Great review! I've had my '21 PAS for almost 3 years now, and 38k miles later, probably the best bike I've owned, and I've owned a lot. Absolutely love it!
Great to watch a positive video about the pan america. Best bike I've ever owned. For a bit of fun on the roads I made my own riding mode. Copy sport, throttle response on max, engine breaking on max and suspension setting on road mode which I think is the comfortable setting. For the twisties I do everything the same but suspension set up on sport. Its really fun. I've only done bumpy tracks but I'd like to attempt more off road riding, I live in Spain and hope to ride to Morocco and reach the Sahara, have a little play about in the sand with the pan america and head back home. Thanks for the video
Thats so awesome that mapping mode sounds like what I need to do! I will program the same into mode B, cheers for the tip! You must have some great places to ride, I visited Sierra Nevada in 2000 for the MTB World Champs, then a day in Malaga, loved Spain and its people.
I have the exact same custom map made on my pan! Love it! Since my brother lives in spain I hope to ride to your country this or next year from Belgium! Ride on!
I rode it for 6 months before realising we were setting off on rides with the wrong setting, as soon as the penny dropped, it was sooo much better again!
37,000 kms on my 21. Heaps of problems until replaced starter clutch under warranty (as were 2 exhaust headers). Had to replace clutch plates recently. Love the suspension and power in sport mode. Rode around Australia
Wow that is awesome1 I forgot to mention HD are replacing the starter clutch next week, has never caused an issue just makes the weird noise every now and again. I was talking to Ferg at Gasoline Alley about letting this bike run up in the km's so we can show how good, or bad they are! My clutch is a bit grabby on first take off, so I slip it a few times while stationary to get some oil between the plates.
Really glad to see positive reviews! I love the Bike, never regretted buying it! Now I should teach myself to ride it offroad more :) Love your videos! Keep up the good work! greetings from Belgium
Cheers I am always happy when viewers say they enjoy my vids! Thats awesome you are in Belgium watching my very Aussie videos! Yes unfortunately there are a lot of negative comments floating around on the internet about the Pan Am, but I think those people will complain about any bike, I love my Pan Am, and I enjoy sharing the passion. Welcome to my channel, theres a few videos up I have on my channel that will help with getting your wheels dirty, Have fun!
I had a KLR650 for 10 years and ran a 18x2.5 on the front. The bike felt like a 250, but did I get criticism! I agree with your comments on wheel size. I ran the 18 only because of tyre selection, but now would choose the 19x2.5. Top review. Thanks for posting.
Yes agree and you just have to ignore the voices to a degree! I think the 21 is great for what its designed for, mx and enduro, its no good on the road. Thanks for the comment!
Great content. The Harley Davidson Pan Am is a great bike. I took mine out this afternoon in the freezing cold just because I had to get a ride in. It wasn’t far but it got my blood going a little bit. Your content and advice is appreciated.
Thats awesome! Yep sometimes a 10 minute hit out to around town is all I need! Enjoy the bike, I will try to punch out some good vids this year, thanks for tuning in!
Agree with everything you said. I love my Pan America, the power is amazing. The adjustability through the different ride modes and the custom moves gives you so much more flexibility and adaptability to the way you want to ride. Haven't gotten it off road yet, looking forward to that in the Spring/Summer. Cheers mate!
2023 model has made quite a few improvements - and reliability is steadily improving (wind shield holder, heat shield, cable route etc). I'm hoping that 2024 model is better. HOWEVER - kick stand NEEDS WORK! And TFT screen needs bigger font!
All right now. You've got my attention. I'm absolutely looking at the V strom 800. I love that yellow bike. But now. I've subscribed. Nice video. Thanks. The fender extensions the racks, frame upgrades, heat protection, shifter, electronics, So cool. Wow. Thanks for this.
Watched this a second time - really helpful. I'm in Europe atm and need a bike that can do highways well (130+ kinda stuff for hours), bendy alpine roads and can be taken down the (usually easy) TET tracks and roads. I know your perspective - and skill level - so this has been a great review....I'm gonna get me a Harley. and send the Tuareg back to aus for adventures there. 👍
Great review Mal! Got mine as soon as they were released and it’s been flawless! I love it! Never out of sports mode. Complete exhilaration! Writing this from Warrnambool after a 2 day ride, haven’t been off it since I arrived and can’t wait it to get back on it for the ride home! Never have regretted buying it, but quickly tempered that sense of loss of not having the cruiser and bought a BMW R18B Bagger! Completely different bike of course, but I love what both companies have done with these incumbents into traditional markets!
