I took Ed's OME course. I now see nothing but weapons when I walk through Walmart. In all seriousness, it was one of the most enlightening seminars I ever attended. There were a few police officers, but not as many as there should have been. I use to be a CO and I had no idea what I would have never noticed until I took this course. I have every intention of taking it and any other courses Ed offers when he is near me.
Seems like a good course, I liked the technical drills. Also, I agree about karambits, I don't think they're bad or anything like that, but it is true that their way of use is not as intuitive as a regular knife. You can get prepared to be decent with any normal knife using basic drills, while karambits require a very specific understanding to actually be kinda good with them. Cheers, man!
Haven't really carried an edge for protection in years. When overseas in the 80's we used to carry screwdrivers, small knives, sharpened credit cards, cheap Bic ink pens........ Kenya, Tanzania, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Burma, Romania, Yugoslavia, Sicily, Spain, Mexico. Places like Chicago, Detroit, Flint, Indianapolis, San Francisco, L.A., Fresno, San Diego and my all time favorite OAKLAND
I'm a big fan of the small fixed blade in concert with grappling techniques. I carry a punch dagger when I can because I was a boxer for 10 years. So used in my left hand it is extremely familiar for me to use and to use up close or at a distance. That, or something like the fruit knife he talks about. You just need to be sure to have empty handed skills training and then learn to incorporate a blade into that. Knife fights are almost always very ugly and very up close. So learning how to work in that space is essential.
Digging into Craig Douglas @ Shivworks really got me thinking more about this & how my wife, kids, & I can integrate a knife & which knives into our BJJ, wrestling, & muay thai. My wife & I carry handguns so it would be silly to get into a knife duel, but are more likely to be attacked & while in contact range we can quickly deploy a knife & utilize it to end the fight, but primarily create space to more safely draw & use our firearms.
Ed is great unfortunately I missed the opportunity to get to one of his courses this year planning for next year currently finishing my training through ESI, with an extensive martial arts background including edged weapons and Krav Maga
Outstanding brother sounds like you will go far! Stay tuned my friend because I believe you have another opportunity at this upcoming Protector Symposium 5.0. Hope to train with you there
@@SirByronRodgers yea I’m in Washington state! Would love to get a chance at training together or possibly meeting up, I’m constantly looking to build my resume.
The risk of having your finger de-gloved is one of the reasons I parted ways with my karambit. Spar with a trainer, your index finger will take a massive beating.
I am familiar with breaking the finger or de-gloving, but really at full speed in a true life or death fight is it realistic, & would it even matter if someone is trying to kill you or rape you if you are a woman? Now when I refer to a karambit I am not talking about a big fantasy one, but rather a shorter blade that is as close to perpendicular to your fist as possible so you can punch with it & penetrate much like a punch dagger. The Bastinelli Kalinou is a modern representation of the original karambits & is a design I like a lot. Also if my wife has the karambit in her weak hand & an attacker is using both hands & their focus on disarming her (which is very hard to do in a real fight) she now likely has the ability to draw her handgun, as well as use BJJ & striking to more effectively.
If you are attacked with a knife from a close quarters' position you will get cut / stabbed, how many times before you disable the attacked would be the question. These symposiums and information that you put out are really good. I had to learn some of these things the hard way. Keep up the good work gentlemen.
Word of the wise carry a dagger preferably with full tang idc if its a kitchen knive or something fancy, i use to carry a folding stiletto and left my gun at home and got jumped by 3 guys and cracked on top of head with ahalf a brick ,there was no time to grab let alone fold out the blade till there were already running to car i learned the hard way , id take a sharpened screw driver any day with crdboard and tape sheef over a fancy folder cuz when it cracks off fast there no time to think and hopefuly u can grab and utilize you edge weapon before getting knocked out or over powered and out numbered
As a avid study of bladed weapons, 25 years of boxing experience and a qualified butcher. It makes me ecstatic to see people using a whole pig for training.
I can emphasize with you, I have a Filipino knife and stick fighting, and definitely Ed Calderon is a bad ass who brings you a different way on many things
Schools I've been too don't put enough money and time into trainers. It is all, "grab a trainer from the pile I just dropped onto the floor and pair up". Real life is not like that, even if you carry a knife. Learn how to draw before and during a conflict. Your best chance of survival may not be trying to reach for your knife after the attack has already started, you need to break distance before you get the time to draw and employ.
Someone skilled with a pew pew is going to put you down quick. Someone skilled with a knife is going to put you down relatively quick but it's gonna hurt the whole time it's happening and it's going to be hell.
Hey Byron! Just wondering what you think about the gun and knife defense in the Kalah System! I found them not to long ago but I think they're legit and useful. Check them out you might like their defenses too! Peace! The Aliening looking killing knife! LOL GOOD ONE!
Brother, You Roll Heavy, I Try to refrain from foul language, BUT !!! Watching This Video Made Me Exclaim. D;/;N . Thank you for you’re Videos. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOURS. Chris..
Karambits are awful for fighting knives, defense knives it's a pretty ok oh shit options like push dagger. And karambits aren't difficult blades to use but you don't do the fancy stuff with them
I'll bet you that if you tried to apply it, you would die. Try giving a practice knife to someone and let them do as they wish. Bet you die 9 out of 10 times at least. Especialy if it's by surprise. I know, having Had many real knife fights. I also have training. You have NO time to think. Try it, then drop the results. Make it as real as you can. The only real way is with real knives and protective clothing realy but just do your best. Either put lipstick on the practice knife and war black or use a high speed camera to count the wounds and asses the outcome. It would be fun and good to watch. Better to be trained than not trained. But over confidence well.... in a knife fight you WILL get cut. It's a matter of much and where
Yeah a knife is for defense against unarmed attackers, a bodyguard is for defense against anyone who is armed. Realistically, the only way to actually keep yourself alive is to be paranoid so you have time to see an attack coming and pull your gun.

