George Hamilton is the commentator.RTE the TV broadcaster in Ireland decided to show it live on the off chance Bulgaria didn't get the draw they needed.
The game was shown in Ireland, albeit with an hour delay. Someone spoke to Jack Charlton to congratulate him on qualification, “Nah he says what you on about I’m watching it here, it’s 0-0 we’re still in the first half” 😂
it was even better that it was Bulgaria that Ireland finished ahead of, we were always getting robbed over there, the 1977 match where we had a good goal disalowed, and again earlier in the group, even in this match the ref gave Bulgaria everything that was going, never jumped so high in my life when Scotland scored

What should never be forgotten and always is , is that we beat Bulgaria 2-0 in the previous match and got robbed over there . Ireland were not lucky to qualify. We deserved it . Fair play to Scotland all the same for stuffing them
What should also never be forgotten is that Bulgaria were top of their group and needed only ONE point from the last two games to qualify and even your own official fanzine, dedicated to the national side and the travelling support, in the issue post your Luxembourg away win and pre-final matches, put Bulgaria in the qualifying 8 for Euro 88. I still have it somewhere here at home. If Bulgaria hadn't taken the Scots game as a "gimme", things would have been different (France did the same blunder in 94 wc qualifiers btw). Also, I was AT this game and didn't think the ref was a HOMER....but I do remember your travelling support being somewhat miffed at a couple of decisions. (btw the Irish were the friendliest, best fans I had seen in Sofia up to that point, very fond memories of them and thats why I cheered you chaps on in Euro 88, what a GOAL BY WHELAN eh!) I always hear Irish fans talking about this game as if it was the Mike Riley show v Arsenal at Old Trafford in 2004, but it really was nowhere near as biased as that. with respect, N
Would remind you Ireland received a helping hand from the ref at Hampden. Allowed a quick-free-kick miles from where the offence took place, with Maurice Malpas still on the ground with a head injury. Not that I am bitter.

Both Ireland and Scotland national teams were mostly getting positive reactions by Bulgarian fans. Even the Bulgarian commentator of this match after the final whistle congratulated the Scots for the deserved win and wished Ireland luck in the Euros. Even to this day Scotland and Ireland are rather sympathetic teams to most Bulgarians. Reading all the hateful and genuinely anti-bulgarian comments here is hilarious :) But I guess it's the normal attitude from UK people towards Eastern Europe in general. Probably part of the cold war propaganda, which was seemingly more negative in the West than it was in the East.
Ironically Helmut Kohl was the linesman who didn't flag the Dutch goal as offside, which it was in the laws at the time, in the 1-0 defeat at the finals
Here was I thinking he was the (West) German Chancellor. :-) Fair play to Scotland though, they were second bottom of the group, they had nothing to play for against Bulgaria but they did what they always do, fought like lions.
Do you notice there's no handshakes at the end? Bulgaria were a disgrace that night. Cynical dangerous fouling, total lack of sportsmanship, and it gave Scotland great pleasure to wreck their qualification dreams.
Shame Gary Mackay never really kicked on from that. He seemed to dine on that moment for some time. Likes of John Collins and Gary McAllister overtook him for that playmaker berth. Mackay just stagnated a year or so after that

I doubt everything was 100% honest in this game. Come on, Bulgaria needed a draw to qualify for Euro 1988, and in the '87 minute they conceived a goal on counter attack, from a team that had no chances to qualify. Either Scotland was highly motivated by the Irish football federation, or Bulgaria was "highly motivated". I believe the 2nd option was more likely, as Bulgaria was in the last years of communism, and so, its economy was in big trouble.