Ah that's awesome thanks for the great comment! Yeah I'd love to add a big fat cruiser to the shed! New house build this year but it will be on the list! All the best!
I owned one for about 3 months. I loved it! I wish I could have kept it. The Pan America was going to be my secondary bike to ride alone and going places I wouldn’t go on my Ultra Limited. Unfortunately, a financial setback (home repairs came up suddenly) caused me to need to sale the bike. If I can ever get back to where I was financially before I will own another. I won’t sale my Ultra Limited. That’s the bike I use for touring the country with my wife, 2-up.
Bummer you had to sell, but life throws crap at you from time to time, I'm sure there is one on the shopping list in the future! Wifey loves the 2 up days when we get out, cheers!
Great Vid Mal, very detailed. I’m having a blast on my Pan Am, coming from a Street Glide. I wasn’t sure if I made the right choice but now that I’ve owned it for a while, she’s just heaps of fun😎🇳🇿
It really is the bike to do everything on! I would love a Street Glide or similiar as a toy, I am going to borrow one for a few days from Gasoline Alley and shoot a 2 day vid travelling out west, as soon as this summer heat is gone I will go do it. Enjoy the PA mate thanks for the comment.
I lost that same shifter bolt riding out sport riding. Thats a great tip to adjust the sag. I had no idea thats how it workd. Still not alot of infomation on all the in's and out, so I really appreciate the wya you and the community is sharing. I eneded up doing less offroad then I did with other bikes, and this is an amazing street maching. Love watching you're adventures. Happy New Year and Ride Safe.
Glad it helped, yep only figured that out a few weeks ago! Made a big difference when 2 up. My videos are creating good conversation about the PA which is awesome! Cheers.
So glad I stumbled on to your vid…I’ve been on the fence w the Pan due to starting issues., amongst others. Did you have any where the bike just wouldn’t start at all? If so, did they resolve it..thanks and outstanding review and info!
I ran the battery flat and it wouldn't start once, but never had any issues with the bike not starting. I have had some fun on this bike! Once I fitted a slightly stronger battery, and HD replaced the starter clutch under warranty, it made a bit of noise, the bike has been awesome. Good luck if you get one they are such a badass motorcycle!
A great review by an owner, and what it was like to actually live with the bike. I didn’t see you mention engine heat on the bike? Part of the reason I ended up with BMW GSA, a non issue for me with the boxer, as dealt with Harley’s and right side engine heat - I always fought on my Road Glides. But to each his own…really want the PanAm to succeed and continue to improve. Next time around will for sure compare again, as had HDs for a long time. Be nice to be able to pu another one. And trust it. Continued good luck with yours!
I didnt mention it as I have never been effected by it, however, when I rode the Harley Classic in Bali, holy crap that thing thre out some heat! I have never really noticed any heat that has bothered me off the PA, I guess maybe because I rode 450 mx bikes, which get real hot, the big bike doesn't bother me. I have heard guys complain about heat near their ankle on the PA, even after losing the heat shield never noticed. Oh I did burn a boot when I sat my feet up on the crash bars on a long ride and it slipped down onto the header!
Mal did you see there’s a Pan America racing the Africa Eco Race Monaco to Dakar at the moment. Don’t know how it’s doing but the same rider finished the 1000 Dunas Rally in Spain this year on a stock Pan America. Only set up change was putting off road tires on it
@@oldmanspeedadventures Mal, They did not touch the suspension. The only changes were tires, moving the display up a couple inches for the GPS race system, and a spare fuel tank that fits in place of the rear seat pad. Nothing else was changed! Insanely good rider.
Great review. I'm looking at this, the new BMW R1300GS, and Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. I currently ride a BMW K1600GTL and love the tech. We'll see.
Kia Ora Mal spot on with your review I’m waiting on a 2024 PanAmerica should be here end of the month Will be my third PanAmerica and one of five Harley’s I own By far my favourite of all,Power handling and the ride is 💯 The 2023 failed at 3000km dropped a valve and same as you I have a great dealer gave me a demo and ordered me the 2024 at no charge Here in Northern Ontario Canada service and network of dealers across the country keeps me loyal Thanks for sharing great to hear your review 🇨🇦🇳🇿🇦🇺✊🏾🤙🏾
Thats a bummer about the failure, but sh!t happens with any bike from time to time. Its great they have looked after you. Mate I bet you have some awesome ride places both in Canada and home in NZ, all the best.