I see nothing but weapons when I see a diner plate, a cup, a water bottle, a salt/pepper shaker, a chair, a garbage can, a book, etc.
What state, did you do corrections? Inmates can make some serious blades.

Ed's a great guy, cool first name too :)

Thanks for all your content and work!
I really wish I lived in the USA, we have absolutely nothing like this is the UK.
I'd really like to take one of Calderón's courses.
Mad respect to you and Ed 🔥
Definitely something I would like to do in the future

I enjoyed all five endings to this video.

Great Video!!
Yooo big thanks 🙏👊⚡️
proficiency with a blade is imperative , however the old cliché is also vary important to remember ... don’t bring a knife 🔪 to a gun fight ....
I can emphasize with you, I have a Filipino knife and stick fighting, and definitely Ed Calderon is a bad ass who brings you a different way on many things

Can the spoon do that tho? He swore by the butter knife pig stab.

People who have been shot 9 times have lived, people who have been punched once have died. There is no guarantee in a fight.
You said your Emerson did good. What model Emerson did you use?
Whats your weight if you don’t mind me asking
I wish my knives made those noises like in movies
Tanto Blade?
Love this content !!! Thank s for this episode!!
Ed should train correctional officers
He has
I was a C/O at a private facility. We trained with Felix Valencia in bladed weapons.
What was the context of grabbing the weapon hand in the clips? Was that being taught or was that the context of how someone may try to stop you?
Just some knife play giving a feel of controlling the knife or how it’s like on the other side

Wild Card
Great shit brother
Anyone with a flat brim cap should be like Odd Job from Gold Finger.
Lol this is what comes up when I search for Pioneer Woman knife test

6:49 Jesus you have a line up of heavy hitter. #pipehitter #realscarydudes🏴
How can I take his course ?
Now, how are you going to show that Tops I-Stick on the table and say NOTHING of it's performance, Byron?
This started off interesting Lol Ed is amazing!!! THIS got boring quickly tho 🤷♂️
That transfer of the blade was good. It could be great
Heresy! Karambits can cut through katana’s and broadswords!😊

There's nothing romantic about fighting with the blade short or long
Ed is a real badass!!!!!
Show don’t tell
Knife fights are cool, they arent choreographed and they arent pretty
Could u be in love with yourself any more🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
There’s a reason the Gurkha carry the khukuri. Just saying.
