Lancaster PA chinimg in. I have a 05 XC with the W button right next to the gear box. But I've never used it because my tires do all the work perfectly in harsh weather. XC70s turbos are the true standard of traction hands down.

Funny enough I think they just deleted the button on the P3 cars. The P2 cars had them as far as I know. I used it in my '06 S60 T5 for one of these Alabama snow storms that hit about once every 20 years and I was nigh unstoppable with only FWD and Continental tires. Was a great surprise, seeing how well it worked.

Yep, my two 850 T-5Rs and 96 850 GLT had Sport/Winter/Comfort mode switch for the transmission. My other 95 850 was manual... no such switch, you just started in third and it would be angry at you the whole time :p.
My 2006 S80 has a 'W' button, but no sport mode (which it REALLY needs, frankly). My 2019 XC90 T8 has "Constant AWD" which will turn into winter mode seemingly on its own - maybe temperature based. I use AWD all the time in it for rainy days or just to warm the engine without the twitchy throttle of 'Power' mode... but now that it's snowy and iced down here in Texas the throttle response pulled WAY back in AWD mode... I have more aggressive acceleration using Pure electric mode, which is usually the slowest accelerating mode.. but now I can do donuts with it, LOL!

The P3-platform the later/newer Volvos are based upon, is *_Ford's_*_ Class-D platform_ (Ford S-Max, Galaxy) and really has no bearing with Volvo's former P2-platform.
The engineers did a great job in shoving out Ford' Focus (and others) as Volvos in disguise. Either way, the last true Volvos where based upon _Volvo's _*_own_*_ P2-platform_ …

I have Volvo 960 executive and I can choose economy, sport with W winter mode on which is crazy but not when you think about it
Economy and Sport just tell the computer the fuel, air and ignition mapping while winter just drives the transmission in 3 or 4 gear for lesser torque so you won't get stuck.

    • @jsco8692
      @jsco8692 3 года назад +1

Actually less torque. Lower gears are like a longer lever, more torque. Launch your car is first and the multiplied torque throws you back. Do it in 3rd no ooomph and like plowing through mash potatoes. W mode lessens the torque for more delicate movements on slippery. Sport mode beyond fuel and ignition tweaks holds gears in longer and usually faster shifting for performance driving. 1st gear gear ratio 4.171 Tw [Nm]tq-1082.37 Fw [N]tq-3186.73
      3rd gear gear ration 1.521 Tw [Nm]tq-394.70 Fw [N]tq-1162.08
Great reduction of torque in 3rd. These are not Volvo ratios, but you get the gist.

    • @Backs4more
      @Backs4more 3 года назад +2

@@IcyMike5.7 Volvo have a Winter mode, they honestly do not have a "wet" mode. It does not reduce power, it starts the vehicle in 3rd gear.
      "Geartronic - Winter mode
It can be easier to pull away on slippery roads
if 3rd gear is engaged manually.
      1. Depress the brake pedal and move the
gear lever from the D position to the end
position at +/- - the instrument panel display shifts the indication from D to the figure 1.
      2. Scroll up to gear 3 by pushing the lever
forward towards + (plus) twice - the display
shifts the indication from 1 to 3.
      3. Release the brake and accelerate carefully.
The gearbox "winter mode" means that the car
moves off with a lower engine speed and
reduced engine power on the drive wheels."
That is from a 2009 owners manual relating to the car in the video.
But back to "Modes". Here is a description of the push button version,
      "W - Winter
The W button by the gear selector
engages and disengages the winter programme W. The symbol W
is shown in the combined instrument panel when the winter programme is activated.
The winter programme starts the gearbox in
3rd gear to make it easier to pull off on slippery
roads. When the programme is engaged, lower
gears are activated only by kick-down.
The W programme can only be selected in
      position D."
