  • In this video clip, Master Chen Zhonghua explains how the concept of "shou ji shi fang" is achieved. This is a video clip only. There is no DVD for sale associated with this clip.
    (Paul Janssens)
I rate this as another 'Golden' short instructional video by Master Chen Zhonghua
When withdrawing the elbow, we have heard of many explanations of what to do.
In the beginning we are taught not to make a 'double weighted' movement (i.e. Move the hand and elbow in the same direction).
Then we learn that 'the hand is reluctant', making it look like the hand stays behind when the elbow is drawn to the Dan Tian.
Once you know this, you can start to analyse the movement of withdrawing the elbow in this 'Golden' video.
The video starts of (0:26) with a small advanced demo of the Basic Foundation move of "twisting the towel". Not really practical for beginners, as beginners need to do this movement slowly at first. (Because otherwise you think you can do it fast and miss the whole point of the exercise)
Then (at 0:37), in the lead up to the gem in this video, you find a short demo of the Positive Circle from the Basic Foundations Video.
At 1:20 you find out that the energy goes out (!!!). In order to make sense of this, and, if unfamiliar with the Positive Circle of the Chen style Taijiquan Practical Method (a title used and approved by Chen Fake for Hong Jungsheng's analysis of the Chen style Taijiquan) I suggest that you practice the 'Positive Circle' for a few 1000 times. (Which sounds like a lot but is not really, if you realise you do around 350 circles (Pos and Neg combined) in the Yilu set)
Then, at 2:01 Master Chen goes into the detail on how this outward action is achieved, when he discusses the 'dot' or 'pivot'. The understanding of this 'pivot' is VERY IMPORTANT & CRUCIAL in your understanding of the lever in the Practical Method.
At 2:33 Master Chen discusses that the 'pivot' also occurs in a different plane when withdrawing the elbow.
At 4:04, while continuing to explain the movement, Master Chen inserted a small clip of the 'Positive Circle with Stepping'. Note the 'settling of the heel' at the two extremities of the stretch of the arm. (Sounds like a small stomp on a wooden floor)
At 4:37 you get a clear view of the use of the 'pivot' point on the front arm from above. For those students of the Practical Method, I believe this is an important part to pick up on when drawing in the elbow.

I have not listened to every piece of Johann Sebastian Bach's music, but I've heard someone said that Bach did not write one bad song. Same goes with Master Chen Zhonghua, I have not seen all of his videos, but is there one bad video? Every video I've watched I've learned something new. He is extraordinary. He is exceptional. He is Super Duper Master Tai Chi Man!!!!
