  • 3 day backpacking trip up into the remote wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas. Gnarly hike to our campsite and ran out of water. Took about 6 to get there, which was much longer then expected. We caught lots of Brooke trout on day one. Day 2 we hiked another few miles to our second lake. We heard a rumor that this lake might hold the elusive golden trout and we were not let down. I caught the biggest trout I’ve ever caught and it was a golden! All around it was an awesome trip and one of the hardest, most rewarding, and most beautiful hike I’ve ever done in the sierras. No catch and cook this time by next time we will be eating lots of trout. Come along and watch the journey. Let me know what you guys think!!

They were stocked in many high elevation lakes in the sierras back in the day. There are a bunch of lakes up there only have Goldens in them. This one may have been some sort of hybrid cause his colors weren’t super dark. Thanks for watching!

Goldens from the original Kern Plateau country we transplanted to hundreds of lakes up and down the range back in the 30's and 40's. The Sierra record back in the day was over 9 pounds (!!!!!!) out of Lake Virginia (the one on the Muir, an 11 mile hike out of Mammoth), not the Virginia lakes you can drive to off 395). Nothing anywhere near that big in that lake today- maybe a pound now and then. 2 pound goldens can still be found in some very remote lakes down on the Kern Plateau (where they evolved) and in the remote Kern Basin (in Sequoia Park), and also in Kings Canyon, but it's an expedition to get into them. Their original range was extremely limited (upper Golden Trout Creek (over Cottonwood Pass) and it s tributaries, such as Volcanp Creek, which evolved its own bright red variant due to then presence of reddish-colored lava - basalts in the stream bed). These natural goldens were transplanted by shepherds, cattlemen, and early-day fishermen to hundreds of formerly "barren" alpine lakes, where the apex predators were frogs. Because if that disruption to the natural ecosystem, he Golden Trout in alpine lakes are now quite controversial. They simply do not belong up there, as far as Nature is concerned. Fishermen love them- but frog lovers and biologists hate them. Of course, there are a lot more fishermen than frog lovers- but that does not make Golden Trout "right." Only Nature can determine what is right. If you don't care about doing the right thing- which would be to catch every remaining golden and eat it, thus wiping them out of the high country, then any golden over 11"- 12" should be released- they are that rare. By eating the "dinks" you thin out their overpopulated hordes and reduce the competition for food, making it possible for the bigger ones to find enough sparse natural food in these high lakes. And big trout can eat mire frogs than little trout. It's worth repeating that no trout of any kind were native to any truly High Sierra lakes except the goldens in Rocky Basin Lakes, a few tiny lakes at the headwaters of the Golden Trout Creek drainage. Some amphibians such as the yellow-legged frog have become nearly extinct due to this unnatural predation by "exotic" trout. The Park Service has been eliminating goldens, and all other species, from many lakes above 10.000,' to save the natural ecosystems of alpine lakes, which nature intended to be devoid of trout of any kind. As an avid hiking fisherman in my youth, I protested this movement , but as an old man reduced to watching these RUclips videos for my Sierra "fix," I have come to realize that when we tamper with any bit of nature, we tamper with all of it. I now take heart that the great John Muir himself was not a fisherman (although there were plenty of rainbows in the Merced and all other mid-elevation Sierra rivers), but he left them alone, despite the boredom of his own diet composed of nothing but bread, cheese, and tea. I totally understand the lure of golden trout, but I would encourage all true fishermen to do your own research into this controversy and come to understand what John Muir understood- that nature is never wrong, and that humans always are. The best thing to do with goldens now is to fish them out of the high lakes, and encourage their growth in only the Golden Trout Creek watershed above Volcano Falls. Currently, it's almost unheard of to catch a golden bigger than about 6" from this drainage, in part due to habitat degradation from a century of unregulated overgrazing by cattle, as well as intense overfishing with minimal enforcement of regulations. A world-class, catch-and-release golden fishery could be developed there, where Nature intended, all the way up to Rocky Basin Lakes, with intense enforcement by DFG wardens. Plus, catching big goldens from streams is far more exciting than lake fishing. Your thoughts?

Ha Ha, that was not a golden. Likely a mix of something with the larger rainbows that have been planted here and there. They are fat, it's surprising to catch them. Goldens will have a very bright red belly, and really yellow sides, and are typically 8 inches or so in a lake. I've hiked the whole JMT and the rivers and lakes along it have tons of them, they are not hard to find. Evolution Lake had lots, and would not bite my fly. EVERYTHING bites my flies, what the heck! lol

Also, you can tie flies and feel like a real fly fisherman, lol. Works for me. When you do catch a golden, they are indeed amazing. The faces are iridescent orange and yellow. I feel bad eating them, sort of.
