I think that you are absolutely correct in your assessment of Greg’s. I often use them for breakfast, wouldn’t consider buying lunch there but they provide a cheap and cheerful, convenient service without fuss, you can grab a fast solution to eating something on the way to the office (hoover out the car at the weekends) simples! It is what it is and fulfills it’s rôle adequately. Beyond that there is little more that can be said or even needs to be said for that matter. Good review and I look forward to the next one

Where I grew up in Manchester in the early 1980's we were close to one of the actual bakeries in Clayton, wherever the actual industrial bakeries were you would always find a clearance shop that sold product that had been baked the day before or had slight issues like smudged icing on the vanilla slices. Everything was 1/3rd the price of the normal shops. Every family in the area used that shop, it was the cheapest place to buy bread and family treats that might not have been affordable for many otherwise. A Greggs sausage roll with a cup of tea hits the spot. :) Great honest review Gary. We know what we are getting, and we are not expecting michelin star quality but its nice to have a Greggs every once in a while. Loving your channel
Having left the UK in 1968, I have never seen or been to a Greggs. I travel back to the UK occasionally and try to find things that still exist when I lived their permanently. I do remember Harry Ramsdens in my hometown, no longer there, sadly. My sister, who lives in Preston, does buy from Greggs, next trip I'll try them. As always, Gary, a useful and informative revue. Don't forget the Gaviscon, lol.
I have a soft spot for Harry Ramsdens as it was the only time i've been to a motorway service station eatery (in this case South Mimms) where they charged exactly the same price as they do in their regular high street branches. Usually motorway service station eateries seem to ramp up the price, often double that of normal locations. Chips were OK too.
Some fantastic recent videos, Gary. You and the cameraman put so much time and effort into polished products. Any plans to try out Bocca Di Lupo (perhaps followed by an ice cream over at gelupo across the road)? Keep up the great work guys - always looking forward to what’s in store!
I love the steak bakes and when they are served piping hot I would give them an 8 everytime. All their products are good value and the shops near me are always busy.Another great revue and a very interesting venue.
The temp thing is annoying, I find if you use the app its usually warmer though never piping. The thing about greggs is I find, if you travel, as I am prone to do for work often and you rock up in a new place, if you pick greggs you know what you'll get and you know you can afford it. I think your 'it is what it is and it fills a hole' comment is spot on. is it the best? no. is it ok? yes? is it affordable value? yes. as ever, fair and consistent review Gary.
My old mum fractured her spine, came out of hospital on a zimmer. Mum, said I, where do u want to go, I'll take u anywhere u like. Half an hour later we were parked in a nearby town, bypassing several esteemed eateries en route, and she was inching along the pavement towards Greggs for a steak bake with a steely glint in her eye. I had a coffee. It was gopping. But mum was very happy and had an iced bun too.
That's lovely, your mum has her priorities right, the Steak Bake would have been amazing after the hospital cuisine, the simple pleasures in life are underrated! Steak Bakes are annoyingly delicious though!
Never liked Greggs as to me it’s just belly busting low quality filler , however many people swear by them 🤔…Definitely cheap and cheerful not for me though ..I was brought up in N Ireland back in the 1950s a home were my mothers cooking and baking were legendary and half the kids in the street would sneak in at tea time , my mother never refused one of them 🙏…
He's well overtaken him in quality reviews anyway. Loads of subscribers leaving or constantly slagging him off as a lot of them look like paid reviews that he claims aren't. FRC have lost their ethos and when he has them northern Irish ones with him I don't bother watching, bunch of obnoxious mouths, and as for the profanities? Grow up
@@OJoRob True. Wish the guy well, but his prancing around thumbnails I found irritating. Also watch the Durham Vlogger, his vids are simple but I like them.
Heya Gary! Late Congrats on 100K!!!! 🎊🍾🎊 I love the type of things that Greggs have, but they don't have them here. The only decent sausage roll is one I have to make myself.
I'm 35. When I was a kid a sausage roll was 25p. I feel like Greggs has increased it's prices well above the rate of inflation. Obviously still popular but for me, it's also lost it's roots since the days of a ham and pease stottie, meat and potato slice or a rainbow square cake.
I'm no apologist for Greggs but all catering businesses have seen increases in the cost of ingredients, utility bills, wages, business rates and rent well in excess of inflation. They have to stay profitable, so it's the customer who ultimately pays.
Like your age, things increase. Understand Inflation, firstly. Compared to many bakeries (although probably better) you have to weigh the cost to taste ratio also. Greggs does a job and a well done one for its market position.
Food is not kept warm as they would then have to charge VAT. [Also extra health checks.] I worked there for 28 years and while things may not be top end [and not meant to be] they are tasty, do the job and Greggs takes food safety very seriously. If you want to bake your own get them in Iceland!
Before I retired, I worked as a teacher in a centre for teenagers who were 'school-refusers' (some refused to go to school ... for some the schools refused to have them! Many of them relied on Greggs for their 'hot meal' of the day. It was a popular choice because of the price... on occasion I was known to grab a Baked Bean and Cheese Bake... Haute Cuisine?...Of course not, but it was filling, cheap and not unpalatable!
