A coder, it all makes sense now. I can code in 11 langs and speak 4 badly. I like learning 1-10 in as many as I can. My dyslexia and dyspraxia didn't get in the way of my memory ;-)
Xiaoma being a former software developer was quite a shock to me! When I read the title, I was like "There is no way he taught himself how to create AI just because he wanted to make this". As someone getting into learning French and hopefully other languages in the future, as well as being an undergraduate computer science major at the moment, this new AI for language learning is actually insane. I really hope this fully comes to fruition and can be accessed by people all over the world one day! Thanks, Xiaoma!
It's not as hard as you imagine! You can actually use AI to create this tool for you. Just ask ChatGPT (4): "I want to make a program where the user speaks and a chat gpt AI responds." then work through what it says. Then afterwards ask it to pre-seed the AI to act as a language coach for X language. This app is probably a hundred or so LoC, this stuff is not complex at all.
@@twmcmahan Developer here, I'll give some insights about why it makes sense. Because there are a lot of parallels to be drawn between learning a programming language and a human language. When you're learning a language (regardless human or programming one), you're learning building blocks that then allow you to unlock being able to affect the real world using some of your language skills. The more language skills you develop, the broarder your horizon becomes. So usually, your goal as both a programmer and a language learner, is to figure out what building blocks matters the most for you to learn to then do what you wanna do, while also enjoying the new fun things you get to discover building on top of these skills and discovering new goals. Also, when learning programming languages, you're also learning about concepts that apply to many different languages, just like human languages. In fact, this same logic applies to every single skill, but there is a stronger link between these 2 skills through the fact that in both situations, you're learning languages as well as practical applications of languages.
@@PierreMiniggio i disagree that learning programming languages and human languages are more alike than other skills. They arent lol. Especially going from English to Chinese.

@FCotherI think the most interesting way to learn kanji that I've found so far is with the Migaku browser extension. I never used it that much because I've been on a short 3 year "break" but it seemed useful even in beta.
This is genius! An AI that teaches you languages without having social anxieties is just amazing. I do am very intrigued how this project goes. Huge props to the devs!
Social anxiety doesnt exists. It's the resentment against your mother that holds you back. You need to forgive her. Go meet her and tell her im the face, doesnt matter what she says. Its about you.
Wow! Insanely amazing AI tutor. Was quite shocked how personalized it was, and the fact that it's something that can be available 24/7 and be so flexible based on the student's level and be possibly no cost makes me really believe this technology to have a bright future. I really wish it becomes something everybody can access and will use. Wish you the best Xiaoma!!
I have to honestly say this: I've been a language professor for over 15 years and this is a BILLION DOLLAR idea, I would love to jump in man wow.! this is amazing.
Congratulations! You seem to be a pioneer in a new area of language learning. This kind of interactive learning appears to replicate the much needed immediate input/response/feedback given during conversation with actual native speakers. Finding this kind of interaction can be difficult, especially if there are no native speakers available or the student has difficulty interacting with others due to personality or other social factors.
This is incredible! There is a lot to be worried for the rise of AI, but also a lot to be exited for. So many nuanced areas in life are going to be improved by applying some ML and AI. Projects like this are going to bring so much positive energy to the world. I am a data scientist and ML engineer, whilst also learning Spanish, and I have been so excited for the genesis of AI powered language tutors! What’s more is this is only the beginning, and I think you know that.
One thing you didn't ask the AI is if it could slow down when speaking. Most beginners to Chinese (like me) can't wrap their head around the language at full speed. Heck, even half speed could pose a problem! 😉
That is the first thing that I had issue with. Maybe having a polyglot programming AI to teach foreign languages is not ideal. There are so many subtle nuances in the spoken words that having them pointed out and sounded out maybe more beneficial. I'm sure he has thought about those things but it would be beneficial to highlight features that vary upon learner skill if financial backing is the goal.
Yes, I am learning Chinese as well this year and it takes someone speaking slower for me to get the tones during a sentence. I agree that asking AI to slow down or help with tones would be nice.
this is the opposite of what you need when you have anxiety, it'll only make it worse lol you need to start going out and talk with people, not be scared. people dont bite, and if they do, learn to bite back you cant be anxious forever, you're losing out on a lot of experiences and a big part of life
@@befer You're not very empathetic... or understanding. :( Guess people should just stop having depression, ADHD, pschizophrenia, or any other mental affliction. Dang, why didn't we all think of that before?!

The future of technology and how that ties into language learning is super fascinating and I look forward to seeing more such videos!
You know, this isn't only fantastic for learning languages but also for retention! Think about folks who acquire a language because of time spent overseas or something, then they return home and don't get to use it often. Soon they may get rusty or forget it altogether. But this would provide an interactive dialogue for maintaining proficiency! I love it
I appreciate this and this sounds very exciting! You mention the anxiety of human interaction with native speakers. That is part of the challenge/excitement that comes with learning languages. Hope this won’t be lost in our search for comfort through technology in this new age 😅
This is exactly how I want to learn and refresh my French skills! I took 5 years of it in school, but that was more than 10 years ago, so I've forgotten so much that I don't even know what I still remember of it. It's all over the place when I try to study, some programs or topics seem far too easy, while others are way too hard. I'm so excited for what AI can do in personalizing tutoring and learning. I've already been using ChatGPT for things like this, but the speaking component is going to be a game changer!

That's very impressive! DuoLingo is also trying to get me to upgrade to Plus for their AI. I get along pretty well on the free version particularly because I also include languages that I already know pretty well. Chinese is not one of them at all, but well over a decade ago I was working at a primary school a couple of hours away where half the school population were Chinese and they mandated all students to learn Mandarin, so I got a Chinese teacher to teach me only Ni Hao Ma! I practised it for a couple of weeks and then at church a couple of Chinese people visited and I greeted them in my most enthusiastic Nǐ hǎo ma! 你好吗!And they were so excited and thought they were going to have a conversation in Chinese, but I had to immediately say "SORRY, that's the only Chinese I know!" That is fucking cool. I love it. I took Mandarin in College and sucked. Now 25 years later I can hardly remember anything. I gave you my email address. Can't wait to see what you are doing. Awesome.
Xiaoma i become your fan because you fluent in Chinese..So inspiring..
Pretty amazing as a french person who want to learn english and also as a data scientist you just gave me the vibe to build a silimar think Thanks!
你好吗!And they were so excited and thought they were going to have a conversation in Chinese, but I had to immediately say "SORRY, that's the only Chinese I know!" LOL.
If you take this guy on a trip with you, you're going to do alright and get along with everyone
You lost weight & are looking FABULOUS!!! I haven’t been around for a year but I’m back:) I forgot how good ur videos make me feel:) I gotta focus on the positive & let go/let hod, u know??? ♥️☮️🤟

真厉害小马,我会试试啊!谢谢你今天的视频!
SO COOL!!!!! I'm excited! :D
I hope this will be released for alot of languages (for me it would be Japanese) because this seems pretty amazing, although i would definitely prefer to use it as a check/ further explanation from what i've learned from other sources until its spot-free
