RUclips is probably growing more and more afraid of everything that diverges from the party line. I knew a grindcore band that uploaded a video named "Fuck off I'm a Nazi punk" several years ago, pretty much to test the waters. The whole lyrics were exactly this repeating line over a minimalistic d-beat track and the video was something like a random J-Rock video laid over a clip from The Great Dictator; all in all, a blatant absurdist shitpost mocking Napalm Death and Dead Kennedys. For a year there was no reaction. Then came an email like "we're sorry, but your content may be kinda offensive for the audience, so we're removing it from general recommendations; you're still cool though, don't worry, the video stays". A year later came the next email like "you know what, our esteemed experts have decided your video, in fact, can be really perceived as offensive and we are shrinking it and putting it into a blender (or some restrictive action like that); you're still cool though, no hatin' anyone personally". A year later (when the band itself was already defunct), came the final email like "your video is totally, unapologetically and unashamedly fascist and racist and it's banned in 23 countries: Croatia, Azadistan etc etc... please enjoy your bans you bigots", so here's that.
@@Dizerfullpower another year later and people are talking aboht Pleroma again, 🙄 because of fears about _people getting unbanned, and some of the censorship going away._ Peak absurdity will be something to behold. I can hardly imagine another couple of years.

I agree with the federalization model but not with using it to sustain the dopamine-upboat technopsychosis inducing 'social media' format. ideally this would be used to create federalized niche forums, simplified web page hosting like geocities etc, bringing back the internet as an idea system instead of a hyperreal dopamine farm. the censorship issue is secondary to this. who gives a shit about freedom of speech on communication platforms if those platforms are still used to create dopamine-driven identity complex machines out of human beings?

The success of social media only shows how much people decide based on emotions. Yes, social networks are nicer to connect to people you know. But the old-school web forums were far superior for actual facts and discussion because they were practically free of spam thanks to moderators, filled with people sharing at least one common interest and more focused on content quality than endless scrolling, prefiltered feeds of shit. And most were run by a few dedicated people who just wanted to build a nice community, and not a multi-billion corporation that you can't effectively sue without tens of millions to spare.
Web forums have always been a terrible substitute for USENET and newsgroups which allowed users to collectively moderate content. After Google bought USENET it went downhill with the shift to a web interface.
Luke, thank you so much for this! I did not know about any of these things.

My solutions is to not bother with those networks at all. Still on RUclips, but am playing around with decentralized alternatives. Federation is the way to go, but it's going to take a long time before it catches on.
It’s not gonna catch on until it’s just an app, and the current social media is so draconian you get banned for saying something as innocuous as “McDonald’s/Microsoft/(TV Series)/politician X sucks.”

I still believe the way to fix social media is just to quit them. You made a good point on the upcummies video, this just feels like a step back: again, the problem with social media lies within the concept, not the implementation -- and if you care about censorship, then even in "federated" networks, people will just start censoring themselves
2021: Make the Internet Unmanageable Again (in the good way)

The final solution to the social media question
It's always the same problem: Nobody will switch whatsapp for telegram, signal or whatever. The same goes for RUclips/Vimeo and etc. The userbase is pleased with the normal, the standard. Nobody will stop using the standard ones to use 1001 alternatives out there.
My issue I had with new platforms is the fringe that mainly flocked to them and mainly only able to interact with them which over time drains and disenfranchises you. Perhaps now with all the people flocking they would all stand a better chance at retaining sane people. I ended up deleting most of my alternative stuff but the new blood might be what saves them. So hopeful. So much hype.
2:45 of course neckbeard.xyz is the best example lol

The Internet itself is already the greatest federated social network, each website/service is its own node
Until Amazon or Google or Microsoft refuse to host your website or service. ISPs have to start allowing people to host their own servers at home (or their cabin in the woods) without port blocking or other measures to stop in-home servers being accessible via the Internet.
@@0x007A Yep that's a really good point, the concept of ISPs is kinda messed up from the start
The fediverse is still web 2.0, it's a great concept and would've been nice if it had grown a few years back, now I think the alternative will be even more decentralised with p2p protocols, blockchains, IPFS, webtorrent, that sort of stuff, at this point the fediverse is a half measure.
I got about a minute into your silent slideshow before I noticed I was muted.
you speak out of my soul!
True, but too many of this networks have a bad landing page. When you go on RUclips you see all this videos, but when you go on many of this federated networks, you only see a wall of text about how awesome it is and you are confused.
Most of the centralized social networks allow you to consume it for free, but when you want to start to simp you need to login.
A while back I woke up from a dream where the word pleroma was imprinted in my mind... I also had a dream that predicted chainlinks price the next morning, around a time when I was trying to decide whether to invest or not
It is definitely better than Facebook. But one problem could be the following:
If this gets really popular, then big corporates are going to have their servers open to others (within the decentralized solutions), may be providing more "services", and people who does't understand anything are going to choose those servers to host their accounts. Again centralization will happen and those companies will still be in control of the social media.
I feel the need to mention Misskey as another federated Twitter-like social media. I run an instance.
Yeah, in addition to Neckbeard.xyz I also run Skipper's Bin. Misskey doesn't get enough love. Even by me; someone who runs their own Misskey instance.

