much more sense now because I've watched through all of Kai at least a few times and one thing that always bothered me was how often they re used the same soundtrack/music for some scenes, especially during climactic moments. I did a little digging on the Internet Archive and it seems like a lot of Yamamoto's music was already finished for Kai, and some people have gone as far as re editing in his music for the entire series, along with some of Sumitomo's scores as well (which I guess must have been pulled from Super's soundtrack). @@cheeseisgood17 When Kai was originally being made it had an entirely new soundtrack designed to give an updated more modern feel to the show, but about halfway through the new composer Kenji Yamamoto was fired for plagiarism and had his new soundtrack replaced by songs from the original DBZ soundtrack by Shunsuke Kikuchi, but the replacement was a rush job done as quickly as possible to get the episodes back on air so they used a small selection of tracks and didn’t bother matching the replacement score to how the songs originally were in Z. Also in the case of this particular scene the song used in Z was actually an insert song composed by Yamamoto, so it couldn’t be re-used anyway.
@@funkybunko Thank you for making sense of this for me! I do remember hearing about Yamamoto being fired over his music in some of the Budokai games. Interesting how they got rid of him in the middle of developing Kai. Very interesting!
@@cheeseisgood17 Actually, the Buu Saga in Kai (aka Kai The Final Chapters) had a new soundtrack composed by Sumitomo right before he started working on Super. The upload you found on archive was most likely the one I made with the official Yamamoto score for the Saiyan & Frieza Sagas, a Fan Edited Yamamoto Score for the Cell Saga and the official Sumitomo Score for the Buu Saga.
@@funkybunkoohhh, I see. Yea 😅 looks like one of the two uploads I came across is indeed your upload. So they officially added Yamamoto's music until the end of the Freeza arc before phasing out his score completely, then the Cell arc edit is most likely how it would have been presented I presume. I skimmed through some scenes and really enjoyed the differences! I am definitely gonna have to re watch the entirety of it now. Thanks so much for filling me in!
BRUCE FAULCONER
Trash
Bruce Faulconer's soundtrack all the way!
Quem é esse herege?
jaja horrible
faulconer didn't write anything. he wrote like three songs for that soundtrack and stole credit from his team of producers/writers, scott morgan and mike smith. and even then it's mediocre, take off ur nostalgia goggles lol
first one doesnt fit at all sounds like me watching DBZ while on the elevator and the song comes up.
second one is the best imo and og to dbz (grew up with)
third one fits really well as well better than the first one but then i sometimes miss the og badass song moments in bruce.
Because we all know elevator music has banging music
definitely bruce. some weirdos out there prefer the 1st example lol
@@TheWitch297 So? Yeah it's the original music intended, not some random synths
@@miadatenshi9903 first off, I was playing around a bit. secondly, those random synths managed to get millions of ppl in the U.S. interested in anime as whole back in the day. I think it did it's job. certainly did for my childhood. there will always be a debate over which version of the show is better. oh, and there's nothing wrong with being a weirdo lol
How tf does the first one not fit?? This shit got me scratching my head bro. And the 3rd one def ain't better.
Dang really trying to tempt to watch Kai with that banger lol
Vengo a ponerle la falda
Bruce faulconer all the wayyy
1. Z kikuchi score
2. Z Kai Yamamoto score
3. Z Bruce faulconer score
4. Z Kai kikuchi score
The only right opinion.
“Z Kikuchi” actually used a track from original DB’s 3rd movie (which is also Kikuchi), then Yamamoto’s track (made 9 months earlier) steals the show.
“The only right opinion” 💀
japanese soundtrack perfection ! Other english version sounds so horrible !! How is it possible to change such perfect japan sound for those english shit
Yea the ENG version changes far too much to have any consistency.
I thought the faulconer was a joke at first and I am for real, what is this DnB music? 😅
(No hate)
The DnB part was better.
Discount VGM.
Yamamoto did this better
Yeah, Battle Point Unlimited is good
Yea even through the music is from the movie Avatar it’s still good
Kai's version kinda sucked
@@Jiterdomer yea to you not to everyone else
@@Jiterdomer No. With Yamamoto score, this scene is better. I didn’t say Z is worse than Kai, but Kai did an amazing job on this scene
Does anyone know where to find the ocean dub of this scene?
Doesn’t exist. Ocean stopped dubbing after Goku landed on Namek and only picked back up with Goku landing on earth after Trunks defeated Frieza (the episode where he shows off Instant Transmission for the first time) so this scene was never dubbed by them, unless there’s a flashback scene I’m forgetting about.
@@funkybunko Not even Westwood?
@@gespenst1329 nope, Westwood IS the Ocean dub I mentioned that picked back up with Goku landing on earth after Trunks defeated Frieza. Basically the team of FUNimation/Saban/Ocean did from Raditz to when Goku landed on Namek and the team of ABGroup/Westwood/Ocean did Goku landing back on earth to the end of Z.
The first one isn’t kikuchi it's yamamotos score which was copied
For some reason RUclips won’t let me pin it but I already addressed this in a comment.
Yamamoto score sounds like War from Avatar which doesn't fit in the scene.
It is, he plagiarized it.
In this senes, it's all from Yamamoto except for Bruce's music and Koichi's music from Kai
Faulconer
Faulconer is superior
Overall for the whole series yeah
Blind American fan
@TheGOAT-hj6sl uses the term bigoted for a white man defending a superior Asian dub.
IQ level of this person? 87 likely
@@TonyFontaine1988 Yea, dude has no idea what he's talking about, and should probably look in the mirror.
@@TonyFontaine1988 cringe lord weeb spotted.
The people who like faulconer more have no taste
Even in the face of a track made in similar style but with far higher quality.
Yamamoto is better for Kai not Kikuchi
Personally I like both in Kai
@@machineboyrecroomwell I don’t know why you like both but Kikuchi is only better in Z not Kai his music doesn’t even fit in Kai unlike Yamamoto’s that does
The Original, the English replacement and the Plagiarist
It’s the plagiarist in the “original” too lol
The acting in the English dub is bad. And the music isn't any better lol 🤣
Both are pretty good
Kai dub > sub
@@blur8163 Let me laugh harder
@@miadatenshi9903 Do whatever you want weeb i dont really care
@@blur8163 "Weeb" okay dubbie?
Gosh the english dub is terrible. Why do people still like that trash?
Correct. I stopped watching when FUNimation switched to their lame Texas voice cast. Ocean was the Best!💯
Selective memory.
Por que Americanos são preguiçoso s e não exigem uma qualidade decente para sua dublagem.
@@gespenst1329 When I got into db 2 years ago, I never really found the funimation dub to be what other would say. I found it awkward and Dialogue is Questionable. Now I know why.
Heeeey frieza! Aaaaaaa yaaaaaah!! Lol😅 sounds horrible
Faulconer is the worst
It changes far too much to be taken seriously.
Kai is super cheesey and lame.
Yamamoto score is better
He did this twice tho.
Yamamoto score is better
The first one is a Yamamoto score too :p
Yamamoto sounds like Zelda music