Oh definitely on the introduction of anything new shit definitely happens Living full time in Canada and yes the riding is spectacular Just new to the adventure market hope to get some videos up this year of some rides Cheers mate ✊🏾
Good to see folks enjoying theirs. My 22 PAS is garbage. In and out of the shop for electrical issues with cruise control and fueling. Bike has died on me while riding 2X. Bad battery and bad wiring harness. No confidence in the bike at all. First and last Harley. Unfortunately.
Had a 21 PA. Loved the ride. Unfortunately, the dealer I purchased it from dropped it the day I bought it, then ripped the locking cylinders out of the sport cases. The next dealer couldnt get the parts for a very long time and then didn't install them correctly and they didn't work. The fuel pump went out at 6k. Dealer 2 sat on their hands and didnt order it for 2 months. Finally, I refused to leave until they purchased one from a dealer the next state over. Meanwhile, my PA wouldn't start due to another issue- battery related. I was told a software update would fix it but dealer 2 gave me aches and pains to get that done. I finally switched to dealer 3 and they updated the software, fixed a bad connectir causing some of the starting issues. I personally put a lithium ion battery in which solved my starting issues. Then the bike began to overheat and stall while going 65mph in 50 degree Fahrenheit. Went back and for with dealer 3 who really tried hard to fix it. Then the chain and guides began to wear extra quickly and i needed new tires. Dealer 3 took care of me but I had to return multiple times for the stalling issues and the new chain kept loosening after 50 miles. Eventually, i gave up, sold the bike to dealer 3 and bought a Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. I've put 15k miles on it in 7 months with zero issues. The mothership did nothing other than point me to the dealer throughout the process. Never again. Really wish it wasnt the case bc the Pan Am really was the best ride when it was working. Guess I've turned redcoat due to all the issues🤷♂️
holy cow that bike certainly was a dud! That is such a shame you never got to enjoy the bike for what it should deliver, bummed for you and having to deal with all that headache! Tigers are a great bike, would be high on my list if replacing.
I've been riding my PA for over a year now. Been up to the Cape and back from Gold Coast. Been on quite a few bikes but it's the PA that I'm in love with! Never had a single issue until now and have 15000,km's on the bike already. Definitely a keeper!!!
Interesting comments. I've had my Pan Am since March 2023, only done 9,500km, mostly sealed roads, and I've done similar mods. I'm happy with the bike and have only had minor problems. I tried the fork lift, it does make dirt riding better, but I found it makes the front not feel as precise when on mountain roads, so for that I lift the forks up. I really like the modes. I use Sports power on them all, and max engine breaking (there are 5 settings), throttle on base response, then I vary the suspension, ABS and TC, with A as Sports, B as Balanced, and the Dirt one as a soft dirt suspension. I would like to change the exhaust, but the Dealer keeps telling me the warrantee would be void, I keep thinking "Do you expect something to go wrong?"
Nice, thanks for the great feedback! Great bikes, I will do some more vids soon, I'll go shoot some off road stuff and rider tips. Yes the front end helps with stability off road, especially dirt roads over 60mph /100kmhr. I got used to a bit more input on the bitumen with the fork position. I'm doing a track day soon with slicks! That will be fun, and of course a good video topic!
@@oldmanspeedadventures I checked out getting on the bike before turning it on, to get it to settle, and you know, it makes it ride so much better. Before I was getting on after starting and it must have been dropping the back a bit more than the normal sag amount, because starting it after made it steer quicker. I'm 125kg with gear on, would have been increasing the rake on the front. Will be interesting to see how you go on the track day, I think the bike is fantastic with the sports suspension setting and in the mountains, haven't done a track day yet, but I would like to. I use to do classic racing for a while, and my riding back ground is definitely more sports than touring or dirt.
Great positive review from an owner with his own money in the game. Never ridden the new bikes, but, have ridden the old Harley dirt bikes of many years ago.