Luke, Pleroma looks charming. Currently, it is only a bazillionth of the size of Facebook or Twitter. But I predict that will change. In fact, I'll put my money where my mouth is: I'll bet anyone $100 (US) that in 5 years Pleroma will be 1.5 bazillionths of the size of Facebook or Twitter. Seriously, "federated" social media has been tried several times now and has gone nowhere. I don't think it's ever going to be a viable challenger to the Big Boys.
Thanks for the video, very informative outside of the alternatives that are usually given.
I would agree that these platforms are better, but it doesn't fix my biggest issue with social media: the echo chamber effect. I could be wrong, you know far more about it than I do, but I would assume users still end up only seeing content that they want to see. That's great for audience retention, but I believe more people need to be exposed to well thought out content that disagrees with their beliefs. If every few posts there was content with a point of view that I respected, but challenged my beliefs, that would solve many, if not most issues I have with social media.
this is actually a super cool solution, as a weeb, i most check all of those
Reject modernity, embrace Christ!
@@chelonianegghead274 I'm starting to move this way.
Here in Brazil, for example, we're switching the standard post office services for one called Mercado Livre (a kind of amazon from Argentina). And that's only happening coz the post offices here sucks.
So, I'm aware of Mastodon, Misskey, Peertube and some other federated services for a while now.
And as far as I'm aware it's still susceptible to the networking effect, no? The biggest instance, or a consortium of the biggest few, will decide who gets to talk and who doesn't. It's just centralization with extra steps. Sadly.
Since no instance is forced to federate with each and every instance, meaning instance A can block instance B. So no messages from instance B will be shown in the global feed from instance A. I'm not sure if it goes beyond the global feed, e.g. making DMs from B to A impossible as well.
That's at least possible and documented in Mastodon, not exactly sure about others.
And, to be fair, it's a good feature to have. For example to block an instance that is used for spamming with bots.
But let's be realistic it also WILL be used to block opposing opinions. Which might end up fragmenting the network again, into a generally socially acceptable network à la Twitter, and a network of "undesireables" like gab.
I mean, that's exactly what happened after gab moved to using mastodon. It was blocked on pretty much every instance.
And further, most people will likely use the official server listing to find an instance to register with. And the official listing only lists servers adhering to the _Mastodon Server Covenant_, which basically allows to censor anything right-of-center, by having the main requirement being _"actively moderating against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia"_. And we know that these terms are more stretchable than a condom. "Don't ask people for their pronouns? That's transphobia, and if you instance does nothing against you, we will. Called someone a faggot? Better stop being homophobic or else ...."
Though, that all said. It still might be better than twitter. But maybe also not. I think it could be better, though it might also end up just as bad, or even worse.
Long and possibly incoherent rambling over.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
I know Mastodon, never heard about Pleroma. Thx, I'll check it out.
all of this is the right direction
wow just while following the thought of getting my own website I imagined something just like this. I mean I really don't use social media (exept yt I guess) because I don't need it. But if I needed it I would use federalized platform.

We stayed for the memes
Most of the pleroma instances I've discovered are full of weebs and Lain-wannabes.
There definitely are some technically neet ways around the problem of corporate censorship, but I'm sceptical of whether that is the direction we want to be pushing. This all comes across to me as someone 50 years ago instructing people on how they might grow their own tobacco.
Instead of finding equivalent ways of polluting our minds and fracturing society, it seems healthier to me to drop all those ways of scratching our social itches and instead make a move into local engagement and socialisation, both for ourselves and in promoting it. Things like going to church, engaging in local politics, in-person volunteering, etc.
I'm not saying computers are bad (for instance, I recall Luke talking about helping his local pastor with streaming their sermons or something). And as sources of learning and inspiration they can be a great tool. But to let them replace healthy socialisation is simply the wrong path.
Future is DECENTRALISED. Decentralised Finance, Decentralised Social Network, and so on. Future is for everyone!

I love that meme. btw commies saying "its a private company.." meme is referencing the performative outcry of conservatives because all they do is simp for capitalism and the one time it doesn't work in their favor they want it to be a fully nationalized utility.
That’s strange because most conservatives have never really been against regulation of things that control society. The conservative’s dislike for regulation is usually focused on improving the economy and trying to prevent bureaucracy.
My worry is that at this point the actual service providers will start throttling/blocking traffic from federalized services, so your own VPS or even home server will still not be enough
this is not what people complaining about twitter banning them want (one example) - they just want to have free reign to do what they like on twitter, etc.
Have it all sorted out, no friends no pain
There will never be enough people that switch for these alternatives to be viable
Panquake Is based on crypto also developed by Bill Binney ex NSA director so yeah
A revival of IRC and USENET is necessary to quash the behaviours of the social network services.
The only reason I'm on Facebook is because family members pressured me to open an account, so I set up an account with a false name. Maybe someday they'll be pressing me to join a decentralised social media platform.
No matter how much I would love to see theses technologies to emerge, (and making the evil advocate here) the centralized version also has its benefits. Let's take an extreme case, what happened when some of your data goes viral for weeks. Will you pay for a better network, a better server, or having access to a replication server. Even if some solutions exists in the distributed model to reduce the impact, at some point the system fall appart, in particular when you can't predict the data flows.
