How Accurate is Elite vs NASA Footage?

- We spent two months researching and shooting side by side comparisons of Saturn in game vs Saturn in real life.
It took some effort in getting the right angles but in the end we were very happy and surprised by the results.

Yeah, and I still dont have the Sol permit :)
Its just going to be another ship
@@AlxBrb well you have to earn it
Channel is massively underrated. I don't even play Elite, but this is quite insightful
Thanks so much for watching XD
And play Elite. :D
Play it dude. Is obsessing. You will love it. Is endless.
How dare you!! Love you too. Thanks for watching pal. We’ll get back to it as soon as all these people get the hell out of my house!!
@@GhostGiraffe lol who is in your house
Very creative idea. Your channel never ceases to entertain, can't wait for the next space tourism video too. 👍
Thank you soo much!
Awesome video, and we'll researched! I really hope they add some of these in game, seeing the waves in the rings up close would be amazing!
Lol, I love how excited you sound in your explanations! Big Elite player here, awesome video man. Thanks for sharing. :)
Thank you very much! :)
Oh oh another Masterpiece.
Now I need to buy a ticket traveling to the ring, so i can manage to see it for myself.
It’s a fun ride:)
You better pack a lot of in-flight meals lol.
manrightchea I guess the free flight meals on Federal airlines are pretty disturbing eh bud
Ghost Giraffe Been in Fusang for too long, start to miss our old solar now
Play star citizen
TIL they actually flew the probe through the rings!
Yep several times! Then they crashed it into Saturn when they were finished
As you do.
@@jpHasABadHandle Saturn devs must have been furiously patching bugs at the last minute
@@GhostGiraffe Are the rings really that dense / thin?
Yeah much of it is dust and it can be as thin as a few meters
I love this channel so much! Just the right amount of humour and education. It's a shame how underrated this channel is. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Help us get the word out and share where ever you want :)
Thanks for the nice comment =D
Awesome video. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Glad you enjoyed this and thanks for taking out the time to comment! We really appreciate that:)
I love how accurate Elite is.
Saturn has always been my favourite Planet in our System. It is just so perfectly beautiful.
Well done GG this is brilliant! Let's hope David and team are inspired by it to consider how some of these things might be represented in game in future. Always love your stuff.
Thanks pal!
Your channel rocks I’m so glad you posted
You rock as well Joshua! Thanks for watching =D
This video is flipping brilliant.
Really really brilliant. I floopin' love this! :)
Nice work, CMDR o7
Thank you so much and thanks for sharing on Twitter. That really helps :)
@@GhostGiraffe o7 :)
Damn.. I need to come back to this game again!
The space footage and pictures were so cool to see! :D
Thanks sooo much!
Impressive content. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much will do!
Some transitions blew my mind. Great job.
wow this is massive! Great content man! Congrats this is the best ED channel right next to Obsidians!!
Wow thanks for the great compliment
Thank you for making videos again
No problem! Always a pleasure seeing people like you enjoying them!
@@GhostGiraffe Can we expect more space tourism? Also I have an Idea: (you don't need to do this) but the mamba sorta resembles the Christine killer Plymouth. Maybe a space tourism with a horror twist. Make the nameplate say Christine and the designation code be the CQB-241 liscence plate number. I dunno. Just wanted to share my idea.
That is a great idea haha. We will keep it in mind.
You legit have the best ED/sciency videos. Plus your funny. Big fan always will be.
Thanks a bunch! That’s really great to hear. On top of making something educational we want to be entertaining:)
Love the way you integrated the Cassini images with the in-game video!
Beautiful video! It's awesome that you guys took the time to make this!
Thanks! It was pretty fun to put together :)
The Dune music at the end is perfect.
Yeah. What is it?
@@DavidDavid-zc1tw It's from the Dune soundtrack by Toto. I believe the song is just called "Main Title".
Outstanding presentation (as usual). Now, if we can just get real probe footage of the Thargon home world :P .
Enjoyed that. Nice work. :)
Thanks! We really enjoyed your Raxxla video. Was cool to see all that Elite memorabilia and old lore.
Cool video.
The majesty of space never ceases to inspire.
Amazing Ghost Giraffe.... well done. 👏👏
Thank you very much!
_just beautiful_
:) thank you
Another top vid every time I watch your channel I feel the need to jump in my Asp and get there and explore, thank you.
Ha! Glad to hear it!
This is actually awesome, more of these please!
Working on it!
Cool video GG ! Amazing to see how close to reality Saturn is in-game.
Yeah it was pretty surprising how faithful they were to each segement
It would love to see different places in our solar system compared to the game
This is super cool. We need more videos on elite vs real life comparisons.
What I’ve always wondered is when you look at areas in elite that are based on star catalog data (where you see tubes of high density star patches) the density is WAY higher than the surrounding area. So wouldn’t that mean elites start density is much much much lower than the actual galaxy? And if it’s that much lower on the outer sectors of the galaxy I can only imagine what it’s like at the center.
That’s a great idea! I remember a developer said that the core isn’t as dense as in real life because their systems wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Wow. Thanks for putting in the work
Thanks for watching! It’s always a good feeling seeing a comment from you :)
I’m nothing special, but it’s nice to see your work getting noticed
Absolutely stunning, thank you very much!
Thanks for the nice comment :)
Awesome that you keep reinventing yourselves!
