Perfurma is not a trans woman, if I'm not mistaken the creator herself said she didn't think of her that way, and didn't want to have the merit of having made a trans character without her intending to
may I add to this? there is a manga called "Love me for who i am" that focuses on a nonbinary, assigned male at birth main character who starts working at a cross dressing maid café. They fall in love with and start dating a guy who works at the cafe which is run by his trans sister and struggles to define his own sexuality. there are three other workers at the cafe; a straight ally who loves cosplay, a cheerful student who talks about his boyfriend non stop and loves to give romantic advice, and the one who appears to be their leader, a waiter who secretly wishes to transition to being a woman but hides behind her identity as a cross dresser. there is also a lesbian struggling to accept herself. its a lovely and fun story that came out only a few years ago, with adorable art and covers, and as a trans and nonbinary person myself it does an amazing job at representing lgbtq people. i would definitely recommend it
hibari is an especially interesting case. the anime was created in the '80s, but she's still about as canon as you can get. she's explicitly referred to as the japanese term for trans woman at the time (newhalf) in the show, and although there are various transphobic characters in the show (as is expected, cuz, '80s), the creator's self-insert character always genders her correctly. there's also a very cute scene where she meets another trans woman in a later episode
I love double trouble. They're such a great character, and the fandom seems to focus more on catra, adora, glimmer, bow, etc. There are a few compilations of them, but once again they're constantly being overshadowed. They're dramatic, funny, and super underrated. Give Double Trouble more appreciation!
It's very interesting to me that Japan is doing so much to contribute to transgender and non-binary characters in media, which is kinda strange coming from a more conservative country. I love it.
In Japan it's more about keeping everything private and not really about it being seen as a bad thing. Most people don't actually care but the lack of care for politics and peoples sexualities is also why the laws (Like gay marriage still not being allowed) don't change.
historically androgynousness (or at least, men who looked like and could act like women) was often desirable, there's an interesting history of how Japanese gender roles changed defensively with contact with western powers who were all about men having to be "masculine" and saw feminity as weak and bad
@@msk-qp6fn It also helps that, in Japan, manga is seen more as a format of media with multiple genres and audiences unlike the US where comics are, for the most part, superhero and funny-pages affairs. There are also more characters in Japanese folklore that are more flippant with things like gender. I like it. Its very much "people like these exist, that's normal. Now, lets have them get in on the actual story."
I hope that you can have a safe, fun and loving pride month! I hope that you find a group of friends that you can trust. Truly, with all my heart, i hope that you find a safe place to live your life!
Because for eastern people inclusion is not a thing. If you watch Dragon Ball, you will notice that there were gays years before they were included in the west. They care about the story and the character development, and showing to everyone that a character is (whatever it is) is not relevant. It will not affect the story if you know that... Westerns in the other hand need to show everybody which sexual preference their characters have... Take Dumbledore as an example. It was irrelevant if he was gay... it was said after the books, because it doesn't matter. That's the main difference of why things are so bad nowadays... they are SO focused on making everything inclusive that they don't care if the story is bad.
@@NL-X yeah but the reason why people are inclusive in the first place isnt just to be inclusive, theres a lot more to it. Inclusiveness exists (or did exist) for people to be comfortable with how they look or feel, and sometimes stories do base around this.
@@qiwunu No, I know. I was just telling why you barely see eastern things being like that. Is because is not a problem to them. They simply don't care about that, and I personally respect that.
As some people has noted, both trans characters from My Hero Academia fight each other. It's interesting to note that Magne killed a lot of people, and it was kinda referred that she did because they didn't let her and her best friend to "be free". So basically, rejection from society is what made her turn to villainy. On the other side, Tiger always had the kindness of his Friends and teamates, he transitioned in peace with the support of his loved ones and followed a righteous path. Maybe I'm reading too hard into the subtext, but I think, by making them fight each other, the creator shows the difference in their nurture, Two sides of the same coin. My Hero Academia usually shows the villians as victims of the society rejection, Magne is no different. She might have been different if society accepted her from the beggining. Instead, she clung to the only people that treated her well, equally abandoned, rejected and misguided people that were already on a very twisted path.
magne also doesn't pass and can't transition, while tiger is fully transitioned and passes, this seems to say a lot about where villains fall in this world vs heroes
I think it shows how upbringing and social status can drastically make a trans person's life different from that of another. It is shown that Tiger had enough wealth to afford going overseas to get surgery while Magne was struggling to make money. (I think Magnes lips indicate that she got cheap plastic surgery) I think it's interesting since you see both extremes all the time. There are wealthy trans people with a loving family that don't really suffer from discrimination and there are trans people in poor neighborhoods that were rejected by their families and are being killed left and right and who also are more likely to join criminal activity. To add to that trans men often don't need to change their face too much since there are many men with soft facial features, something that can't be said for trans woman. This makes a trans woman's transition harder. And in the show it is taken to the extreme by giving Tiger a quirk that can change his body to show the difference between trans woman and men as well.
@@plzleavemealone9660 i'm not sure magne's lips mean anything, to me it seems she can't even afford estrogen which is the bare minimum its obvious she can't afford to transition or look feminine
Turns out having trans representation in cartoons doesn't make kids trans, it makes them empathetic. Who would have thunk it? Also can I just say Rainbow Quartz is basically Harry Styles 😄
Yes it does? Maybe not every single one of them but it does make them inclined to check out the LGBTQ+ community on the internet which is kind of a cult where tolerance doesn't exist for those with opposing opinions and views which is a bad environment for an impressionable kid. Don't get me wrong I'm all for empathy being taught to children through cartoons but it doesn't have to make characters LGBTQ+ because of the fact that it's controversial. Also some of this stuff doesn't even make sense like what the hell is non-binary? At that point they aren't teaching kids anything.
I’m amazed at how well Japanese creators write trans characters in anime. All the transgender characters I’ve seen in Japanese works are beautifully written, with stories that make them wonderful, well-rounded characters and are given integrity as the human beings they are. Not to say that there isn’t bad trans representation in Japanese media, all I’m saying is I have yet to see trans characters in anime and manga that aren’t written in a poor manner 😅 It makes me happy to see a lot of good trans rep in my favorite anime!
Grell was my favourite character in black Butler, I mean,, all about her is perfect, I also love all the dismorphya presented in blue period with the character of Yuka-chan, I really felt her words

