Now I know this is a fan film and I can see how much effort you guys have put into this BUT I do have plenty of constructive criticism if you'll here it. Now I'm a perfectionist when it comes to the arts but it's only because I care for the arts and always want to make the best product. With that being said this will go into some HEAVY detail because of my perfectionism. BUT trust me when I say i DO NOT expect you to do all of this first try. This is a learning experience and that's how you end up making something award winning in the future.
    1. I think you guys NEED to pick what kind of camera you want and stick to it, only sprinkling other camera angels at key moments. When you are jumping from a Third person to a First person to what I think was a mounted camera it can be hard to follow the story. Hell integrate the camera angles into the story. Think to yourself: as the audience where would they be following this story. Only from the ODSTs perspective? Only from the Insurrectionist perspective? Or the split view? Or do we want to do a fake out where we were following one side and the other side story gets told later? Anything but going from every camera type and GET CREATIVE with those camera angles!
    2. I am interested to here why there is no color grading. Color grading is going to be essential in selling the tone of the film. Look at the ODST trailers from Bungie, both live action and 3D animated they have close to the same color tone. That Greyness with a bit of color really sells the tone of sadness and misery.
    3. The actors NEED NEED NEED to step it up. I was taken out every time they delivered their lines. Now I myself am an actor and I get it. Memorizing lines and selling that you are this character is stupid difficult especially in the beginning of ones career. I KNOW THEY CAN DO IT THOUGH, its just bringing a bit more emotion, emotional undertones, and making the dialogue more natural. This ODST team in terms of story seemed like they were just put together and this is their first mission with each other due to the acting. At the beginning they didn't feel like they were moving as a unit, more like moving because they were told to. I think if you look into they way actual soldiers move in a unit you'll see what I mean. A soldier should NEVER have their gun down in enemy territory, in Close Quarters each soldier checks every corner unless they are designated to check specifics ones when clearing a room (Ex: 2:57 only the first ODST looks to his right and none of the other ones do. Every ODST should have looked that way to clear that corner because at ANY point some one could come that way if it's a door or hallway. Even if it's just a corner they should be clearing it). Now if the point in the story was that these ODSTs are just getting to know each other then the actors need to act accordingly and that needs to be established.
    4. The dialogue as written seems a bit rough and choppy as well. When the ODST jokes about the guy "pissing his pants" there needed to be bounce back from another member of the team. The joke fell completely flat because there was no prior set up for something like a bet and there was no pay off from another character laughing or getting in on the bet. This goes the same for the Insurrection soldiers. When the one is handed the canteen of unknown liquid I like the cough he does but when he just says he is going to "Turn in" it felt disconnected and moving too fast. Maybe he should have made a joke about how "That shit was so strong I think IT WILL knock me out (Referencing the sleeping they were just talking about). Damn, I'm gonna turn in *Walks away continuing to cough*"
    5. I am sure it was difficult on you guys to record audio and I am not surprised by that due to audio being a pain in general. Music was perfect in terms of volume but the ODSTs and other soldiers audio need to be either cleaned up or ADR in order to get that sense of realness. They seemed like they were recorded on set with a Blue Snowball or something equivalent due to the voices sounding too sharp, like the mic quality was picking up all sound and their voices reverberate off of what are clearly walls. There are also ways of covering up some rough parts with things like static microphone sounds.
    6. I could get into things like the graphics/text and how they should be less Future Sci-Fi and more Military Sci-fi. Halo does have a VERY specific esthetic when it comes to those things. But at this point that is just nit picking.
Now with ALL of that said I am still insanely proud of you guys for making it this far because I know how difficult getting all this done is. Just doing this shows more passion and care than the Halo show could ever strive for. Love the costume and set design!
If I can help in anyway I would hop on the project in a heartbeat. I am doing an Audio Series called Spartan Stories here on RUclips and I do EVERYTHING for that project. Writing, sound editing, video editing, Voice acting, Marketing, all of it. I have experience in Studio One, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, DaVinci Resolve, and plenty of practical skills as well. Let me know if I can do anything for you guys!

