- This ration was part of an Air Force pilot's emergency kit -- its a Food Packet Survival, General Purpose from 1984. That makes it 34-years old! I was issued April 29th 1985, so very close.
In a non-combat survival situation, you can usually build a fire - and are encouraged to, for hot food, signalling and just plain morale. That kit was included in the seat pan of ejection seats, along with many other items. It came down with you hanging from the parachute. In 99% of instances, it was never used because you'd be picked up by rescue forces soon after you landed. In fact, many jets weren't even equipped with it. None of the ones I flew did.

Keep the key Emmy! It’s great to unlock doors that only have a small round hole on the outside. I used to lock the doors when I was a kid and this is how dad got me out. Lol!

ConstantCompanion we’ve used those too but a Spam key was easier. Now there are no Spam keys. 😣
the house we rent came with little wire "keys" with loops on one end specifically for the bathroom doors that have those locks. I never knew there were actual keys for those types of doors. 😆
hellsingmongrel lol! That’s the very room I’d get locked in! There aren’t any actual keys for them. The Spam keys were just an easy solution. The inside lock mechanism has a small slot that the key fits perfectly!
I'm late to the convo but that's why I keep a small screw driver over the bathroom door... my son has locked himself in before and left it locked when he came out

This is wild... my dad was in the Air Force in the 80s and was going through survival training in Washington state during the winter of 1984. I showed him this video and he was like whoa, blast from the past! He then said my mom's cooking is much better lol.

We make a porage out of those bars ,heat the water in the tin lid for that ,same with the coffee hot if possible makes it palatable! Love to you and your family as always God bless

Like one of those straws they gave us when I was a kid for the Milk bags at school. They had a very sharp side that was great for stabbing other kids.

The SPAM video reminded me of WW2 My mum is 85years and isn't keen on SPAM as it was pretty much all they had in 1940s UK. Same with corned beef espl. WW1

I love watching People eat MRE's or weird foods. It's fun and entertaining.
So many cans have pull tabs now. The key kind are SO SATISFYING! I do know of a few products that still use them. But not many

Thank you for saying what you said about hot food. When hurricane Irma hit here my family was without power for a couple of days. A neighbor cooked food on their grill and offered it to anyone who asked. It was such a hot day, but I reveled it having a hot meal.
I love you're willing to try the older ones & seem to be smart about it. Afterall in a survival situation I'm sure we all would be greatful for anything!!! I'm blessed & have never been hungry or in any similar situation. But you took some fear away; god forbid we ever are!

My family ate so much canned products as a kid I had a whole collection of those metal keys. It was very affordable and you could do alot with the different meats. Grill, fry, grind and baked.

That can tin brings back memory’s, when I was young we had quite a few tins that had to be opened that way, we used to loved think it was cool. We pronounce it “Weetbix” in Australia. Very brave to eat something that old, don’t whether I would have.

I don't recall tuna having the metal strips and keys, just Spam and corned beef. I think corned beef still does. Maybe sardines, too, and a few other things. Usually odd shaped cans, seldom round ones.

None of the items in it contain the things that are more likely to become toxic, so as long as nothing got any visible mold, it's most likely just going to taste stale and/or rancid.
