  • This is a tutorial on how to make a pad sound using wavetable oscillators on the Waldorf Blofeld. We'll make a patch from scratch and in the end we'll be able to quickly switch the patch from a pad to more of a keyboard patch using the mod wheel.

    I've heard people say that this synthesizer isn't "warm" and you've clearly proven it's more than capable of warm sounds. Nicely done, amazing patch!

      I imagine that people that say that have either only watched videos showing it’s digital side or messed around with the presets. Almost everyone I know that’s really owned one says it can be very warm. I’ve gotten some amazing pads out of mine.

      hey Jeremy, yeah it's a beast of a synth! I don't know why I waited so long to finally pick one up. If you get one lmk, I'd love to hear your take on it.

      once upon a synth I ended up with a virus indigo 2 as my powerhouse va, but it definitely lacks the wave table modulation you show off here. Blofeld pads sound amazing.

      I have a white one still in the box, i bought from Bax music (with reciepts) but never used it and it is not for me (i was kinda forced in to buying it by my cousin, long story) they're really heavy aswell, great build quality on these things are great, best ive yet to come across,and nice thick heavy keys, but as i travel a lot its just another reason why i need to sell it, although id really love to really be able to work on one once i have my own place ...IF ANYONE INTERESTED I AM IN THE NORTHEASTUK SO WOULD PREFARE TO SELL INLAND/INPERSON DUE TO WIEGHT/POSTAGE (but only as a prefarence) I WOULD LIKE TO GET £500 for it as it is in MINT CONDITION...I am going to take photos later on today for Synths For Sale in UK FB Group, sorry for my free advert lol but i do like listening to the potential of these things ...i can see myself buying the desktop version later on but right now im focusing on my MPC Live as thats where my heart is and ive not yet got to use that .Nice Video tho man, I liked the sample you had on the modular sampler (tiptop i think), keep it up Peace

    One thing to note.....certain wavetables, literally contain hundreds of timbres. Its really touchy, moving just a few “pulse spaces” completely changes things. You could literally spend a week examining just one wavetable.
    I like to make a pad, and the use a short looping envelope on the amp of oscillator 3, then use another envelope to mod the decay of env 3, to get a nice twinkling in the background, maybe mod the send of osc 3 side to side in the background.
    This was nice. Wait until you crack multi mode. Start layering patches, and things get nuts, big time. Break out the analog chorus or delay pedals...sounds great with the digital sounds. Nice vid.

    Awesome! New Blofeld videos! Great job. I bought my Blofeld desktop for really cheap second hand and I can't get enough of it. Sure there are plugins out there which can do the same plus a lot more, but then I probably have too much adult ADHD to concentrate on sound design in front of my computer. Not so with the Blo! I regularly grab my Blofeld and my Keystep, get comfy on the couch and just have endless hours of designing my own sounds. Once one's used to the interface it's very quick! I have also used my BCR2000 knob controller with the Blofeld to have more direct control when I'm jamming live. Ah, again, thanks for your videos might, great sounds and keep it up! Cheers :)

      i just got into the blofeld + keystep = couch time equation. it's nice to be able to post up in a comfortable spot, away from my studio, and dive into making evolving sounds. great machine for it. cheers!

      I went this route as well. Blofeld and the Keystep = otherworldly possibilities. I usually go back forth designing patches on my Blo and Serum. It truly is an amazing time to make music. Do you have the SL license option. I bought my desktop brand new, so I'm waiting for a sale to upgrade.

    Such a versatile & so much to explore. A very inexpensive synth especially if you get the module version. Had a few problems with patches not loading but Waldorf were really helpful & replaced parts at cost

    Thanks man, awesome sound, preset saved as Once Upon a Synt (not enough characters for the H ha ha). Just bought a few synths this beauty being one of them, amazed by how many modulations you can do so cool. This definitely helped with me understanding the Blofeld a bit more, thank you. There where a couple of times when you changed wavetables with out saying etc but I appreciate how difficult it must be to make sure you put everything in when you are editing the video, just something to watch out for. Thank a lot, Subscribed.

    Congrats! You made it to almost 3 min without reaching for noise lol :D
    Few things entered my head whilst watching this...
    1)Many owners sell Blofeld's, then buy another. Kind of clear (buy another) to see why.
    2)Part way through, it could have gone to becoming drone-like (I watched the DM12 vid today)
    3)Once I buy a synth, it'll take a while to learn the craft. If A+B+C=D, then to create D, I'll need to construct it.
    4)There will be no harm at all in playing with design along the way.
    5)With Quantum & STVC imminent, could we see a Blofeld successor in 2019
    6)What a mini-beast the Blofeld's successor will be...! Especially if it gets a little bit of Quantum tech inside it.
    IYHO, how good is the Blofeld manual for synthesis information/instruction? I guess I'm like most, it's always nice to see it done on the fly. As ever, great work. I followed this and it all made sense. The only time I began to falter was when talk changed to assigning new things (LFO's, mod etc) to effect previous parts/blocks. I think next time I'll drawer a diagram whilst I watch :)
    My Insomnia doesn't help that, pls don't think it's a criticism. Until the next one... 11/10

      gotta say, having owned a lot of synths and really thinking I know how they oughtta be working all the time, A+B+C often equals N13... things get weird quick, basically.

    Nice video! I know this is 5 years ago now, but would you still recommend a Blofeld today? I'm considering one. It seems to have a crazy amount of potential for the price, particularly in the after market. PS how do you find the Blo's effects? Thanks.

    It's best to leave the mod slots 1 through 4 empty in case you want to use the MOD 1 AMMOUNT modifiers later in the patch :3

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  6 лет назад +1

      Ah good tip, I didn't realize mod 1 amount was a possible destination, will have to dig into that.

    • @kubajanicki4890
      @kubajanicki4890 6 лет назад +2

      At the end of the list of possible destinations you have ammount of modulation applied to mod slots 1 through 4. I like using it to get some audio rate modulation during the attack phase of the patch for example

    Quick question: Envelope Velocity: does it mean that the envelope has a bigger sustain value depending on how hard you play the keys (velocity); or is it just a fixed valued for how "intense" the envelope feels?

    I read is not possible to use two effects in a patch at the same time. Do you use external effects of a pedalboard? For example

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  6 лет назад +1

      There are 2 effect slots that you can use at the same time, but not all effects are available in both. So for example I don't think you can have two reverbs, but you can have overdrive and reverb at the same time for example. I didn't use any external effects in this video, but you could of course experiment with pedals for sure.

    It'd be great if you had an overhead on the Blofeld's screen!

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  6 лет назад

      I've actually wanted to do this. The main problem I have is figuring out how to have a second overhead cam filming the screen without getting in the shot of the main camera.... if I figure it out I'll def. start doing this, but so far it's been a challenge. Thanks for the suggestion though

    • @CaalamusTube
      @CaalamusTube 6 лет назад

      For sure, your æsthetic is super clean. I can see why you'd avoid a Tripod in the shot.
      I guess without a beam or bar running horizontally above, with a Camera mounted on it & zoomed way in... you'd be kinda stuck.
      More unsolicited suggestions:
      Green Screen Fabric/Poster Board wrapped around it✓
      ...or really, your shot is so tight, you could tether the Tripod to a door handle or something with some twine! You know, have it leaning above the shot.
