One is literally people you know, from the same nation, and more so have been through training and fought together which bonds you strongly. The situation in Afghanistan is more complicated than he thinks so the "we should all join the Taliban because they're always happy" argument does not hold but the part about only feeling sad about deaths (or bad events in general) within your own group and killing (or other actions intended to hurt someone) not being any less bad if you're killing someone not in your social group makes sense.
