A refreshing romantic number with Punjab written all over it!
The beauty of Chonch Ladhiyaan is in it's simplicity! Simplicity in music, lyrics & vocals. Every aspect of the composition is done in just the right proportion to create this refreshing, romantic number. While typically it takes the usual loudness of bhangra beats on dhol and equally powerful vocals to symbolize a Punjabi song, Amit Trivedi does the same with subtleness and style with this number. To me three aspects of the composition did the trick:
a) The Lyrics: while I am usually biased to choosing the melody or the arrangement, the lyrics stood out for me here. They are simple, hummable, and very nicely weaves various aspects of Punjab into the song. Shelley has again re-created magic like in DevD and Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana.
b) The Vocalists: At the end of the day this is a romantic number and hence it boils down to how the vocalists reflect that feeling. Both Harshdeep and Jazim did a superlative job in this number. It was quite apt that Amit Trivedi got Punjabi vocalists to sing this and most other numbers as they brought in the flavour very well. Harshdeep seems to have been the obvious choice for many songs in the album given the setting and her past stints in in Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. Her voice is naturally quite soft and romantic. Jazim is quite a relevation for me in this movie. I have followed his rise in the industry since his reality TV days. Always knew him as a amazing Ghazal singer, but was pleasantly surprised to see him ace this subtle romantic number. His slight husky voice seems to be perfect adding to the breezy feel of the arrangement.
c) The Arrangement: The best thing of the arrangement was that it was subtle! And Amit has a great knack of doing this just right. The stand-out aspect of the arrangement is the Israj performed by Arshad Khan. Israj single handedly weaves in both the folk and romantic element beautifully. The dholak is subtle and lets the vocalists dominate rightfully. The rest of the arrangement is standard with a nice base-line, guitars and smart use of strings at places where the song builds up.
Random observation: The composition did remind me of Manjha from Kai-Po-Che at places where Israj is used. (Like at 00:43)
To sum up Chonch Ladhiyaan is a beautiful, romantic number that you would put a smile on your face instantly. Give it a few runs and you'll soon be addicted to it and hum it all day! :)

Abhishek Bachchan is the real OG in the industry... don't know what's wrong in our generation...but I've watched almost all his movies and believe me his acting and script selection is mind blowing..just love him.. especially a true gentleman in real life and an extremely good human being ❤️❤️ I love Abhishek... he's my favourite!! I never liked Punjabi music, songs and the overwhelming focus of punjabi culture in Bollywood. But in this movie most of the songs are timeless and heartwarming. Nothing wrong with Punjabi language, songs or accent, it just needs a genius to turn it magical. Anurag has turned punjabi characters like AB so adorable and charming that it is hard to express. Ajay Devgan in Hum dil de chuke sanam and AB in Manamarzian have similarities.