Our favorite Cat! Thanks! Gotta keep it fresh you know!
Excellent as Always.
Mentioned on this week's Lave Radio.
That’s awesome! Thanks for letting us know
Amazing content. I love it when I can check out ED and learn something new! You are the best Mars!
Ohh thanks Dj! Always happy to hear you liked another video of ours
Awesome video! I love comparisons like this, and I'm especially fond of shepherd moons.
Yeah they are so interesting because they are always changing
Very cool, CMDR! Thanks for more great content!
o7
Thank you very much again! Glad you enjoyed it
Awsome video!!!! Please bring back the series with mars!!!
Mars is ingame terraformed
@@cmdrgrantour3342 yes but i want more of that
He means our character Mars. We have another series called Space Tourism with Spawrks and Mars Yurip ;)
We are working with someone on terra formed Mars who processes photos for NASA. That will fun to compare to Elites terra formed Mars
Excellent as usual, more please
Thanks Ghost. Elite player here with 55 weeks of gameplay. Always enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work and yes..we want to see more stuff like this. :)
Great! Happy to make these sorts of videos
This was actually pretty cool.
Thanks we appreciate that!
You really need to upload more your videos are ace
Holy sh...eep this was mind blowing for me, and intensifies my longing of wanting to have my own ship and go off and really see it all, if only eh? Which is why I love Elite sure it’s not completely accurate and may not ever be, but it’s nice to have a good idea of how things may be and look out there, what did it for me was the back of Saturn in this video, lit up green, the fly by of the rings made me think of snow that has been driven over on a road at night, I’m 25 and since I was little I’ve always been fascinated with space and the things out there, and it’s content like this that makes me feel that bit closer to it all and increases my love for it since I won’t be able to see it first hand, until your next one o7.
Thanks Superduck! IT's a fantastic game and yeah even though not everything is spot on it's still the best chance I have to actually exploring the galaxy =D
Hope to see ya out there!
Ghost Giraffe that’s exactly what Elite is for me my best chance of seeing everything as I’m sure it is for all of us who play!
Thanks! I enjoyed the show
You’re very much welcome! We’re glad you did!
"Big pilons of materials being thrown up"
That's just me deep core mining for void opals, nothing to see here.
I haven't played this game long, but it seems like having a 1 to 1 Sol system would be a huge draw for content creators, science educators, and -by extension- more players.
What's keeping them from adding all the public data from NASA and other agencies to add things like the gas giant moons? Or is it that the time setting those bodies no longer exist?
It's really great! Yeah We wonder where the other planetoids and moons are too. Having said that, there are more in game now than when it was released so perhaps its just a procedural thing.
Nice job and great on the video you deserve credit man, just a heads up man when you make a next video about something like this you gotta remember this game may have real physics and planets in real life but it’s a different year in game things probably changed over time in the game over years just think of the game from a different universe like how everything lived on in there time how they have everything but over 13 thousands of years as humans got advanced so did planets and statures over time how some were faded away and how some planets got reborn. We are in the year 2019 but in that year it’s 3305 and that’s a long time for them, you have to think real physicals in this game and how many years it changed over time. Like Mars for example like how it got terraformed in game because over the years there time went on.
What if the update in 2020 has a lighting redux?!?!? That would be amazing!
That would be fantastic
Great idea for this video! LOVE IT!
great video!
great comment!
Wow. What a sick video!
Awesome video! For me Elite was always about the science.
It’s a special game in that regard:)
For real, never knew Jack Black liked Elite. Cool video!
Such a professional narrative;)
nice work!
This game is so much fun i love it
Brain May's perm is pretty amazing.
Would love to see that History Rap Deul
I was hoping they put Saturns hexagon shaped storm at its North Pole. I just downloaded the game today and I’m going there first.
Thx for sharing! 🖖🏼👽
Wow, very interresting stuff, I wish there was really a Goddart space combat center ( 4:29 ) that would be epic.
Ha! Well they would be more of the Cannon research type center.
It's (obviously) unclear how accurate it is and on what exactly they're applying it but it should be noted that Stellar Forge generates a simulated galaxy in the year 3305 and not 2019 (or probably a few years back for the majority of it). This can affect colors, saturation or maybe even the rings depending on what they expected them to do during that time.
Too bad we don't have the very small moons, even the smallest ones are still fairly big. I'd assume they would maybe come with comets which would be able to maybe generate bodies of that size.
I can't tell you how much I love this video!
I can’t tell you how much I love this comment!
Brilliant video
Thank you so much again!
@@GhostGiraffe a pleasure, you make really interesting content. Please keep it coming.
I guess once ray tracing will be available in Elite , it might look even more realistic..
nice video, very interesting!
happy to share =D
Wait you got interviews from NASA? How do you guys just have 42k subs this is informative and entertaining!
Ha yeah one of us lives right next to Goddard and they have been very willing to help out with educational stuff.:) thanks so much for the kind comment! Feel free to share the video wherever
I love what you do.
Thank you soo much
Actually surprised how good Elite Dangerous looks compared to the real thing, I mean it is just a game.
True
This is so cool!
thanks! You're pretty cool too