So sad the effect this must have on the child's bodily and mental development. Probably no vegetables or fruit which will affect their food choices for the rest of their lives.
@@sheilagalvin9342 You are right!... For many of the youngsters I worked with, their poor home life, including their diet ...was a factor in their troubled lives
@@GaryEats By “we” you don’t really to include yourself. You mean the urban poor who are too disorganised or too disadvantaged to organise a decent, healthy meal for themselves. Only in Britain is this thought to be “normal”. In France, the working classes expect to eat well - and they do.
Is that the same company as Gregg's coffee? Haven't seen any Gregg's cafés here in NZ , but they may be here. So I haven't been to one myself. Thanks ☮ Gary for the show
Those were Chipolata sausages i think😉 That pizza looked like an old pillow😉 You braver than me eating all those veggies👀😂 Think i am not sad they have no Greggs in South Africa 😅 another great review thanks
Greetings again from America, Mr. Eats! I’ve never been to Greggs, but I’ve heard of it often from many British youtubes. I probably could not eat much there, as I cannot have milk or eggs. And, yes, I know, that disqualifies probably around 80% of all British foods. I sometimes think that if I look at a map of England for long enough, my body might explode. The gentleman asking if you were okay is actually fairly common over here in America, just with some tweaks. Upon approaching a fast food establishment such as Taco Hell - Roadkill Edition - a staff member will frequently meet you halfway and begin jogging/walking along with you. They will ask questions such as, “Is there a voice in your head talking to you right now?”, or “Do you often feel the need to eat paint chips?”, essentially this is a low-key psych evaluation. You’re supposed to fail, of course, and then they let you in. If you pass, they call the police immediately, because you’re obviously there to rob the joint. Also, I think it would have been hilarious if the donut was piping hot! Like, too hot to even handle.
I had a bacon & cheese wrap the other week for the first time in ages just before playing golf and felt horrible the whole round. Never again! (Actually that's probably why the vegan pastry was good on this review - it didn't contain any lard!)
I agree, Greggs has its place. I occasionally visit for an inexpensive breakfast, a roll with sausage and bacon and a coffee for under GBP 3. It's not the best quality but good value. I see a lot of elderly folk in my local Greggs in the winter with their friends stopping for breakfast and a natter and to keep warm.
Nice review! I had 4 Gregg's sausage rolls for lunch today and boy were they tasty... They went down nicely. I've never seen a proper Gregg's sit-down restaurant like this..
Greggs - it’s exactly what you'd expect, straightforward and reliable. I must say, I agree with you Gary about the veggie sausage roll. It is surprisingly delightful, but only when it's hot, fresh, and crispy. Keep up the excellent work, Gary. Your quality, honest reviews are always appreciated!
@@GaryEats Oh..that’s a shame. Regardless, it’s still a good way to support you for your efforts. I hope you’re getting a decent percentage of the profits.
I saw a tv programme about a factory making items for Greggs. the sausage rolls were made by extruding a long, grey mixture which means I've never been near a Greggs. Thanks for the review. Your review hasn't changed my opinion :D
As a vegetarian, I love their veggie sausage rolls, sausage and bean pasties. We buy our Greggs products from Iceland and, finish cooking at home. That way, they are hot to eat.
I had never had a Greggs despite all the hype until a few months ago. Decided to give it a go and got 2 sausage rolls. Needless to say the weren't great so I probably will never be back.
Gary, you get around mate! The story of Greggs as a business turnaround from a small regional baker to as you say the largest food chain in Britain is incredible. The reason for your pastry delights being lukewarm is to save them having to charge VAT on hot food, thus making their prices 20% cheaper than rival takeaways offering hot food. I agree a lukewarm sausage roll isn’t a patch on a hot one ❤
Absolutely! People very rarely check ingredients or understand the way they affect body, mood and environment when putting so called 'food' in their mouths.
Greggs always baffles me as to how it is so popular. Back in the day a steak bake for a quid was good value, its closer to 3 quid now! Loving the channel Gary keep the vids coming!
I can honestly say we hate Greggs with a passion , living in the North we have so many artisan bakers we're spoilt for choice when it comes to quality. We have family living on the Jurassic Coast who love the better climate and vistas but have one major dislike and that's the fact all they can find are Greggs and they miss their artisan pies and pasties so much we run them a supply down twice a year 🤣 Yes they have cornered a market but that's because 90% of the British peasants seem to have a love affair with cheap and nasty food.....I like this because it makes my club more exclusive 🤣 Great vlog my friend and await the hates 😁
Couldn't agree more. Its amazing that the rest of Europe has less well off people but they would never resort to palm oil laden, chemically treated muck which needs all the chemicals to taste of anything - just like our cruel, intensively reared, tasteless chicken which needs artificial sauces slathered all over it to stop it tasting of cardboard.
@@GaryEats ...everyone's taste receptors are different which is why people's reactions to the same food can vary greatly , good or bad I have a full set of receptors that makes me a super taster and drawn towards more quality food , those born with less receptors who can't taste the difference are lucky as it means they can buy cheaper food 🤣
