Hahah yes, I was so thankful she enjoyed this trip. It was our first of this caliber and our agreement was that we’d never have to do it again if she didn’t enjoy herself. Turns out, she loved it!
Thanks for the gear feedback. I’ll be including more details on the kind of gear I use in future videos. I’ve been in a stage of trying out multiple things so I’ve been wanting to make sure I love what I’m using before I recommend.
I will say the water filter I’ve used now on at least 7 trips, I really love. I’ll include a link below. My stove I also really love…but the company Snowpeak doesn’t make my model anymore for an unknown reason…I’m bummed.

Awesome video as expected! Just a friendly tip, if you manually close your reel bail it’ll last much longer. Also, look into some JDM minnow baits like the duo spearhead ryuki 50S, specifically anything gold. It’s similar to your rapala but it weighs about 5g is 5cm in length and specifically made for trout. That, and micro snaps so you can switch minnow baits or spoons easily on the fly. Anyhow, cheers man! On IG if you wanna chat about it haha

To be honest most is about your gear and I’ve wondered it since the first video I watched. Where do you get all that little gear? Foldable cooking and dinning stuff? The tent and so on? Can you drink that stream water straight or do you filter it. Also I want to say thank you for always mentioning Jesus in your videos! Keep it up!!

    • @UntilJourneysEnd
      @UntilJourneysEnd  2 года назад +1

      Great questions.
I’ve been trying to find a single “place” to get most of my gear from, but currently I have to go to a variety of stores to piece everything together.
My cooking stove was from the company Snowpeak. Unfortunately, they don’t make that version anymore which is a real bummer. You should definitely filter your water. Our water filters are from REI, but you can also get them from Amazon (I’ll include a link below).
Here are Amazon links to other gear that we used on this specific trip. I will say that besides my net and fishing reel, this was the first time we used this gear. So these items still haven’t passed my “durability and functionality” tests.

We had to acclimate just over 24hrs as our starting elevation was above 8,000. The trailhead was in the Mammoth area! I’ve made it a habit though not to post exact trailhead info on RUclips in order to preserve the “discovery” of these places for the people who want to find them (and to prevent a mass of tourists). It’s honestly no secret though and the best online map tool that I use for every trip I go on is this one from Steve Schalla. 👇🏻

Broooooo!!! You’re already on the right path! Discovering that you have a pull to get outside and go on adventure!!
      Do you have an REI
(camping/backpacking/outdoor store), or any other sporting goods store near you? I would recommend going there and find someone who knows the area you live and could recommend a first timer backpacking trail! It could be super short, 1-2miles one way, just to get your feet wet. REI even does guided backpacking trips if you’re down to spend the money.
      Download the app All Trails,
and then start looking around your area! That app logs regular trails and backpacking trails and lets people review the trail so that you can read how difficult people say it is.
You can even do a simple good search “backpacking trails near me”, and you’ll find tons of articles and blogs about trails in your area.
The biggest thing you need is someone who can show you what gear to buy and how to use the gear. It sounds daunting, but depending on how comfortable you feel, you can learn most of this on RUclips by simple searching “Tips for first time backpackers”.
Let me know if you have any other questions!!

I do. For that rare occasion that a black bear gets too curious about our food at camp and a good spray in the face will send him running to the hills. But, I’ve backpacked with folks who’ve camped in the mountains for decades and they always tell me that they don’t bring spray for the bears (because of how rare an aggressive encounter is), but because of those few weirdos (humans) whom you might encounter 10miles into the backcountry.

Haha this was 2nd time using a fly rod 😄
But hey, I still might benefit even now!

You need some work on your roll cast. You're straightening your arms too much and you need to only bring the rod back so your elbow is about ear height and then roll it out. It's more a snap of the wrist in the end of your presentation than extension of your whole arm. Awesome video tho!

Thanks man for the tip! I’ve practiced my roll cast a ton since this episode, getting a feel for it more and more!

@@UntilJourneysEnd Awesome to hear! Also, where is the trail head/start point for this hike? I want to do it with my daughter.

@baboonsass I don’t post the exact trailhead or body of water I fish here on RUclips in order to minimize a large influx of people to these areas, but also to preserve the “create your own adventure” mentality. But I’ll point you in the right direction! I use this resource (link below) before I leave for any trip! Steve Schalla gives you in depth info on every region of the Sierra Nevada and the fish that live there! (check out the Mammoth lakes area…)

Do your wife a favor and have her carry a smaller backpack than you. I can see you are just a newbie at backpacking. All that crap hanging on her backpack should go inside a 65L pack. The Eastern Sierra is a safe place to learn. Even 40 years ago when I rarely saw people, I experienced anything that a beginner could not handle. Later you need to come to Wyoming. 5lb cutthroat and Golden’s caught at 11,000 feet. Crazy weather, grizzlies, non existent trails, but the fishing will blow you away..
But get some sleeping bags that pack down. I have a Baltoro 95 I use in the snow and an 85 Liter for most other trips up to 7 days. Wife has a 65L Osphrey with everything going inside. Carrying weight too high or out away from your body adds stress on you.
Is that the Mammoth Mtn area?

Thanks man for the tips. We’ve learned since this trip, to try and put as much as we can in our packs due.
Wyoming is a must backpack/fish/hunting trip for me. It will undoubtedly happen one day 🙌🏻. You’re gettin me excited talking about it 😄
And yes this is the Mammoth area!
