Thank you, Michael, for sharing these tips! I’m about a year late lol. I’ll definitely put these to use and now I can go back to older images to improve on them. As I was watching the vlog I was already thinking about which images I can rework. I love that the tone curve is a masking option, and I agree that it would be great to have the HSL sliders in that arsenal as well. Thanks again!
Great concise video and really nice images Michael - thank you! Who else wants to go back a decade or two and re/edit images each time the tools update?
I recently discovered the intersect option for combining masks. It allows you to combine two masks such that the resulting mask contains only the parts selected by both masks. As a data engineer this makes my brain happy and I often prefer working with intersections over subtractions. Give it a try some time!
Gooseneck is such an awesome place! I flew my drone the last time I was there and shot the entire thing from above. It's so huge when you're up close. Really amazing! I always forget about the object selection for masks. I've been combining masks and even using the intersect feature but thanks for reminding me about the object selection. What a great time to be a Photographer!
You can fix the sky/horizon harsh line by clicking on the sky mask; select the 3 dots to open drop down menu; click Intersect with; click on sky; hit enter. It separates the sky edits from bleeding outside the sky/horizon.
2:17 A similar way to dampen the effect of the select sky mask is to intersect it with a linear mask coming down from the top. The end result is basically the same but just thought I'd share :)
Another great video. On your sky selection, invert the mask, then hit subtract and select sky and then invert it again and you will have a better sky selection. This works really well around trees.
Great video and I will definitely be using that object feature. I really mostly use Lightroom because for me it is more intuitive. I do run into limitations with it and I just need to get better/more comfortable with photoshop. Thanks Michael for the great video!!
Thanks for a great clip, Michael. That masking tool was very impressive. I've used ON1 which makes a big noise about its "AI masking tools", but what you've shown in LR is far superior, IMO. I'd love to see how it goes on things like trees and frizzy hair...so I'll get hold of a demo and try it out.
Wonderful pano of the Goosenecks Micheal. I know from experience that it isn't the easiest shot since your are more or less limited (or at least were in the past) to photographing from the parking/picnic area. This puts you quite close to a very wide vista when trying to include both Goosenecks in the image. In your video, I don't think you covered the very powerful 'Intersect Mask with' feature. I use this all the time on skies: I create a Sky mask and then intersect it with either a Color or Luminance mask to target the aspect of the sky that I want to adjust. This way there is no risk that the edits will 'spill over' into other areas of the image that have similar colors or luminance. Might be a interesting subject for a part two of this video.
This video and your last video are bonkers in terms of quality, valuable advice. You're putting out the best landscape photography work out there, bar none! Thanks Michael.
Great video and tips! Now, I wish that with all of that empty real estate at the top of LR that Adobe would put all of the Masking features there as buttons instead of all of the sub-icons and drop-downs it currently has. I also second that suggestion about including HSL abilities in the Masking features as well.
I mean that’s great that you know all the Lightroom masking tools and ways to use them. That just means this tutorial wasn’t for you, many others felt the video was valuable for them. Perhaps there will be a video in the future that you will find something new in, or not. that’s really out of my control, I just do what I can here.
Great Video. You can also intersect mask like a linear gradient and the sky by holding to alt-key on windows. (I guess option on mac). It’s a similiar effect to your eMask on the sky in the first shot.
Great overview of these Lightroom masking tools Michael. I am an avid Lightroom user and am loving how far it has come over the last few years. I use the object selection tool frequently, and I find it does a better job than subject selection in many photos.
I use the “Intersect” feature with LR masking a lot. For a sky gradient I bring it down over the sky and you can click the 3 dots or the “option” key and select “intersect” with the sky. I’m still finding different ways to use the “Intersect” feature and I don’t see a lot of RUclipsrs mention it.
It’s a bit tough to get at first, but play around a bit and just push buttons on some photos with the masks. It’s a bit of a crude technique. But it’s how I learned everything in LR and PS. Just push buttons and see what they do haha 😂
I how no idea the object tool was so powerful! I am still spending a bit more time in photoshop but you have certainly given me some reasons to stay in lightroom! I am going to turn my computer on right now 🤣 Cheers for the tips!
I don't know about LR because I rarely use it if I only have a couple of pix to work on but in Camera Raw - which has pretty much the same tools - all you have to do to add another Object mask is just paint over it. No need to go to Add to select a new object, just paint one and move on to the next
Great tutorial! You know what sucks though, Adobe thinks that we who edit on iPad don’t want some of these tools. For some reason they are dead set on NOT making Lightroom on iPad as powerful as LrC. Makes no sense to me.
I’m having a strange issue with Lightroom. Every time I “select object”, my girlfriend lights up in red!😂😂 In all seriousness though… I am with you: I want to see them add HSL sliders to the mask section and while they’re at it, they should add the same noise, reduction, and sharpness tools as in the edit tab.
why is every freaking video on youtube about lightroom classic? i dont even know how to get that, im paying a subscription for the regular lightroom and i feel like ive picked the wrong one
Question do you find yourself using Lightroom or Photoshop more? Please let me know below !👇
98% Lightroom
Lightroom mostly, but every once in awhile I will use photoshop for certain things.
Definitely Lightroom
Lightroom 99%
Mostly Lightroom
🎯 I like the lower speed to teach very much. You do a great job.

