Thanks Cosmic P! FINALLY - two teams who figured out the need to not waste time on too much discussion! It was clear from the pace that the losing team was going to make it into the next round!
Great match...but actually bees carry pollen mixed with nectar in their corbiculae. So SOAS's answer was arguably correct, as much so as the accepted response. That adjudication mistake could well have decided the match! But at least both teams get to play on 🧐⚖️🐝
SOAS are now one of my favourite teams. Great teamwork, and a sense of not wanting to waste too much time. I’m looking forward to their future appearances 😝😎
We just saw two incredibly low-key (and often also very hesitant) captains. I felt that the two teams were carried by Elkington and Dorn respectively, who interestingly also seemed to be their team's most cheerful members. Anyway, if SOAS can gain a bit of confidence from their performance, they should cruise into the second round. Interestingly, both teams have great problems with buzzer-speed (in fact, neither team has got any). Anyway, overall I felt that this was a fantastic match! Thank you so much for everything, CosmicP!
Hello again! What a great match! And we will see both teams again, a real treat! Although I always felt that the winning team would prevail, the losing team did not go quietly into the night. Well done by both teams. My best to both schools, and to each individual representing them.
Shoutout to Jeffrey Liu from Teddy on the left - an incredibly gentle, absolute legend of a man; amazing to see him here. Let's go Teddy!! Excited to see this!
“an incredibly gentle, absolute legend of a kind” Mr Liu would be a legend for his hair alone-it has a timeless academic aesthetic, especially paired with that black turtleneck, and is perfectly maintained-but I have no doubt he has other legendary attributes as well.
I didn’t hear it as “Margritte”-I wouldn’t assume that someone from Cambridge, Massachusetts is necessarily speaking non-rhotically-but something more like “Mau-gritte,” almost between a /ɔ/ sound and a schwa /ə/ sound, with the latter being entirely acceptable. I think that’s a bit different than adding an extra syllable to the name “Kitts” in “St. Kitts and Nevis.”
For the second, that's a lovely way to wrap up the first round. With 20 starters-for-ten answered for the second week in a row, we say goodbye officially to UEA, Liverpool and Leeds. If I were a betting man, I'd say UCL will play St Andrews next week (as usually 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 in the HSL matchups), with Durham playing today's losers the week after. 13/27 and 17/33 are ok bonus rates, and that's also the first time in a while there were no penalties all night. Bring on the HSL matches and the 2R 😉!
The promise of a repachage means that there is no garbage time for the first round since you're still watching if the losing team can make the threshold
So SOAS doing well knocks out all of the bunch of losing teams at 125. The best 4 losing teams are: 1. UCL - 175 2. Durham - 165 3. SOAS - 155 4. St. Andrew's - 145 Then it's gonna be UCL vs St. Andrew's and Durham vs SOAS in the repachage matches
Seems unfair to me that Amol didn’t accept SOAS’ St Kits a Nevis answer, especially given that their captain clearly has a bit of a lisp or speech impediment…. Nonetheless great showing from both teams and I’m excited to see SOAS again!
In UC they usually don't accept names if they aren't exactly correct, so I think it was a fair call. In a competition where that is an issue, it might be advisable not to have someone with a speech impediment as your captain, because no matter which decision the judge makes, it may seem unfair to one team.
@martinmills135 I misspelled one word as another, so I clearly can't distinguish between the concepts they represent and am thus unqualified to make any point. Thank you for putting me in my place. Students at an Oriental Studies school should be able to provide wildly laughable guess answers for basic Buddhism knowledge questions without abuse from illiterate fools like me.
Thanks as always for the upload. I'm here once again to bemoan the total lack of knowledge of nearly every team about British ecology/ fauna and flora. Those bird questions were all very easy, and no, I don't know all the scientific names. The English description sufficed. Very rarely do any of the contestants seem to care or seem concerned that they have no clue. The bee basket was another example.
Yes, it is sad that no one knows these things anymore. In modern agriculture, there is no room for these birds and none of these young people will miss them...
FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE... WHY ARE YOU GUYS WHISPERING *THAT* LOW????? (Also, where is Dorn looking at? O.o?) ... Connie Francis. The luckiest pop star in the history of the world! She had a contract for 10 singles. The first 9 all tanked and the 10th was Stupid Cupid. These days if your first record is no 1 but your second is top ten but ONLY top ten, Simon Cowell is already thinking of replacing you with next year's winner. Record companies don't give all those chances now. Not wanting to lose her after all that, they gave her another contract for 5 singles and the next two tanked again.
10:08 - It's weird to me that both Paxman and Rajan put a lot of effort to make good french pronunciation when necessary, but don't give a fuck about portuguese pronunciation. I'm brazilian and wouldn't have gotten this question because of him saying it completely wrong. And i really mean COMPLETELY', its not just a single phonem that is slightly different, it's a whole different word (pa - ra - no - AH, with a hard R in the middle). So Rajan accepts “Margritte” but not “St. Kittis and Nevis”?
the team had already called it correctly and just a nervous stutter
@@anakintalldog291well yes, that’s what I’m arguing for.

Did Hasler not get points for stammering, or did he indeed say "St Kitts" wrong?
He said St Kittis and thus added a syllable, so clearly incorrect unfortunately - albeit as close as it gets.