gary was happy to see this pop up today i have been in hospital since friday. I had a gallstone stuck. So they said was sick and kind of out of it for a bit they took it out yesterday and i got to come home today. Great video lots of nice stuff. We don t have that over here. But we do hace a couple of fine bakeries in my town. Your looking good today in your jumper now i have to look back and see if i missed videos over the last few days. Thanks for taking us with you x
I only go to Greggs outlet. 2 pasties £1.40 your not missing much not going to them there are far better places to get pies and pasties at that have more filling in. and less fatty Morrisons pasties and pies have nicer pastry that's not greasy and have more filling in and are cheaper 2 pasties £2.50 Greggs is over hyped its not that good.
They cannot keep the food hot due to pastry tax. This is from Greggs “If the sausage rolls and bakes were kept hot after they had been baked, then they would be subject to VAT and the customer would have to be charged a higher price, in the same way that we charge VAT on our hot sandwiches which are kept in a heated cabinet and are subject to VAT.”
So they're willing to go with the VAT rules on hot sandwiches but not pastries seems like a petty protest against the rules that they wont win and just pisses off customers.
A mega Greggs inside a Primark store! Talk about hitting your target audience! It’s a well known fact that Gregg’s produce is either stone cold or thermonuclear hot - never just the right temperature. Greggs sausage rolls and Yum Yums - the stuff of legends! My mark, 8/10 for what it is…
Thurston's before it was Greggs was a class above Greggs. It is 20 + years since I tasted fast food pasties, sausage rolls etc due to a severe allergy to onions and mushrooms. When I asked Greggs if their products contained these two ingredients and informed them of my severe allergy, they refused to serve me, as they hadn't a clue to whether they contained them.
That's my experience, usually luke warm at best or off the scale hot, rarely in between - but I do keep going back regardless if I need something to fill the gap. A solid 7 as Gary would say.
@@GaryEats horses for courses, Gary! You certainly get what you pay for, no more, no less.! The target audience wants something (sometimes!) hot , cheap and filling. And they are consistent! Even the bacon is delivered pre-laid out on metal trays…
Thank you again for another great review. My great nephew loves a Greggs sausage roll, he is nearly 5. We can’t get him past a Greggs without having to go in. I usually buy a steak bake for me! Totally agree with you on the temperature of the food. I will give the other bakes a go when I next visit, they sounded really good. Please keep up the great reviews.
Former Greggs worker here 🙋🏼♀️. The pasty tax is to blame for the pasties not being kept hot, so that the VAT increase doesn't get passed to the customer. Is a shame as im sure there are plenty out there who wouldn't mind paying the extra for hot pastys, but then it could price some out altogether. When i first started, sausage rolls were 50p, and they were 4 for £1.50. Steak/chicken bakes, etc, were £1, quickly up to £1.10 but you could then buy 2 for £2. Prices have just shot up!
I do love a Greggs. Their Corned beef pasty is the Star, though some say they aren't available in England? Great channel Gary and the variety is top notch.
I’m not a great fan of Greggs but for a quick cuppa and a pastry it’s fine. Cooplands on the other hand is gross, I’ve been twice and I’m not impressed.
The heir to the Greggs bakery chain has had his jail term for sexually abusing young boys cut by five years. Colin Gregg was jailed for 13 and a half years in March for indecently assaulting four boys aged between 10 and 14 over three decades. The 76-year-old, from Newcastle, lost a bid to have his convictions overturned at London's Court of Appeal. But senior judges said his prison term, imposed at Newcastle Crown Court, was too long and should be reduced. The original trial heard Gregg, who helped build up the family business and was also a social worker and teacher, was a "predatory paedophile" who abused his position of trust. Swimming pool Trial judge Robin Mairs described him as "charismatic, inspiring teacher and mentor" who used those attributes to groom young boys. The assaults began in 1963 and continued over a period of almost 30 years, during which Gregg was a teacher. He abused one child in a swimming pool and others were molested in a gym, his study or a car. Sasha Wass QC, representing him at the Appeal Court, argued his sentence was excessive in light of the fact his offending was not in the most serious category. Lord Justice Davis, sitting with Mrs Justice Nicola Davies and Judge Nicholas Dean QC, said the appeal against sentence must be allowed. He said: "Having reflected upon the matter, the view of this court is that a total sentence of eight-and-a-half years is appropriate for this offending and for this offender." I don’t go to Greggs
Nooooo! Gary don't do it! Leave our beloved Greggs alone. We know its not five star, hell it isn't even two star food but its comfort food and i can't imagine a world without Greggs.
A brilliant review Gary, I will defiantly have to try out their Vegetarian options, I have heard some people prefer them to the meat products, I'm with you on their caramel doughnut and their other flavours.
They have got a drive through in Irlam near Manchester. In a future life, when I am a fat Northerner that would be my ultimate dream to live nearby 🤣🤣🤣
It is what it is ,we know it's not top notch but it's available everywhere , although it's not cheap anymore and if u have ever tried Burger King in the motorway services that has dropped in standards the most
Like Weatherspoons, it is what it is. It's cheap, cheerful, and filling. Love a bacon roll with brown sauce and a coffee when we pop into town every other month. Can't complain.
Liked and subscribed Gary, thanks! I’m from Europe. I’m happy to tell that I don’t know Gregg’s. Sure it looks absolutely delicious even though sometimes not warm enough. I’d really want to try once. Only once. But quite some Brits have a weekly visit or even a daily one, don’t they? But while obesity in the UK grows American-style, I’m sure Gregg’s don’t mind.