0:30 Say...that's a nice Space Limmo! 🥰
Pretty sure it's a physical impossibility for GG to make a bad video!
This also really makes me want to get back into elite. Haven't played since getting my new video card....definitely need to get back in there and turn all the graphics up to 11....see all the little details I was probably missing out on before!
Thanks so much pal! Yeah also they have thrown in a lot of new sounds to small things like menus and atmospheric
I love this! But I gotta say this is pretty much why we don't have atmospheric landings yet, and we may not get to land on Earth for another 5-10 years after that. Elite fans will pick it apart to the very last detail.
"We are now flying above Manhattan Island.. let's compare in-game footage to NASA's geological projections for the year 3305..." XD
I don't doubt that haha
I love when shit becomes science shit
If I recall correctly Elite Dangerous has based a lot of the generation on information from 2013, hence why some of the later discovered stars are missing. I do not know whether this information was available at the time, but if it was then that is a shame. Although Elite does pack a lot of pretty sights, knowing it could have been vastly improved if mirroring real life is a bit of a downer :(
Conor Nixon has the coolest Northern-Ireland-crashes-into-US accent ever.
He’s got a cool twitter feed too :) tell him we say hi!
I subscribed because I want to see more stuff.
You got it dude!
Very cool video.
Thank you!
For some reason, notifications weren't turned on.
Fixed that!
Wooo hoo glad you saw it :)
So I literally read about Cassini's journey (and that of the Huygens probe) yesterday just because I was reading some philosophical text that used Galileo as example...
Coincidence doesn't exist...
Haha we also made a Huygens video but needs more work:)
@@GhostGiraffe Nice, looking forward to that!
next, china's dark side of the moon data/images vs elite's version...
That’s a great idea. We have been wanting to make a video using NASAs LRO satellite which has mapped out the surface of the Moon. But it’d be interestingly see what China has seen too
great job
Great comment ;)
Amazing :)
The Music in the end, isnt that the soundtrack from "Dune"? Edit: No, i had to listen to it, it was kinda close. but not from Dune. :-)
No it’s very close though
Incredible
Has anyone tried to find the Voyager?
People should really get on this and see if they hid it in the game.
Yes we were the ones who found them too! We have a video for each one if you want to check them out. :)
Nice video. But I wonder how time plays between NASA of today and elite 3303
Good question. I imagine lots would change in the rings from now till then
Holy Shit
MOAR!!
Woooooot!
Stop getting me all excited to play Elite. Stop it. Stop....okay, I am logging on.
Ha
You glorious beautiful bastards! Awesome video!
Aw shucks! Thanks XD

lol thanks YT also check out our science videos we did with NASA those may be kind of cool ;)

Love you! Thanks;)
0:50, would that mean in certain situations the sunset and sunrise on Saturn would have a green tinge to it?! :0
Don’t know for sure but that would be pretty cool
Carrie Anderson could double for Drew Barrymore!
