- Easy hike with big rewards! SoCal to Fresno to Dinkey Lakes. Middle of August, 2017. 9 friends. Great weather. Lots of mosquitoes (common here). 10-miles of off-roads to trailhead. What are you waiting for?!
Overnight permits are obtained through the Sierra National Forest jurisdiction. Nearest services are at Shaver Lake. Closest city center is Fresno.
This video was shot entirely on a Panasonic Lumix G7 with the kit lens. Post-production was done on Final Cut Pro. I hope you enjoy it!

Nice! I think this settles it. I'm definitely including the Dinkey Lakes and Black Cap Basin in this year's Sierra hike.
Michael Burgess I think it's a great idea!!
My favorite backpacking place on earth. I have been there at least 25 times… Swede Lake is my favorite. Thanks for a great video!
Very happy you liked the video, Mike! It's really a great place. I definitely want to go back 24 more times!
@@JonHarting And, I am going 2 more times this year!
i went to dinkey lakes when i was just a little kid with my brother dad and dads best firend it was just an overall amazing experience and being able to watch this video rly helped me experience and remember it all over again :)
that's awesome! this is why i make these videos
Kool, it looks the same, 40 years later!!!
What a epic video have been back here recently?
Thank you! Unfortunately, I have not. Backpacking in Europe ATM. Switzerland is beautiful - reminds me of the High Sierra!
Awesome video!! Another new area to explore. I had never even heard of it until now. Really beautiful and super fun to go with a big group of friends. That sunset shot from Camp 1 and the morning shot from Camp 2 were just epic!! That's why we go up there. Good on ya for getting up early not to miss it. The water must not have been freezing if you guys were able to linger in it. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for taking us along.
+Catherine Gregory Thank you so much for the kind words!! Yes, great area that definitely exceeded my expectations. This was the biggest group I've had yet and it was a lot of fun. Once you get through the roads and start the hike, you're hitting a lake about every mile-and-a-half. The lakes were relatively warm at such a high elevation so I think they must have been shallow. Thanks again for watching! 👍
That was such an awesome trip, probably the highlight of my entire summer. Thanks again for having us, Jon! I truly hope to join y'all for another trip in the future!
David! Great having you and Kalvin out with us. That was such a fun and memorable trip. Looking forward to the next one!
loved the animated map....kudos to the baitcaster dude who caught the trout....beautiful place.....nicely produced....ron r
+Ron Romero Thanks, Ron! I'm glad you liked it. Really appreciate the words! I used my phone for the animated map.. I'm all about being creative aka super low-tech haha. This area exceeded my expectations for sure!
Great editing! Really enjoyed your video. Looks like a fun trip.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was a great trip. Hoping to do another one sooner than later!
Pretty cool obsidian rocks
Yeah for sure! Thanks for watching
Beautiful views. How'd you find this? Geez!
Thanks, Bruce!! I think mostly I was trying to find something relatively easy since it was the first time about half the group had ever backpacked. Plus, the bonus of a loop hike! I watched several RUclips videos.. The area actually exceeded my expectations in person. The view from the ridge at Island Lake was EPIC. Worth traversing the OHV roads if you can get there!
Thanks, I found the trailhead on Google Maps and marked this for a future hike. Epic find!
Agreed! Nicely filmed and edited, I wish I was there! Haha this is going on the bucket list. What are you shooting with if you don’t mind me asking?
Of course not! I shoot on a Lumix G7 📸 Thanks so much for the nice comment and for watching 😁
Hey Jon, just doing another loop of your epic videos. Hope you are doing well in school.
Thanks Bruce! Glad you enjoy them. Things are extremely busy but it's a good feeling. Can't wait to get back to backpacking and shooting someday. Always appreciate the support 🙌🏼💯
@@JonHarting Can you believe I got a permit to hike from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows for mid August. If you have any recommendations re clothing & expected temps, I would like to know.
@@ovp2go temps and weather can vary wildly so you'll just have to wait until you get closer. Good news is bugs are usually minimal by then. Weather *should be fairly mild* but I've been caught in a lightning hail storm over there in August. I've also gone through in August with 100% beautiful weather. So just bring layers and be ready to adjust your gear as you get closer accordingly. I usually make little gear adjustments as trips get closer and you get that more accurate weather forecast 👍🏻
Nice filming and editing.
Thank you so much!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great quality video, what are you using to shoot?
Matthew Brown Thanks, Matthew! I'm using a Lumix G7 currently and then. It's good for now and records in 4K 👍 Appreciate you watching.
Hey, I am trying to organize a 6-8 person backpacking trip to Dinkey Lakes. Can you hook up some intel on wilderness permits, parking, etc. please? Thank you for any pointers you can provide in advance. Much Love!
Dinkey Lakes lie in the Sierra National Forest land so you'll need to obtain permits from them. Here's a link: www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sierra/passes-permits/?cid=fsbdev7_018115
Parking is at the trailhead via OHV roads. You'll need to get that information from the rangers when you pick up your wilderness permits. For example, there was a fallen tree blocking the usual route so rangers gave us a map to follow to get there. You'll need a high clearance vehicle at a minimum. This is from the western approach.
There's also another route from Cliff Lake which might be logistically easier but we were unable to obtain permits as that one is more popular.
Hope that helps! Please subscribe 😁
Looks like fun ! Whats the elevation of the trail head?
I think it's about 8,500'. Thanks for watching. Beautiful area!
Why always this annoying music.Destroys all.
