I’m building my dream home and homestead from scratch with very little experience. Some weeks this means saving a TON of money … other weeks it means making HUGE mistakes that cost me more than paying for labour would have.
This week I’m working on finishing off my ABS venting for my plumbing. I have to finish my sewage venting so that I can start roofing my metal roof. Doing a metal roof really threw me for a loop! I was very shocked with how difficult it is.

Hey you may want to start using a Miter Saw to cut your PVC Pipes from here on out, if you have any more in the future. Goes a lot faster. Just a suggestion, not that you need it, you're doing such an Awesome Job!! Seriously, so cool!

Biata, I have worked with experienced carpenters, plumbers, engineers and architects and they also make mistakes. You are doing a great job and should be proud of your accomplishments and put the mistakes behind. As you said you can find uses for the roofing for wood storage etc. Keep up the good work!

Hi Biata! Don't be so hard on yourself, remember most homes are built by a whole team of people who have been doing one specific thing for years, you are on your own. You are doing amazingly well, and it's really good to see someone putting out the actual hardships they face rather than showing a finished project as if it all ran smoothly. Looking forward to next week, take care, Naomi x

I have to give you a new tribal name: "Glue spiller"....
Good morning, tough one. What a bummer with the roof sheets. You did the right thing, using what you can and putting the "useless"parts aside for future projects. They are not a total loss, but here and now it just sucks not to have the right materials AND to have to use more money to get on with the project at hand.
Using metal shearers is SO difficult - not like using regular scissors at all. I only tried it a few times and never HAD to learn to do it properly, so I didn't. You rock!

There are larger metal snips. The yellow, red and green handle tin snips are for smaller jobs, with thinner metal. The larger snips are dark grey. They should cut the roofing metal easier.
Stay safe and well. Keep going girl! You are doing a great job! 👏

You are amazing having not used snips before does make it hard plus it's good having 2 people.reminds me of when I was 13 and trying to install an antenna on the roof by myself, was doing it for my dads birthday.I got it done somehow. You have a great spirit focus on the good, not the negative and focus on one task at a time to keep from getting overwhelmed.what you are doing 95% wouldn't even know where to start...You go 👧 you are anazing

  • @gregorymay9004
    @gregorymay9004 10 месяцев назад

Biota,❤ without sounding too chauvinistic there are three different kinds of snips. There are red green and yellow. You are using yellow and those are to make straight cuts. You need a pair of red and green the ridge cut left and the greens cut, right. It would be easier on you if you had those.

This is said with a big smile and a wink. Did you ever think of scaffolding? Since you were doing this alone, falling off the roof could set you back months if you were injured. I am still awed by your willingness to forge ahead and learn as you go. You are the perfect example of someone with no quit in them. Way to go, it will all work out in the end, and you will have years of satisfaction saying yes it's my home, and I built it! After a year or so of relaxing, maybe you will get the bug to build another house since you now know all about it. 🙃

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata Well it worked out in the end but using that light weight metal you could have used an extension ladder as well but it would have required moving the ladder for every nail so I guess there is no good solution. In the end the job is almost over so keep at it I know you will persevere.

Please get a nibler tool or a nibler attachment for a power drill to easily cut the metal. Once you cut with one of these tools you will never use hand cutters again. Keep at it girl, you are doing better than a lot of men would playing in the same sandbox. I retired from the trades 6 years ago after 50 years in the multi trades construction. Trust me, the best crew I had were ladies who were inexperienced, but willing to learn. I'm rooting for you! You make me proud with your "Can do" attitude!

Make sure your snips are sharp and the bolt holding them together is fairly tight ( you want a bit of resistance to cutting so they aren't trying to flip sideways as you cut). You just sharpen the top edge not the face. You can get electric shears if that doesn't work

You IMPRESS me!! Take a deep breath, understand that metal is mean, but you’re resilient. Go look at aviation offset snips. They are literally almost 90 degrees to the metal when making cuts, no fumbling trying to make straight cuts with just cut metal flopping back in your path.

When running ABS through the metal roof you will need to put a snow diverter behind it. At least as tall as the vent pipe. Snow moving on the metal can snap them off. Had it happen to me. 😏

One of the most common misconceptions is the prints or plans are exact, only part of this is true, on one job we had 6 revisions, got to go with what is instead what is on paper, and I will be among those many who say STOP beating yourself! What your doing is hard! It took years before I was proficient at many skills, remember we learn by doing, and it can get damned expensive, I bought tin snips and supplies 33 years ago and still have them, worth the money for good tools you'll get your use out of them. Grin n bear it, cuss a blue streak if needed, you have a lot of support out here just ask😊 👍

There's metal plumbing scrapping. It has a bunch of holes all through it all the way down. It's about one inch wide to half an inch wide. All you have to use a screw on one side and a screw on the other side. Just wrap it over it. Screw it down and it will be no problem

The correct snips to use are right or left "offset" snips, which are just like your yellow ones but provides clearance for the cut.
Also left handed snips aren't just for left handed people but for making left handed cuts

You can't learn if you don't do mistakes, that is bye the mistake you learn. The founder of IKEA Ingvar Kamprad have a thesis : "That's OK to do mistakes if you can learn from them.". What I can see you learn of your mistakes, and you not afraid to ask for help then you see that can't manged that step of build without any help.

what to say , i am proud of you, even i try to do everything by myself sometimes i come to the point , leave it to the expert or check the tools they are using, in germany we say" no master fall of the heaven" or " you has to build 3 house before you get one nearly perfect, best regards from the "Oberlausitz"

I know that you have a few more things to do with the steel from the roof so it might be worth getting a nibbler. I put my metal roof on with a nibbler and I would never try it with shears again. I think that I got mine for like $20 at Harbor Freight and cut about 10 mins off of each panel cut.

Use a nibbler attachment which makes it easy to cut the roofing material. It is a battery tool which does a cut much neater. Don't know what is called in Canada but I am sure they will know

I took my vent pipe out the side of the house instead of out of the roof that way no holes in the roof. But you may need a variance

Biata do they not use PVC pipe in Canada ?
Biata a few tips for you …
Don’t forget your nail plates in your sills and studs to protect your plumbing from screws and nails being punctured into them…
Don’t forget to foam around your plumbing, going into the cold area to keep the cold draft out of the house and to fire stop your wall …
I made pipe caps for pipes going through the roof that hold a laser so you know where to drill your hole in your roof…
Wear is swimming goggles when drilling above your head to keep the sawdust out of your eyes
Stay positive don’t let the roofing mistake get to you. It happens to everybody stay strong stay safe.
Biata do you know they make right and left-handed tin snips other than the straight now?

Venting is done in ABS in Canada for the most part! Stronger and a better product for cold weather! PVC can be used for the rest but I just went with the stronger option!