Great honest review Gary. We know what we are getting, and we are not expecting michelin star quality but its nice to have a Greggs every once in a while. Loving your channel
Thats very kind to say thank you very much
Can't believe you rated the vegan sausage roll high 😲 I've tried it myself and the texture alone was enough to send me running! All the best Gary!
I tried one. I gagged on it. Threw it away.

Glad you like them!
Lucky escape!! Lol
Me too, away for more than 40 years now, never looked back!
You're not missing anything. Gregg's is crap in my opinion. It's only popular because Brits like crap food
Where did you move to?
I have a soft spot for Harry Ramsdens as it was the only time i've been to a motorway service station eatery (in this case South Mimms) where they charged exactly the same price as they do in their regular high street branches. Usually motorway service station eateries seem to ramp up the price, often double that of normal locations. Chips were OK too.
Great review again Gary love how diverse they all are with a fair scoring system
Thank you ever so much Simon
Some fantastic recent videos, Gary. You and the cameraman put so much time and effort into polished products. Any plans to try out Bocca Di Lupo (perhaps followed by an ice cream over at gelupo across the road)? Keep up the great work guys - always looking forward to what’s in store!
Osteria Romana instead David, thank you!
I love the steak bakes and when they are served piping hot I would give them an 8 everytime. All their products are good value and the shops near me are always busy.Another great revue and a very interesting venue.
Thank you very much, Robert. I do like the bakes but only when they’re hot.
You are as honest as the day is long gary 👍👍
That’s very kind to say, thank you very much
The temp thing is annoying, I find if you use the app its usually warmer though never piping.
Thank you very much for your comment, Grahame, I think it offers good value but I wish the bakes were a lot warmer
I bet the people serving were thinking “Crikey, this bloke really likes his Greggs”.
The server couldn't believe it when I went up a 4th time lol

That's lovely!
Hope your mum is recovering. I'm sure a few more steak bakes will aid her recovery.