      Director here.
Thanks for the feedback, I did the editing, camera work, and directing. This was all shot on the FX3, and is in fact my first short, and second video I’ve ever made. We have lined a great group of people for the big deal as this is simply a pilot.
As far as color grading goes, I personally feel most low budget sci-fis hide behind color grading. I personally enjoy the compiler colors of older films or new films that are emulating old films. That being said I’m not a colorist and we going to have a colorist for the bigger film
Most of our issues here come down to budget, and training. We are budgeting for acting classes, as no one in the pilot is an actor we have mostly learned everything when we started this project aside from the prop department.
Hope some of this makes sense
We will take some of your feedback into the big film, some of it we are absolutely aware of and will do a Q&A
Also this has been completely funded out of pocket from camera gear to props

@@JwallsmediaI think the most impressive thing so far is that you actually put all this together which is no easy feat.
With a decent amount of practice the acting can be excellent. Remember that the characters are human beings and so they should respond to each other fluidly. A bit of improve might go a long way into developing the actors abilities and natural dynamics. As far as military tactics go, well everything you need to know is right here on RUclips so have a look for some good videos on CQB and general infantry tactics and try to implement these concepts into the way the characters move. That also goes for the various opfor that will be encountered. Dumb enemies do not a engender a sense of danger and high stakes, as a dynamic entry like we see depicted would bring about. Remember again all the characters are human beings, the have all their senses, they have emotions, adrenaline will be high in this situation so try to bring that into the front.
All and all great effort, can’t wait to see how it develops.

im sure others have already offered their criticism so i'll try and stick to a few positives I had. I LOVED the props, ESPECIALLY the weird CE door-opener device. The ODST suits, weapons, and gear all look like they might have dropped out of Halo: Landfall. And the music? I was NOT expecting to get with it, but I was surprised. Really big props to Grant and Caleb!!!
ALSO really big thanks to Anthony Moore, who I can only assume thought of the idea to interject a teaser into popular Halo creators' social posts. Such a weird 4th wall breaking idea, but it INSTANTLY got me interested in the project. With a higher budget and some strong actors, this could be a well deserved addition to Halo's live action projects.

Always check both corners on the breach, and a little more violence of action from the soldiers moving through and clearing. Something I learned is that if a Spec Ops team has history, they can move through with minimal speech. If you let their moments and actions speak, with subtle words here and there, that could really help to establish them as a hardened spec ops team with a background working together. Othewrwise, I absolutely loved this guys, seriously wtf BRAVO !!! For reference I’d look at the show Seal Team/the movie 13Hours (tactics and movement) and the movie Heat (specifically the shootout scene) Again, just some constructive criticism bc I absolutely loved this and wanna see it flourish, y’all are killing it!

Something I'll caveat off of this, dispersion across a river fording site needs to be bigger (have more distance between individuals), as well as target discretion, yes in theory these personnel at this area are hostile, but the woman w/ a wrench was a no shoot scenario, and for the ODST's they may be the SF dudes of the UNSC but they're still trained/taught wrong from right. As well as clearing corners in every room, not just the breach. This was good though! Some extra training for the men and women wearing the suits w/ firearms and some basic fundamentals/tactics would go a long way!

Even in the rim of the galaxy, this outer haven, hell jumpers must abide. Oni one power to rule all, Oni one sovereign, only one cabal.
Seriously though. This was a real treat. Small budget or not, you can see a real consideration and passion for less explored parts of the Halo franchise here.
No pushed agenda, no appeal to a broader audience, or self inserted (almost fan-fiction like) material we saw in the Halo show. A show might I add, with a ten million dollar episode budget, and backing by a century old production company. Inspirational ma dudes and dudettes!
I tip my hat to y’all.