Good review! I am very stoked about my 2023 RA1250S ; fabulous bike, Harley-Davidson has hit it out of the park with this one... um, yes, a baseball reference. marcus
Great video! I appreciate the information and love all your modifications especially the adjustable folding(spring loaded) foot shifter. All the rock guards as well. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to future posts. From Canada 🇨🇦
I’m sooo confused, looking at one of these or the Low Rider S. Totally different I know but originally looked at a GS1250. Just picked up a Nightster Special for my wife, both of us love it. Not interested in going off road so would be solely local and highways. Harley bikes are sooo good. Thank you for your vid mate.
Had a 21 lrs 114..only issue I had w it was it came w a short mono shock but now the 24’s come w the heritage shock which is much better on the back…I’d still go w the Pan though
The bike has crazy power in sport. I wish the bike felt more polished and reliable. I totally agree about the sag feature. It is a game changer for adventure bikes. Hopefully harley will allow custom adjustments to everything through the interface similar to your custom offroad mode. I havent spent enough time with one to know.
100% best bike. Just did a camping trip 2500km in Kosciusko NP with the wife on the back, bike handling is superior on and off the black stuff. Bike in getting its 8000k service and main wire harness replaced now.
@@oldmanspeedadventures The bike wouldn’t take the software update last year so it was diagnosed as faulty. Apparently pretty common in the 2021 models
I will be doing a tyre review on these next week, yes they are shot, I did the Redemption Ride video to the desert, 4500km trip, raced a speedway event on them as well! So yes as seen on the bike I got 7000km plus out of them, still a way to go to the tyre indicators, next tyre Im going for the Dunlop TrailMax Raid.
I am seeing 21 Pan Am’s coming up for sale at $12,000. It is tempting because they feel almost every single one of the checks on my list but honestly they’re a liability issues are just a dealbreaker. If I wanted to buy another bike, that would leave me stranded and require a 300 mile tow followed by a two week wait for the repair under warranty. I’d buy another BMW R1200 GS.
I think all the modern bikes with electronics have issues, you always just hear all the bad news and people like to rubbish a brand that is different. I love mine, I ride it hard, it goes great and I havent had any issues that HD have not taken care of for free. But you just gotta go with what you feel is right for you.
@oldmanspeedadventures great to hear! It would eventually fail, but takes a while, the noise is a nuisance though. Keep up the videos. I'm enjoying my PA.
What's it weigh like 1000 lbs?my dr 650 will ride circles around it in the woods, my fjr will ride circles around it on the highway,if I'm going off somewhere to ride both highways and trails the toy hauler works wonders!
@billbonu1639 You're comparing apples with oranges. Of course 2 very specific types of bike will be better at what they are designed for than one multi purpose bike. There are bikes that will ride circles around both your DR650 and FJR. But that's not the point of a large adventure touring bike or the video
In my opinion as an A class MXer. Riding dirt for over 40 years, street 20 years. Ride all my bikes 16k plus miles a year. Owned the Africa, Tenere 7, multiple Katooms both 4 and 2 stroke believe from experience the 19" wheel is better for heavier bikes 530lbs plus. The 21" wheel is way better overall in the sand especially at higher speeds of 40 plus mph. I personally don't like to feel my front tire floating, I want it to feel planted
I didn't like the imbalance of tyre width. Referring mainly to road use. Bike was fine in the desert sand sitting on 70mph. As long as we are having a good time roll on!
Nice honest review. I was a little surprised you hadn't gone with barkbusters given your go anywhere riding style. Where did you get the mudguard extenders from? cheers
Not a fan of barkbusters I've seen guys get they're arms stuck. The plastic ones are fine once modified. Umm I think the mudguards bits were all on Aliexpress
Continental TKC80. Yep the skid plate has been hit a few times, it does its intended job, bolts under the motor in 4 spots then 2 spots on the front, so 6 mounting points should do, and seems to distribute the load of any hits.
While the engine is great, I had numerous electrical problems-no start issues, front ABS problem where the front wheel would lock up and a fuel pump which imploded at 15,000 miles. I traded it for a Street Bob which is a basic bike without all the electrical problems. I hope that Harley Davidson can ultimately fix all of bugs with this engine and its electronics.