I'm 35. When I was a kid a sausage roll was 25p. I feel like Greggs has increased it's prices well above the rate of inflation. Obviously still popular but for me, it's also lost it's roots since the days of a ham and pease stottie, meat and potato slice or a rainbow square cake.
I remember four hot sausage rolls for a pound, if you didn't eat them quickly the paper bag went translucent 😂 mmm grease
Yes seems to be the same everywhere
I'm no apologist for Greggs but all catering businesses have seen increases in the cost of ingredients, utility bills, wages, business rates and rent well in excess of inflation. They have to stay profitable, so it's the customer who ultimately pays.
Like your age, things increase. Understand Inflation, firstly.
Compared to many bakeries (although probably better) you have to weigh the cost to taste ratio also. Greggs does a job and a well done one for its market position.
can still get stotties there in north east
Food is not kept warm as they would then have to charge VAT. [Also extra health checks.] I worked there for 28 years and while things may not be top end [and not meant to be] they are tasty, do the job and Greggs takes food safety very seriously. If you want to bake your own get them in Iceland!
Yes Mark, that's understandable
Unless hot i dont buy from Greggs
and the vat-they charge a standard 20% even if served COLD
@@dirtyharry3479 If it's eat in then they have to charge 20% hot or cold. If it's takeaway then it's zero rated.

So sad the effect this must have on the child's bodily and mental development. Probably no vegetables or fruit which will affect their food choices for the rest of their lives.

I understand your comment,Wendy. we have to remember sometimes this is all we can afford
@@GaryEats By “we” you don’t really to include yourself. You mean the urban poor who are too disorganised or too disadvantaged to organise a decent, healthy meal for themselves. Only in Britain is this thought to be “normal”. In France, the working classes expect to eat well - and they do.
That should read “you don’t intend to include yourself.” You obviously eat well most of the time.
Is that the same company as Gregg's coffee? Haven't seen any Gregg's cafés here in NZ , but they may be here. So I haven't been to one myself. Thanks ☮ Gary for the show

Excellent presenting as always. Camera was all over the place at times in this one though, missing prompts for close ups as well.
Thank you very much for the information. It’s really appreciated.
the veggie sos roll is actually vegan..

Trouble with greggs is there's nothing healthy. I'm not saying it's not nice food, its just not healthy.
I agree, almost everything Gregg's sells is junk and will make people die sooner (compared to eating whole foods).
Absolutely! People very rarely check ingredients or understand the way they affect body, mood and environment when putting so called 'food' in their mouths.
I agree, it's almost all junk and could have health implications if consumed regularly over time
Internal inflammation. Trans-fats..
They do quite a few salad options and sandwiches.
Greggs always baffles me as to how it is so popular. Back in the day a steak bake for a quid was good value, its closer to 3 quid now! Loving the channel Gary keep the vids coming!
I have to agree with you. The prices are going up very steadily and thank you.
I can honestly say we hate Greggs with a passion , living in the North we have so many artisan bakers we're spoilt for choice when it comes to quality.
We have family living on the Jurassic Coast who love the better climate and vistas but have one major dislike and that's the fact all they can find are Greggs and they miss their artisan pies and pasties so much we run them a supply down twice a year 🤣
Yes they have cornered a market but that's because 90% of the British peasants seem to have a love affair with cheap and nasty food.....I like this because it makes my club more exclusive 🤣
Great vlog my friend and await the hates 😁
Couldn't agree more. Its amazing that the rest of Europe has less well off people but they would never resort to palm oil laden, chemically treated muck which needs all the chemicals to taste of anything - just like our cruel, intensively reared, tasteless chicken which needs artificial sauces slathered all over it to stop it tasting of cardboard.
LOL not sure why but your first part of the comment made me laugh. Onwards and upwards!

Greggs is over hyped its not that good.
Aren’t you special…
me too ,only been too one rugby game ,and that was free, after the earthquake in Chch
As Dennis Nedru says in Jurassic Park. Nobody cares.

As a regular Greggs customer my morning is 2 sausage rolls ( not vegan ) with the HP sauce dip and coffee 😀
Great choice
Former Greggs worker here 🙋🏼♀️. The pasty tax is to blame for the pasties not being kept hot, so that the VAT increase doesn't get passed to the customer. Is a shame as im sure there are plenty out there who wouldn't mind paying the extra for hot pastys, but then it could price some out altogether. When i first started, sausage rolls were 50p, and they were 4 for £1.50. Steak/chicken bakes, etc, were £1, quickly up to £1.10 but you could then buy 2 for £2. Prices have just shot up!

Swimming pool
Trial judge Robin Mairs described him as "charismatic, inspiring teacher and mentor" who used those attributes to groom young boys.
He said: "Having reflected upon the matter, the view of this court is that a total sentence of eight-and-a-half years is appropriate for this offending and for this offender."