Great job on the Pilot! It’s an impressive feat to make this and there are so many things to say. I have some thoughts to share:
1: The costume work is amazing! I saw the promotional material on your TikTok a while back and was blown away with how good it was. Great job with the non-ODST characters as well.
2: I love the camera work! I feel like there are some shots that go on a bit too long, like crossing the creek, especially when we haven’t gotten to know the characters yet. But the mix between first person and traditional shots is handled very well.
3: Scripting something like this is hard; and I feel like the story didn’t do a good job introducing us to the ODSTs that we will presumably be following. The first lines that a character speaks should tell you everything about them, and I feel like I know more about Reg and the security guard than our protagonists. Then again, this could be the “cold open” before we fully meet the characters, so forgive me if that’s the case.
4: Acting. This is the hardest part to critique, especially as a fan production. I just couldn’t buy Buford’s monologue as he spoke into the camera, and that has to do with movement. He sways too much and it distracts from the scene.
That’s not to say I didn’t like it, because I loved it! I can tell how much effort and love was put into this project. I can tell how the director care about every shot they put on screen. I can see the care put into all 9 of the costumes, even if they appear for less than a second. I can see a group of friends writing a script and making that dream come true. Coming together and filming it, memorizing lines and performing on the day. Your team has a bright future, I’m so excited for the next video! Congratulations, November Black Productions, you did it.

Tip for his acting. He needs to find real emotion for it. He needs to move his eye brows. Have him frown. Have him spit the words out. Not just yell.
In other words, this is an emotionally charged monologue He has and he needs to grab ahold of that emotion better.

I had some issues with the movement and muzzle direction. If you want to add more realism then try not to let muzzles cross teammates. The breach effect could be better, but understandable for the budget. The props are pretty good. You can also tell they're kinda mindlessly sweeping on that breach and that movement. Going forward you can say it's one of their first missions together. You can already tell they're green.
Recommendations going forward: Take that team airsofting a few times at a cqb field. The two ways of playing are speed and stealth. They're lacking in both. Hand signals when understood at a cqb field are great due to the other team frequently being in hearing range. If they get taught that, then it's just watching angles and moving fast when it's time to move.
For the marches outdoors, typically you just look with your head and eyes, keeping your weapon lowered. If you get shot at, weapon snaps up into firing position. If you see a potential baddie in the distance, anyone with a scope or any magnified optics checks it out. In the case of this team, it's the trooper with the sharpshooter optical package. They wouldn't respon instantly. Maybe a couple seconds of looking before saying if it is or isn't, or if their optics aren't good enough to tell at that range.
In general that team moves like there's no weight to what's going on. No stakes. Which isn't really how the best fighters do it. The best fighters are cautious, exact, and professional. They have a general idea of when they're safe or not, and know when it's time to get fast and violent.
Since this is the start, and you've invested in the props, and everything I've mentioned is learned behavior. You have a lot of room for improvement. But it's so doable that I'll be sticking around to see it

This is amazing. Undoubtedly lots of effort put in, and miles better than the show we received. My only feedback would be to put a pedal floored to the acting. There's a lot of awkward tones. Or the anti-UNSC rebel on camera. Really get into a gritty character and feel the hatred. I feel like it'd be a fun practice for you guys to see how far and realistic you can take it to accompany swell emotion in the films. Make some spoofers in another video showing silly moments. Get the dialogue across a little smoother, too. Pure focus and confidence.
Other than that, I mean it's such a good production, I'm definitely coming back for more, and thank you guys so much for coming together to create something awesome and fun for us!!

Little advice, when breaching you have to scan both sides first and keep moving around the room but close to the wall, that way your team can spread and clear the room, the first 2 have to check left and right, the other two have to follow the first two while swiping the room

Amazing work. If I might make 1 small critique, just a small detail I noticed that might make the ODSTs feel just that tiny bit more professional, I noticed they were flagging their squad mates an awful lot during this (if you don't know flagging is when you point a gun at someone you don't intend to shoot, loaded or not) for example when they were crossing the stream in the beginning all but the last man in line had their guns pointed forwards, meaning they were pointing at the person in front of them. To avoid flagging I'd suggest having the point man's weapon trained forwards with everyone behind him (except for the last man in the column) pointing their weapons to the right and left flanks (ideally alternating with each person watching the opposite direction of the person in front of them) and then having the man at the rear watching out behind them.
Other than that this looks amazing👍

Super cool. This is what I think the community has been waiting on. Im super impressed. The dialog, the movements, the camera shots, costumes, the narrative. The bullet effects were dope as hell. B+
If you guys wanted some kind of tangible feed back read more please.
The lighting was either perfect or too bright. Like the insurrectionist in the beginning were under total flood light; and perhaps dimmer lights resembling moon light, a static orange light, and then the camp fire light would have set the mood of infiltration under darkness more. Like the shot of the ODSTs coming into the compound around the corner just after taking the insurrectionist out, that shot was sick as hell and them appearing out of no where shows their tactical prowess. But it was again bright. And then the music is so right for ODSTs but I think this scene would have done better with some more a slow and methodical riff that built up to a crescendo of the breach. I think Sicario (2015) Night Approach scene has some elements of what I've critiqued here. Solid work you guys, this is gonna be big.