Great demonstration and your talking flow and pronounciation makes it easy to understand for a francophone. Thanks
Excellent!

I always learn something by watching your videos. Thanks.
Thanks for watching Bob!

The intersect option with masking is also very powefful.

Thanks. I have hardly used Object Selection to date. Have to try it more regularly.
LR just keeps better and better. I only use PS for a few finishing touches sometimes at the end. I also like Color FX Pro for some cool effects.
Thank you
You are welcome and thanks for watching!
Thank you Michael once again for sharing your knowledge
Thank you, Michael! I love the object selection tool for masking.
Its amazing, thanks for watching :)
Great tip, using a linear grad to soften the sky selection.
Lightroom is so awesome to use. I love editing with it. The masks are so powerful and you can do so much with them. Great vid.
Great video, dude. Super helpful.

Can hardly wait to get back to my computer. Thanks

Interesting I will have to give that a go, thanks for sharing!
Really awesome tips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, it’s appreciated 👍😎
Thanks 😊
Superb 👌
Thank you!

nice one Michael, explained well.
Wow, great great thank you for this; awesome and you make it seem easy; need to practice
good tuto
Thank you for this video. I learned so much and really appreciate your clarity Michael.
Learned a lot in this video.....thank you !!
Always appreciate the tips! I’m not that good yet, but everything I’ve learned about landscape photography has been from you. You’re a true legend.
Thank you so much Johnny!

Your pic are my inspiration master regards from Peru!!

Great video Michael. Love the techniques. A couple I haven’t tried yet. Thanks!!
Way Cool Thank You
thank you
Lightroom now offers so many helpful tools to edit that I hardly ever need photoshop any more.
Its pretty impressive honestly. Now we just need focus stacking tool and a better dust removal tool in LR.
Very good video!

Was hoping to find something new. Turns out it's just the very same I'm using every day.
I mean that’s great that you know all the Lightroom masking tools and ways to use them. That just means this tutorial wasn’t for you, many others felt the video was valuable for them. I got a little lost with the sky, I'll have to rewatch that. Doing different things in one mask is still tricky for me.
It’s a bit tough to get at first, but play around a bit and just push buttons on some photos with the masks. It’s a bit of a crude technique. But it’s how I learned everything in LR and PS. Just push buttons and see what they do haha 😂

Cheers for the tips!
Can it replace with lens filters? I just bought the whole set of kase filters.
Interesting workflow, Michael! Do you think it’s good for Timelapses too, or does introduce weird artifacts?
thats a great question. My guess is you would get some unwanted inconsistencies with lightroom having to make a mask for each new frame :/
Great video! Is it possible to do a proper focus stack in lightroom or do i need photoshop for that?
thanks! Unfortunately still Photoshop. :/
I don't know about LR because I rarely use it if I only have a couple of pix to work on but in Camera Raw - which has pretty much the same tools - all you have to do to add another Object mask is just paint over it. No need to go to Add to select a new object, just paint one and move on to the next
I would love to see them add the ability to focus stack in Lightroom. Then I really wouldn’t need PS at all.
I am surprised they haven’t done it yet honestly.
Great tutorial! You know what sucks though, Adobe thinks that we who edit on iPad don’t want some of these tools. For some reason they are dead set on NOT making Lightroom on iPad as powerful as LrC. Makes no sense to me.
Hey thanks Erik, damn thats a bummer!
I’m having a strange issue with Lightroom. Every time I “select object”, my girlfriend lights up in red!😂😂

great video, but u can keep selecting object without selecting the tool each time.
Thanks, but unfortuntaly you can not. You need to click plus to add new object selections, which hopefully Adobe changes in the future.
promo sm 😣
