When they bring the thing back from the other site and they're all looking at it on the table... It's one of the scariest things to ever show up on screen. No one even knows what to say it's so messed up. The slow pan over the mess of different forms is not something they've been able to capture with modern CGI.

One thing people understood back then but most seem to have forgotten: horror movies are about people, not monsters. The characters, dialog, even details like the way they dress, slang, etc. THIS is what makes a movie memorable.

Being fair, it’s not like there was any shortage of bad horror movies around the time the Thing came out, and there are plenty of good horror movies that come out today.
People talk like movies used to be better, but honestly, that’s not the case. There were tons of bad movies back in those days, but people just don’t remember them because, well…they were bad.

I think it’s a balance of both. You want a good monster but also characters you want to succeed(or fail if they are written to be unlikable). That’s what The Thing, The Blob, and The Fly all did well

For anyone on the fence about double dipping, the Universal 4K/UHD BD release is a fabulous upgrade. There's an obvious increase in fine detail, but where this new release really shines: the color grading is finally spot on, and the use of HDR puts it over the top. It's never looked more real/3D than in this release. The flares pop with realism. The flashlights in the infamous kennel scene make it feel like you're in the room with them. The blue runway lights on the snow at night. I was nervous that Universal might drop the ball on this one, but it's spectacular. I only wish they had included the OG 4.1 sound mix from the Shout release.

Anyone else notice how Windows has the same sunglasses that Matt Damon wore in Ford vs. Ferrari? Those are some sick shades

The man in the chair had blocked himself in that room because another team member was trying to kill him.
Paranoia and fear had its way at the camp.

And his throat had been sliced, but we also observe those bloody entrails coming from his wrist...... A detail that could have been dismissed as jus frozen blood in th cold.... But we th viewers know better..
I wonder if Mac and Doc caught that.

10/10. But Universal has...maybe had? an issue with the discs in the UK.
I got the special edition, and at 95 mins into the film, the picture broke and I got artefact blocking.
I was gutted because at the time the special edition had sold out. What I did was to get the normal one and swap the discs over and return the other as they are the same disc in every way :-)
The regular disc is fine and I was happy once more. However, I have now seen that I was not the only one. There are forums with people having the same issue. Most were the special editions and a few normal.
It might have been the first batch and the issue is sorted? But if you do get a UK one. Skip to 90 mins and watch to see if over the next 5 mins it happens to your disc.

The scene with dog entering the room seems peaceful, but weird. In the book adapted from the film that was on sale the same year had this scene turn out in a slightly more creepy way. The dog enters the room. A scuffle ensues. The door is slammed shut. Cut to next scene. In other words a violent take over.