I have a 22’ with 17,500ish miles! I’ve had a few glitches that were solved and a couple fuel that failed!! It’s still the best bike I’ve ever owned! It’s a new platform so you have to go in with that mind set that there will be issues and problems! All newer bikes have issues BMW,Triumph have software issues, engine failure, driveshaft snapping! I chose HD for the dealership access because theirs a dealership every you look (USA) I had a bmw R18 and bmw didn’t even sell a repair manual for it! $1200 for a 6,000 mile service where it was a 2-3 month wait to get the service! ! No thanks !
agree 100% all bikes have the issues, unfortunately you only hear the bad stories. Great motorcycle, creates a conversation wherever you go, the pure muscle bike of the adv world! Ride on!
I think about a swap from my 2023 RKS to this. I only sat on it and find you sit far away from the handlebar? I'm 6'2" ?! Do you have had batterie issues? No electronic problems? I hear the corner lights are flashing and looks you want to hurry up the cars in front of you... I go to make a spin on a 2021 with 3000K's on it this weekend. Tnxs for your toughts
I'm 6'3" I have fitted a lowered footpeg and extended shift lever, I run the seat in the high position and roll the bars back slightly, I feel the reach is comfortable. I messed around with risers and different bars but found stock is best. Yes my stock battery died at about 12000km replaced with a slightly stronger battery had no issues. They are an awesome bike, so much enjoyment and riding pleasure! Enjoy if you decide to join the cool club on the Pan Am! I still love it
I owned one for two years. Tried to like it, learned to hate it. The biggest problem was the dreaded starter clutch which left me stranded far from home a few times. My enthusiasm never recovered from that. I couldn't scrape it off my shoe fast enough.
Yes, the starter clutch was eventually fixed after a long odyssey that began at the original clownish dealership and ended a year and a half later at a much better dealership in Rahway, NJ. Goes to show how a dealership run by buffoons can really drive away customers and sour the experience. On the bright side, I found a superior service department and a '23 Low Rider ST @@oldmanspeedadventures
@@larryboody6737 I think your right it's the dealership I'm so lucky I have a good one to take care of me, if I was stuffed around I'd be feeling the same way I'm sure
Possibly yeah I also think Triumph are doing it on the big bike, perhaps we can thank Citroen from the 70's! Hope all is well Arch, hey your bike park area at home seems quite large, no helmet needed, no low hanging cupboards!
All is well Mal mate 🙏 the parking is a shared parking with about 40 other bikies and about a 15 minute walk from my little apartment #bumpedmyheadagain 😂😂
Now own a PA and a GS - after riding both in varied conditions my go to is the PA. Don't get me wrong, the GS is a great ride but I find the PA inspires more confidence (especially off road) and is an amazingly fun ride to boot.
thats awesome you get to ride one against the other, its the rawness and bruteness of the PA I really enjoy, its a muscle bike of the adventure bike world! Enjoy the ride!
Thankyou, I have heard of some cold start issues with batteries, I forgot to mention I had a battery failure at about 10,000km, I replaced it with a stronger cranking unit, no issues for me but maybe do some research. All the best! I bet its cold there right now! All the best!
With the adjustable height seat and the ride height that drops when stopping its pretty good, just go to a dealer and get them to demo the variable ride height feature, it drops 2 inches when you stop and start off. Great feature on the Special models.
Update. I ride 15min with the PA today. It's a hell of a machine, but not for me! It's fast, brakes well, suspension perfect. But. Legs are cramped and positioned to high. The real power comes in above 6000rpm. When you used to cubic inches and torque starting from 2000rpm,....there s no way back...
Battery did die I forgot to mention this, but it died at about 12,000km and I replaced it, no issues since. I put a bit stronger battery in, non lithium.
@@oldmanspeedadventures 👍 I wish the MOCO all the best. I still have an Ultra Classic with all of my ADV and dual sport bikes, with no plans to ever get rid of it.
Hey man! I currently own a 2023 Sportster S and I’ve been looking into trading her to the Pan Am Special. I’m 28 yrs old and I used to do mountain biking but due to life and school i put that on hold. I’m a lot more free now and wanted to get opinions on if this is a good move. I love the Sportster S but I also miss the dirt road and camping man
You should be able to test ride one, you wont regret it! If your in SEQ Gasoline Alley are more than happy to roll out the demo bike for a test ride. Seriously you will love chasing dirt roads, mtb on steroids! Let me know what you decide on!
Out of all the tyres I have tried the Continental have been awesome on the road, no noise or vibration, unlike some other big branded tyres. I am going to try the Dunlop Trailmax Raid next I think. In regards to handling I dont push it real hard on the road, but my mate Ferg fron Gasoline Alley is a road guy, he has told me how hard he can push these tyres!
