notice how dislikes are actually disabled across social platforms these days? (youtube comments, videos still have them, twitter, tik tok, insta, etc. The funny thing is, Facebook does allow negative reactions, but facebook is mostly positive boomer stuff. Twitter does not allow for dislikes but is a toxic dumpster fire.) I think this is partially good, because otherwise people would be killing themselves over their dislikes. However, I think it's truly repugnant that the only you thing you can do these days on a lot of platforms is like. Actually I find the waste of time that is non-essential social platforming repugnant anyway, except for useful platforms. (for example linked-in is positive and has an actual function in your life that can better it in a meaningful way by providing it's users opportunities of employment)
Luke, I've heard you say stuff like "Videogames are a waste of time". But do you think you could elaborate a little more on a video? What about the arguably good aspects and pros of gaming? Maybe you could motivate me, and a lot of people, to drop playing vidya or at least reduce the time we spent playing.
@@LukeSmithxyz If I were to say, for example. That some video games have pretty a pretty good story, or that a certain game is "artistic", or that you learn and expand your "culture" by playing some select games. I think that could be the best advantages that I can think for playing video games.
I can see video games as being better than passive consumption of TV or movies. They are a semi-active media. I learned stuff from video games as a kid too. The issue is there are things (realer things) preferable to video games. Also, most people play video games as a time-killer because they have nothing else (hence self-identified "gamers"). I look back at my years doing this and regret it, because I see that I could've separated myself from video games and done more reading, learned woodwork, done X Y Z. My video game accomplishments are dust in the wind, but there are a lot of other passtimes that are not.
What if I'm building a brand and using social media for marketing? I hate social media, but it seems almost imperative for building an online buisness.
Honestly It's all about how you use platforms. And sites like reddit have a genuine reason for the upvote function, but I never took it seriously and honestly just care about the information. One can actually learn, especially about the psychology of specific people when analyzing such threads. Otherwise there are a simply a lot of platforms that aren't just global and "upcummy"-based at all. And honestly more often than not even on those sites, I really aren't of the same opinion as everyone else, nor do I try to enforce mine on others and that's just right tbh. I can argue and talk with very competent people from all over the world for however long I want, even on topics that might be specific to very niche groups of interest. It's not like 4Chan but I don't think it's wrong either. Rather the opposite, I tend to gain a lot from it.
reddit is a hivemind. I followed politically center/pro free speach subreddits, and got auto banned from the liberal ones. i have also seen peaple getting downvoted into the abyss, because they dont support the current thing.
so many people get drawn to social media way too much especially if it gets political, I see people who do nothing but debate communism and capitalism on twitter all the time... I myself should probably use it less much, but I do use it to keep contact with friends that live far away and shitposting, that's important. also I'd be drawn to 4chan a lot more if the site didn't look like complete ass same with reddit
I'm addicted to yt even that i don't watch shitty content and i dont upload videos and don't care about commenting stuff that much. Its very much a double edge sword to me i guess.
I didn't quite get your point about manipulation and 'priming your brain'. I mean, yes, stuff you see and hear will alter your perspective, but that's true not just for social media, it's about every media. If there's no agenda - there's no point in media. Please elaborate.

Twitter does not allow for dislikes but is a toxic dumpster fire.)
I think this is partially good, because otherwise people would be killing themselves over their dislikes.

>What about the arguably good aspects and pros of gaming?
Very confused by this portion.
What's wrong with IRC?
Outside of freenode, no one use it.

Thanks papa smith for the advice.

"This is the site culture on 4chan, and it's based"
correct.
By the way, Luke, does this mean we should dislike your videos and unsubscribe from now on? :thonk:
Downcummies and jealousy give me the same dopamine rush.

Sooo, but that means you are also part of the problem bc you (and I) use RUclips?
RUclips is sort of different since it's a one-way platform: I have 30K subs and don't know any of them. Still can be bad though.
I think people won't quit fb is the convince of a integrated chat. Here in Czech rep. half the people don't event watch the feeds, just chatting. :P
What if I'm building a brand and using social media for marketing? I hate social media, but it seems almost imperative for building an online buisness.
Imagine an IRC but with an upvote mechanism. OH iT hURtS TO THInK AboUT IT
Honestly It's all about how you use platforms.
Incredible. I knew reddit was left but I didn't realize I was being slowly manipulated to post post just for upvotes
reddit is a hivemind. I followed politically center/pro free speach subreddits, and got auto banned from the liberal ones.
i have also seen peaple getting downvoted into the abyss, because they dont support the current thing.
Varg is that you?
so many people get drawn to social media way too much
especially if it gets political, I see people who do nothing but debate communism and capitalism on twitter all the time...
I myself should probably use it less much, but I do use it to keep contact with friends that live far away
and shitposting, that's important.
also I'd be drawn to 4chan a lot more if the site didn't look like complete ass
same with reddit
Hey Luke it would be sick if you did a tutorial series on sc-im I would love to see how you use it.
Watching this video put me in a catatonic state
I'm addicted to yt even that i don't watch shitty content and i dont upload videos and don't care about commenting stuff that much. Its very much a double edge sword to me i guess.

What about the non-normie social media like telegram, mastadon or signal?
Just wondering... Have you read "Deep Work" by Cal Newport by any chance? What you say reminds me of what he wrote about social media.
Would you consider youtube a social media just if you are there to watch what people have to say?
I didn't quite get your point about manipulation and 'priming your brain'. I mean, yes, stuff you see and hear will alter your perspective, but that's true not just for social media, it's about every media. If there's no agenda - there's no point in media. Please elaborate.
This video is 3 years old?!
