The truly scary aspect of "The Thing" isn't that the monster can be anyone... it's that there can be more than one. At one point in the film, there are three separate Things, and the ending leaves it ambiguous as to whether or not they got 'em all.

Also, if I recall, Carpenter said the game was canon, but I know that directors very frequently will take back "game canon" later on in their career.
The main arguments for Childs being the Thing is that he switches his clothes part way through the movie (meaning his clothes got torn) and that he drinks from the bottle of alcohol, which could've been contaminated. These are the two main indications of him POSSIBLY being the thing, but if the game is canon then Childs wasn't infected.

Since the thing is not embodied, and is rather amorphous in nature, it's view of self differs from a single self. Also as it goes on, you get a pretty terrifying view of how it doesn't even recognize human beings as intelligent/sentient.

I think that's lowkey the most terrifying part of this whole scene. The Thing has, up to this point, been an ambush predator. But that generator probably weighed at least a few thousand pounds. Yet the Thing just carried it off right before this scene when the power died. So the characters have to be wondering "how much more powerful than the other Things has the Blair Thing gotten?"

      @CrestedSaguaro520 Год назад +137

@@kibakim no, he had not been assimilated by the thing yet at that point. When Blair was destroying the communications, he was still human. The reason (or at least the supposed explanation why) he did that was to prevent the thing from assimilating any of the other people and calling for a rescue.
If it were able to call for a rescue team, it would have a huge opportunity to be taken back to a more populated area.
Remember the computer scene? Blair's computer says there is a 75% chance that one of the people at Outpost 31 is already infected. Then his computer says if the thing reaches civilization, it would assimilate all life on Earth within 27,000 hours (a little over 3 years).
Also, Blair not only destroyed the communications, but he also the helicopters to try and prevent it from escaping Outpost 31, where they were at.
Later in the movie, there's a scene where blair is being talked to and there's a noose in the tool shack he's locked in. He was ready to commit suicide (because earlier, Blair explained that the thing will not assimilate a dead person). However, before he had the chance to commit suicide, the thing got to him.
Then it dug the massive tunnel and tried to build a spaceship from helicopter parts to escape. But once it couldn't find any means of escape, remember: MacReady says now that the thing has assimilated Blair, it wants to freeze itself in the ice again and wait until a search party comes to find it again.
Hope that clears up the confusion about Blair. The Thing is difficult to understand only because of how intricate the details are.

I think it's him based off the fact he drank from the beer, if he was really worried about MacCready, he wouldn't do that. You could say at that point he'd given up and didn't care. But I think anyone would still rather freeze to death than be consumed by the Thing from the inside, no way he just drinks from that in that situation if he's human. And he seemed to calm overall for someone who supposedly doesn't know what's been going on. Also you piece together the other evidence, like the shot leading to where Child's was waiting, his back to a door where he could be attacked from, switched around coats in the room followed by ominous music when you see that he's gone. He claims to have seen blair but the blair thing was in the generator room at the moment he was walking out, not to mention it's totally out of character for childs to just walk out like that into the storm no matter what he saw, he'd been very cautious to that point. Remember when he genuinely thought it might be Mac, he was eager to just leave it outside while Palmer thing was eager to let Mac in and burn him. When they left Child's alone standing guard, it got him.
As to why it didn't go for Mac at the end, maybe it was happy to just freeze, I'd heard theorys that Mac was supposedly holding onto a weapon himself under his cloak so it was cautious to attack him, probably because Childs was the only piece of it left.

People here are surprised how intelligent the Thing is.
However, the Thing was never supposed to be a "mindless" thing. Let's not forget that this Thing had been assimilating various organisms before it had reached Antartica.
And when it assimilates and organism, it copies it fully. Not just in terms of its physical appearance. But it copies its memories and experiences. That's why the Thing knew how to talk, walk and blend in with other humans. It "remembered" relationships with other members of the station. It knew their names. Etc.
That is why the gasoline theory that people use to claim that Childs was a thing at the end of the movie, is bullsh*t.
Because the Thing would've smelled the gasoline before Childs lips touched the bottle of whiskey. And it would've known that:
    A) Gasoline is not what humans drink
    B) Mac Ready was trying to prove if it was a Thing by giving it something toxic to drink.
So if Childs was a thing and MacReady had given it gasoline to drink, the thing would've known it was all a trap. Which would've resulted with MacReady being killed on the spot.
So yeah, the Gasoline theory has been debunked. There's even a video here on RUclips that explains the same reason why that theory is bunk.