Please allow me to ask both of you a question about the HD Pan America (“HD PA”) & please forgive my wordiness in attempting to be precise about my issue. Shopping for another bike in my mid 50s, I’m fortunate to have experience riding everything from dirt bikes, sport bikes, V-twin cruisers, sport touring & full touring. What I’ve always loved about Harleys is how the rubber mounted engines make the bikes “glide” from about 40 mph & up. At my age I’ve decided that vibration at low speeds is fine but when putting on the miles at 50-90 mph I really need the bike to be exceptionally smooth instead of great bikes like the Yamaha FJR & many other bikes that “buzz” as speed & rpms increase. I even loved the Buell Ulysses rubber mounted 1200 engine for duplicating that Harley glide feeling but the short wheel base makes it a bike that can bite the rider. I’m really hoping the HD PA engine is rubber mounted to duplicate that awesome glide & forums mention the engine mounts. BUT when I looked into the HD PA some sources say that it’s not rubber mounted but rather incorporated into the structure of the frame. Buells did the same & still kept that great rubber mounted glide feeling. So the big question is: Does the HD PA rubber mount the engine to give the rider that “glide” smoothness at road speeds? If not, how smooth is this bike? Is it glass smooth or does the vibration increase with speed? Thank you in advance for any advice you can both offer. 🙏 👍
@@88RealMan88 Thank you. Yes I’m definitely going to test ride one. It appears that engineers at Harley knew their reputation was on the line. It reminds me of how Japanese auto makers proved durability with models built in the 1970s that influenced Americans to purchase their new models in the 1980s & 90s. Harley wants these bikes looking & running well 20 years from now. I’m also interested in how it rides 2 up.
Thank you..i was thinking to buy one i found..so i came to RUclips..you are the 1st i saw...and i like everything you did...wish you a pleasant rider...be safe ...Subscribed 💐🤍👏🏻👌🏻
@@oldmanspeedadventures my budget allows me to go for a KTM 1290 at this stage, so have really enjoyed your previous vids as well. I’m 6 foot 4 and just found I feel super comfortable with the bike. What’s the chances Reece trades the sportster for Harley Pan soon…..😜 See ya round mate.
Harley had a ride day a couple years ago at the annual ADV rally Julian california. Harley brought like 20 bikes and I did ride one. I did NOT like it. I felt bad about dropping it and it was a bitch to get back up lol. but when I got back I noticed literally EVERY bike had LOTS of evidence of being dropped lol....ALL of em! So I mean it is no dirt bike IMHO and on the highway? The bike just did not feel good to me at all....and it did not seem like it has 150hp but I recon it is all at the top. Bottom line? NOT for me PERIOD
theres a few getting around now with higher kms on them, yeah lets see over time how they stand up, I will run the km up on mine for sure to see how they go.
Great review! I've had my '21 PAS for almost 3 years now, and 38k miles later, probably the best bike I've owned, and I've owned a lot. Absolutely love it!
Couldn't agree more! 38000km nice, I will run mine high up into the ks as well I reckon
Ride on!
@thorstren I'm in the Tarragona region and if you're passing and want to ride some great places let me know
Always love an honest review. Keep it up Mal.
Hi. Did recommend this bike for new biker
Good review. I absolutely love my ‘22. You’re spot on, so much fun on and off road. So capable.
Pretty much sums it up! Like comparing a GT Mustang to a Range Rover, give me the Mustang!
Mal, thanks for the ‘sag’ tip - love the no bullshit commentary. Alan
All bikes have needed repairs sooner or later..!! 37,000 ya makes sense needed repairs.
Really glad to see positive reviews! I love the Bike, never regretted buying it! Now I should teach myself to ride it offroad more :)
Love your videos!
I hear a rumour they will be bringing out a mid-size version of this bike soon, sounds right up my alley.
oh wow that would be a real hit!
Like you, I really like my PAm, certainly is an exciting bike to ride and it continues to raise interest and qustions wherever I go.

Yeah you will smile off road, great low centre of gravity makes it work well in the dirt!
2023 model has made quite a few improvements - and reliability is steadily improving (wind shield holder, heat shield, cable route etc). I'm hoping that 2024 model is better. HOWEVER - kick stand NEEDS WORK! And TFT screen needs bigger font!
Yes agree on the last 2 100%!