I'm afab non-binary, and I can kind of relate. I don't pass as androgynous to anyone over the age of 10 or so. It sucks to not be validated as who you really are by society. But I want to recognize you as the beautiful enby you are, no matter what you look like on the outside. ❤️
Dude, I get that as someone who is questioning their gender identity. I wondered if I was nonbinary, but I feel as though I'm too close to my biological sex to come out as non-binary AND after going by my biological gender pronouns my whole life I don't think I'd ever truly be comfortable with going by they/them pronouns, but I'm also not like others of my biological gender, either. Right now I'm wondering if I'm genderfluid since my mannerisms do seem to change between male and female often (don't ask about clothing, I have a very specific taste and that taste is baggy, loose, and stretchy) and, if I'm understanding my research right, some genderfluid individuals might still go by their assigned pronouns at birth. I really don't know. All I know is that I just don't feel comfortable being shoved with others of my biological sex when I don't feel like them, don't want to be like them, and don't feel comfortable around them but I really don't know. Maybe I'm just overthinking everything. All I know is that I'm definitely not normal but that may just be my neurodivergence (I don't believe I show enough signs to be professionally diagnosed with ADHD or autism, but nearly everyone I know has asked me if I'm on the autism spectrum OR if I have ADHD and my mom tells me I am neurodivergent but I don't know that much about myself)

Like, this is INSANE ( in a good way ) and sending me into OUTER-MOTHERDUCKING-SPACE! Yeah, there have been characters that use they/them in cartoons and that's great progress, but its never outright _stated_ like that! It just happens, it's subtle, it's never called attention to, it feels a little bit like they're trying to not let the parents hear it, but THIS is a crazy amount of progress that NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT and that WILL NOT STAND!
I wonder how did the other countries translate that sentence. For example, in Spanish there's no nonbinary pronouns, almost every word is gendered. Some people have suggested "Elle" as a neutral pronoun but most people hate it _(including me, since it breaks the language's rules)_ so how could they translate it?