One particle of the “thing” is enough to take over an entire organism. My theory is MacCreedy was the first person infected because the dog had licked his J&B bottle when they first encountered it. Mac laughs when he hands the bottle to Childs because he knows that he’s just eliminated his last threat. Now he can go to sleep in the cold and wait for the rescue team.

    • @TatankaTaylor
      @TatankaTaylor Год назад +126

@@SJM6791 Well the way the Thing operates in assimilating with other organisms, shows that a more "physical" kind of contact is required for proper infection.
And I think that happens because a few particles of the Thing are just not able to do the job effectively. Especially if the organism that it wants to infect, has strong antibodies that would fight off such a small exposure of it.
So, yeah... if simple particles were enough to infect other organisms, then the Thing would've developed a way to spray a mist of itself. To infect others like a flu or COVID virus. It could even use air ducts or ventilation systems. And that would be enough. There would be no need to expose itself to potential harm by trying to violently take over a human. Just sneezing in a room full of them would be enough. According to the particle theory that you mentioned.
However, that's not how the Thing goes about infecting other organisms. It does that in a more physical manner. At least to be able to take it over within a few minutes.
I think with a few particles of the Thing, it would take a lot longer for it to successfully take over a body. But IMO infecting bodies that way is too risky because it allows the host to seek treatment. Like they would with a cold.

"The Thing" 1982 is a purely Lovecraftian horror about the fear of the unknown. We don't know where the Thing came from, what it is in general, and how evolution could create such a creature, and this is frightening. What I like about this film, in addition to the amazing practical effects and soundtrack of Ennio Morricone, is the atomosphere of despair and hopelessness, which is accompanied by fear and paranoia. To be in an isolated place with an aggressive dangerous life form that cannot be touched and defeated, and where everyone you know can be infected and the chances to survive are zero - this is the most terrifying thing...

Norris was the first to be assimilated. Palmer was second, followed by Bennings, then Blair, then Windows after he's attacked in the blood test scene, then Childs is assimilated by the Blair thing, then Garry is killed on screen by Blair and assimilated, then Nauls is killed and assimilated (there is concept art to prove it, they just ran out of budget and cut it) and is the last to be assimilated during the run time of the film.
At the end, Childs is the thing and Mac is still human. Childs is wearing different pants and a different coat (proof of this is the coat room, which is where Childs was located before disappearing, was arranged differently after Childs left. There was a blue coat hanging there, but upon seeing the room after Childs is gone, the extra blue coat is missing. He was consumed and imitated by the Blair thing and lost his original clothing).
Windows dropped the keys when he saw the Bennings thing (you can hear them hit the ground) and Palmer thing picked them up and sabotaged the blood. Fantastic movie. I love that we can still make theories about it this many years later.

An absolute all time great of a film. It scared me a lot as a kid, but kept going back to it. I also had the pleasure to watch this on the big screen recently, amazing!

Childs and Macready are both humans since they both have a glimmer in their eyes. The only reason why you can't see Child's glimmer is because his eyes are half-open but once he fully opens them, then you can see it.

The glimmer was only used in the palmer scene and pretty sure john debunked this still good theroy though

I watched this for the first time last night. The 4K blu ray was on sale on amazon. Beautifully shot film with top tier practical effects and a terrifying premise. I've been thinking about it since I watched it.

This is my favorite horror movie of all time. I've watched it countless number of times, and no matter how many times I've watched it, it still gives me the creeps. The SFX in this movie is just top notch!

someone said „The Thing“ is the best horror movie ever, not because of the gore, because of the consistent discomfort of everybody, the audience too! Nobody knows who The Thing is until the end in this isolated arctic station where nobody is able to escape.

One of my alltime favorite movies. The reason why I love it so much is the suspense and atmosphere but I've never understood why everyone is constantly praising the special effects. I actually never thought they looked that good. Some of them do, but I always thought some look pretty horrible. You can see from a mile that it's a bunch of plastic. Even back when I was a kid I thought some of the effects did not look that good. One of my personal favorite special effects is the intro flying disc. I think that one looks spectacular. I love the disk in the movie when actors are standing on top of it. I love some parts where the effects are used on a smaller scale like when that character is caught transforming and they burn him outside the station. I can't remember the name of the character. The effects I don't like are the ones on the big scale like this one or the one where that stuff cralws out of the stomach of that character they're trying to resesitate. One of the problems of using practical fx is the animation. Sometimes they'll look good but the animation will give it away.

I'm not a horror guy usually. And I'm someone who gets bored of movies quite fast. There aren't many movies where I'm 100% focusing on the movie the entire time and time flies by so far. The thing is one of the top movies where I never lose tension despite the fact that I've watched the movie like 20 times.

Can't be done. They would ruin it with that god-awful CGI, just like they did with the 2011 prequel.