All right now. You've got my attention. I'm absolutely looking at the V strom 800. I love that yellow bike. But now. I've subscribed. Nice video. Thanks. The fender extensions the racks, frame upgrades, heat protection, shifter, electronics, So cool. Wow. Thanks for this.
No worries, yeah the vstrom, a Tiger 900, but the vstrom seams good value. But for now the Sherman tank will do me!
Mate I’m very much looking 👀 forward to getting my pan America in about 3 months can’t wait 👍
Thats so awesome! Enjoy the bike when you get it.
Great bike for doing 130!
I will shoot a living with the Pan Am for a year vid soon, oh and I still love mine! Enjoy!!
Thanks Mal, excellent review, love watching your videos and please keep them coming !
Cheers thanks for watching, I have some good things planned for 24!
Had you bought a KLR you'd have your home repaired and still have a KLR :)
@@stefanpuffer Could be.
Great Vid Mal, very detailed. I’m having a blast on my Pan Am, coming from a Street Glide. I wasn’t sure if I made the right choice but now that I’ve owned it for a while, she’s just heaps of fun😎🇳🇿
thats a big change for sure
@@oldmanspeedadventures one older gentleman to another, really appreciate your info..gives me confidence in choosing the dirt glide..🤙🏽
I'd love one but I spent all my money on a tractor and new shed 😔 so I'll have to stick to old faithful / V-strom 650
Priorities in order right there! Unless you can adapt a PTO onto the HD perhaps! Hey well you need the shed when you do buy one!
Mal did you see there’s a Pan America racing the Africa Eco Race Monaco to Dakar at the moment. Don’t know how it’s doing but the same rider finished the 1000 Dunas Rally in Spain this year on a stock Pan America. Only set up change was putting off road tires on it

I saw the first vid, so badass, pretty much shows a good rider will get this bike pretty much anywhere. I wonder if they slid the forks down?
@@oldmanspeedadventures Mal, They did not touch the suspension. The only changes were tires, moving the display up a couple inches for the GPS race system, and a spare fuel tank that fits in place of the rear seat pad. Nothing else was changed! Insanely good rider.
I hope they come out with a smaller one. I test rode it and liked it but just can't afford one.
yeah a 900 would be badass
Great review. I'm looking at this, the new BMW R1300GS, and Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. I currently ride a BMW K1600GTL and love the tech. We'll see.
Think of this as the muscle bike. Like a GT Mustang!!

Yeah bummer, like any bike there's good and bad stories, I will hang onto this for a while
Had a 21 PA.
Very cool! Its awesome to ride something different!

Yeah cheers, its funny how people overlook the dirt heritage of HD, I was a fan from the On Any Sunday Mert Lawill days!

Welcome aboard mate glad you enjoy the vid. More coming been a bit slack lately. All the best
Very cool bike just keep road tyres on it what a weapon! Great engine
Had a 21 lrs 114..only issue I had w it was it came w a short mono shock but now the 24’s come w the heritage shock which is much better on the back…I’d still go w the Pan though

shoulda bought a GS lol ...IMHO
The bike has crazy power in sport. I wish the bike felt more polished and reliable. I totally agree about the sag feature. It is a game changer for adventure bikes. Hopefully harley will allow custom adjustments to everything through the interface similar to your custom offroad mode. I havent spent enough time with one to know.

100% best bike. Just did a camping trip 2500km in Kosciusko NP with the wife on the back, bike handling is superior on and off the black stuff. Bike in getting its 8000k service and main wire harness replaced now.

The bike wouldn’t take the software update last year so it was diagnosed as faulty. Apparently pretty common in the 2021 models
@@sticksnstones5695 oh ok.
I love my 22, nothing but fun every ride. The power is overkill and you're right about the suspension, it works and really really well. Ride safe!
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks for the honest review Mal.
Your welcome Clive!
Your tires are well shot! As soon as the knobs are different lengths it’s time to replace them. TKC only last about 3k miles if you’re lucky.
Good video, couldn't agree more. Did you get your starter clutch fixed?
Its actually booked in this week under warranty, I forgot to mention it. It hasnt caused me any issues but they are swapping it out free of charge.
@oldmanspeedadventures great to hear! It would eventually fail, but takes a while, the noise is a nuisance though. Keep up the videos. I'm enjoying my PA.