Kazi-the shy elven sign language interpreter from “The Dragon Prince”-is also non-binary. Their pronouns are confirmed in Twitter posts and books outside the show, though.
I was there when Jungle Moon came out. I saw the backlash happen first hand. From all the usual suspects, but also from trans women who got “secondhand dysphoria” from seeing Stevonnie shave. From all the people who aesthetically prefer their non-binary rep to be “woman-lite.” As a masc-leaning enby, it was super noticeable. I saw the same thing happen to a real person. A gender fluid comic artist who would get straight-up harassed by their followers when they were going through masc days.

So a quick story time: I recently met the English voice actor for Yu from Stars Align (Brandon McInnis) at a convention, and as I non-binary person, when I went up to his booth, I told him how much their coming out scene meant to me and thanked him for voicing the character. He then told me that when the studio first started dubbing the show, since there isn’t a manga and episodes are dubbed as they come out in Japan, the directors thought Yu was just gay, so they cast them as Brandon (because Brandon is very openly gay), but then when the episode about Yu coming out was released, he and the directors had an “Oh crap” moment because they realized Yu was experiencing gender dysphoria. And so, Brandon contacted the four non-binary people he knew and asked them to tell him everything they knew to help him get more in character. And if that wasn’t enough, during his Q & A panel, when he spoke about me, *he used my pronouns* and I didn’t even say anything or ask! TL;DR - Brandon McInnis is a beautiful human being
"I am a woman at heart." The story and the style seem so beautiful ;)
Hi, I'm glad you liked the video! Reasons for various characters include me not knowing of their existence or them not being confirmed trans and/or nonbinary either by creators or the media itself. Have fun watching these shows!!!
Deidara was a male idiot, but yes haku maybe was trans we didn't get a confirmation. All confirmation is that orochimaru is nonbinary and Naruto and sasuke were supposed to be gay before
MHA has more representation than I expected! It has a trans man, a trans woman and a bisexual/pansexual character! It's sad that two of them are villains but when you see the society in mha you get why they would become villains. There's also sentient quirks, one's Pino (from the movie) who uses She/Her despite being a guy's quirk and another is Dark Shadow who uses It/It's (I know sentient quirks aren't technically people in the show but they are to me) also I love how topics like racism/ableism are represented through quirks in the show. For example heteromorphs or mutants are seen as non-human or villainous, so are blood quirks and brainwashing quirks, you see how this discrimination can turn someone to villainy, even the main character was born quirkless which is technically a disability in MHA. there's also actual disabled characters (amputees, a selective mute character and a character with a split personality disorder)
One thing i liked about both of the representations Horikoshi placed in My hero academia was that you can also kinda see the difference in how wealthier people are able to transition easily while villains aka lower class like Magne and her friend still face problems and are judged. It doesnt have to be their whole character for it to make an impact and i love to see that from japanese artists
Yep! Mangle actually become a villain because all the discrimination and misstreat she pass, she start transtitioned when she become a villain for the other hand Tiger had friends and more support so he transioned more calmly, there's some contrast in this characters
Horikoshi really nailed it with the two of them. Magne can be seen as someone who is "pretransition", even though other people use her correct pronouns. She is still presenting as male and is socially integrated as male. However, she isn't mocked or belittled for this. She is still a woman. Her whole villain arc is canonically rooted to the discrimination she faced and how she felt othered and isolated by people in society. Coming from a poorer background, as well, made it harder for her to transition. Her devotion to the League is based on the fact that they don't treat her as different. She is a woman in their eyes, and they respect and accept her. Tiger, on the other hand, was given the resources and support during the entirety of his transition. He had a team who loved him for him, and were able to support him. Society welcomed him (or so it seemed) as he transitioned. Tiger as a character is also allowed to embrace his femininity, as seen with his uniform and behaviors. Horikoshi is just fantastic at depicting trans realities and I adore it so much.

hibari is an especially interesting case. the anime was created in the '80s, but she's still about as canon as you can get. she's explicitly referred to as the japanese term for trans woman at the time (newhalf) in the show, and although there are various transphobic characters in the show (as is expected, cuz, '80s), the creator's self-insert character always genders her correctly. there's also a very cute scene where she meets another trans woman in a later episode

Societally the concept of trans and non binary people are probably more tolerant and accepting. But legality wise nothing has happened....yet.
historically androgynousness (or at least, men who looked like and could act like women) was often desirable, there's an interesting history of how Japanese gender roles changed defensively with contact with western powers who were all about men having to be "masculine" and saw feminity as weak and bad
Ikr? It's kinda hypocritical though, just a bit. We're not nearly as accepted over there when we're real people.