Great Costumes and great movement for the scenes. Good handsignals and tactics work for the ODST's I love it when people actually know how tactics work and implement them into their content. I love it! The only gripe I have is the modern weapons are a bit of a killer. I especially hated it in the Halo TV Show, but understandable on your part. What looked like MP5 turned into a Halo Grenade launcher on the ODST's back was a bit of an eye catcher, due to the empty magwell. I would put something over it (Black self adhesive camo tape?) to break up the outline/silhouette of the OG MP5 lower receiver and Magwell a bit. Or heck, Dremel out the sides, and add a couple illuminated buttons for aesthetics. Just throwing ideas out there! Like I said though, I love it! And can't wait to see how this turns out. Good luck on the rest on your experience!

I love the outfits and the props, the sharkface on the assault rifle added some cool bits of character personalization. Im excited to see if there's more fun details like that. The audio could use some polish but this is a good start and I'm excited to see what you all have created! Also if you guys are planning on filming like a second season and are in need of more bodies for filming, I've got a odst outfit that could make for a sort of insurrectionist. I would be happy to help, depending on where and when you guys would be filming.

I have an ODST helmet on my 3D printer as we speak, but this short reminded me why I got into cosplay in the first place. One day I hope to have an ODST kit that would be screen worthy for stuff like this, and enough homies that want to do the same.

Awesome job. I like how hard you went on the morality issues of the UNSC. That wall poster you tried to focus on after the ODSTs ran past it was a nice touch but the camera didn't linger on it long enough to read even a little of it. Overall quality was really high though.

Practical effects, lighting, atmosphere and props all are very good. Around 1:13 it would be better if they had light discipline since they're conducting night infiltration. I would recommend looking up military doctrine publications in regards to patrolling and room clearing so that way the actors playing the ODST's can really sell it that they are in fact special forces. Looking forward to more of this coming out.

This looks fantastic! Always wanted a series focused on ODSTs dealing with Insurgents. (Only question is whether we'll see/hear about the Covenant)
Little nitpick though, some of the voice acting sounded a tad robotic. Could probably do with some extra work. Other than that, this was perfect for a pilot episode, can't wait to see more.

I absolutely love this! The costumes are fantastic but why wouldn't they be, I've seen the dedication you've put into them over on Twitter.
One piece of criticism is that the dialogue for the rebel facing the camera felt like it could've had more energy in it. What he was saying was perfect but how he was saying it felt kind of weak?
I love the details of the gunshots, were those practical effects?

    • @phenthic7566
      @phenthic7566 8 месяцев назад +1

Yes, the gunshots were practical effects. We are aware of the weak points you mentioned however, we greatly appreciate the criticism . It will help with our QC going forward. Thank you for supporting and watching it though. We really wanted to give something cool to the Halo community.

  • @SilasTheLoser
    @SilasTheLoser 8 месяцев назад +8

This looks sick so far, I only really have two criticisms which are that the acting needs a lil bit of work in some places and as someone else pointed out the audio is a bit too clear, other than that the props and story y’all are setting up seems cool as hell!

    • @Rusa_Azavayl
      @Rusa_Azavayl 8 месяцев назад

Since it’s already been touched upon by you and someone else I’ll add my last bit of constructive criticism, the stacking, breaching and room clearing was superb but it would’ve been nice to have seen the lcd screen on the door opener for more depth and my only other nitpicks would be seeing an MP9 in 2552 in one of the URF soldiers hands and the bit with the comms unit on one of the ODSTs helmets being used seemed a tab bit awkward. Apart from that this is a true halo TV series and what 343 should’ve given us long ago. I can see just how much work has gone into making those suits and it seems to really show

I’d suggest color grading and filters with the cinematography, it’ll help with the realism of the costumes, props, and unite everything a little more visually. Not drastic changes but just subtle color grading :) can’t wait for more