I thought I seen a video with a double spring setup for jiffy stand. Was that you and where can I buy one?
no sorry but sounds great if you find it let me know!

What's it weigh like 1000 lbs?my dr 650 will ride circles around it in the woods, my fjr will ride circles around it on the highway,if I'm going off somewhere to ride both highways and trails the toy hauler works wonders!
Haha whatever bro it's a fun bike to ride. I'm a pro mx and off road racer having some fun, enjoy the vids have a great day
Horses for courses. I like big long adventure rides, like my Big Red Redemption series, no toy hauler needed.

I also want to add that the 19" is more stable at higher speeds (60+mph) on the road than a knobby 21"
I didn't like the imbalance of tyre width. Referring mainly to road use. Bike was fine in the desert sand sitting on 70mph. As long as we are having a good time roll on!
Hey Thomo, sounds like you’ve got a brilliant bike!!!
What say you we go chase down some OMS stickers?
Go get some pics with my stickers I will send some out!
Nice honest review. I was a little surprised you hadn't gone with barkbusters given your go anywhere riding style. Where did you get the mudguard extenders from? cheers
Not a fan of barkbusters I've seen guys get they're arms stuck. The plastic ones are fine once modified. Umm I think the mudguards bits were all on Aliexpress
what tires are you running. Are you happy with the skid guard as it bolts direct to motor?
Continental TKC80. Yep the skid plate has been hit a few times, it does its intended job, bolts under the motor in 4 spots then 2 spots on the front, so 6 mounting points should do, and seems to distribute the load of any hits.
While the engine is great, I had numerous electrical problems-no start issues, front ABS problem where the front wheel would lock up and a fuel pump which imploded at 15,000 miles. I traded it for a Street Bob which is a basic bike without all the electrical problems. I hope that Harley Davidson can ultimately fix all of bugs with this engine and its electronics.
I would love to see a dumbed down version, less technology
I have a 22’ with 17,500ish miles! I’ve had a few glitches that were solved and a couple fuel that failed!! It’s still the best bike I’ve ever owned!
It’s a new platform so you have to go in with that mind set that there will be issues and problems!
All newer bikes have issues BMW,Triumph have software issues, engine failure, driveshaft snapping!
I chose HD for the dealership access because theirs a dealership every you look (USA)
I had a bmw R18 and bmw didn’t even sell a repair manual for it!
I still love it
Great review and thank you so much for all of the in-depth information.
Thankyou appreciate it!
I owned one for two years. Tried to like it, learned to hate it. The biggest problem was the dreaded starter clutch which left me stranded far from home a few times. My enthusiasm never recovered from that. I couldn't scrape it off my shoe fast enough.
What a bummer for you that's a crappy experience. HD replaced my starter clutch under warranty it never caused any issue but it was a bit noisy.
Yes, the starter clutch was eventually fixed after a long odyssey that began at the original clownish dealership and ended a year and a half later at a much better dealership in Rahway, NJ. Goes to show how a dealership run by buffoons can really drive away customers and sour the experience.

@r.williamcomm7693 you should arrange test ride for yor self . In my opinion - this bike is one of the best models in production.
Thanks!
I'm doing a "living with the bike for 12 months" video this week, stay tuned
Awesome video as always mate.
Glad you enjoyed it, just a quick thrown up vid to let everyone know what I actually think, the V8 of adventure bikes!
@@oldmanspeedadventures my budget allows me to go for a KTM 1290 at this stage, so have really enjoyed your previous vids as well.
I’m 6 foot 4 and just found I feel super comfortable with the bike. What’s the chances Reece trades the sportster for Harley Pan soon…..😜
See ya round mate.
The new Royal Enfield Himalayan?
I would look like a preying mantis on that!
Cool. I dig it.
Ich finde sie so schön. Wäre ein echter Luftgekühlter Motor verbaut, hätte ich mir sie gekauft.
Yes I would love a simplified model of this bike, thanks for watching!
Great review.. unlike me I'm a very one eyed Yamaha guy so I could never be as honest 😂 but .. a + for effort.
The beauty of owning the bike I can say whatever I want, and, I too am a Yamaha guy just bought a 22 yz250 2 stroke vid coming soon.
Longevity will be interesting
theres a few getting around now with higher kms on them, yeah lets see over time how they stand up, I will run the km up on mine for sure to see how they go.
When are you going to update to the GS1300? You look like a BMW man.