Its kind of sad that the majority of these are western cartoons, i rarely see representation in eastern media. But I am glad it exists still.
true, eastern media doesnt have much but it still exists at least
@@beelieboo yeah, ive really only seen sexuality wised representation, not much trans or nonbinary (big emphasis on non binary)
Horikoshi likes to use a lot of parallels in his stories.
The story of My Hero Academia in a nutshell is basically no matter what you’ve been through, it’s your choice on what path to go on.
magne also doesn't pass and can't transition, while tiger is fully transitioned and passes, this seems to say a lot about where villains fall in this world vs heroes
I think it shows how upbringing and social status can drastically make a trans person's life different from that of another.
It is shown that Tiger had enough wealth to afford going overseas to get surgery while Magne was struggling to make money. (I think Magnes lips indicate that she got cheap plastic surgery)
I think it's interesting since you see both extremes all the time.
@@plzleavemealone9660 i'm not sure magne's lips mean anything, to me it seems she can't even afford estrogen which is the bare minimum
its obvious she can't afford to transition or look feminine
Turns out having trans representation in cartoons doesn't make kids trans, it makes them empathetic. Who would have thunk it? Also can I just say Rainbow Quartz is basically Harry Styles 😄
RQ is just a better version of Harry Styles lmao

Who was it? Unless you meant Double Trouble.

For the longest time, I thought Stevonnie was a girl. But then the episode Jungle Moon came out and I said to myself: *Wait a damn minute*
@@MarchingGrrl so many lgbtq+ online spaces are basically just for fems. gods help you if you're butch, an amab enby, not 'feminine enough' of a trans woman, get on testosterone, or are a trans man (especially if you're one who performs femininity even when it's dysphoric in order to be tolerated in communities that feel like the only places that are trans-safe).
it's a whole mess
So a quick story time:
I recently met the English voice actor for Yu from Stars Align (Brandon McInnis) at a convention, and as I non-binary person, when I went up to his booth, I told him how much their coming out scene meant to me and thanked him for voicing the character.
TL;DR - Brandon McInnis is a beautiful human being
That's really cool.

The way Craig was offended gets me every time
One thing i liked about both of the representations Horikoshi placed in My hero academia was that you can also kinda see the difference in how wealthier people are able to transition easily while villains aka lower class like Magne and her friend still face problems and are judged.
Horikoshi is just fantastic at depicting trans realities and I adore it so much.
thank you for this it makes me feel a lot better

I don’t think a web show made by one 19 year old in her basement with like 2 million vies counts as a “cartoon”.
@@humanbeeing4780 whats wrong with you
@@humanbeeing4780 but... it is? a cartoon? just more indie
Yes I love Sallie Mae
@@humanbeeing4780 it's actually made by a team of animators, voice actors, editors, etc. And the first episode has over 40 million views.
I’ve never watched Stars Align but the fact that Yu Asuka looks like my ideal self amazes me
I'm nonbinery and this makes me so happy to see people like me and trans people who deserve representatived
🏳️🌈👍
Only X chromosomes you’re female, any amount of Y chromosomes, you’re male.
@@humanbeeing4780 what about intersex people with 3 chromosomes ? not trying to be rude (even though I know this comment is meant to be transphobic) but there's people with , for example , XYY chromosomes which generally makes them intersex
Nobody:
Me hearing "Teenagers scare the living shit out of me" at 10:04
OH MY GOD YES
Section Commander Hange Zoe from “Attack on Titan” is androgynous in the manga.
Their gender’s ambiguous, but they’re designed more feminine in the anime.
9:08 His color scheme is the trans flag!
Oh, cool
I couldn't help but think of the Dragon Prince while watching. They have a nonbinary finguistics expert named Kazi (I love them so much).
Yes!!! I hope we see more of them in later seasons (whenever that happens…)
@@theautismrizzler Definitely! Kazi is already a fan favourite, so they will surely return (I think Netflix bought the rights for 7 seasons or so? So plenty of time)
@@loverofteaandspice Yeah, I did see that but it’s just been ages since the last season lmao
@@theautismrizzler The pandemic probably complicated things alot for the production of the show. That's probably why it's taking so long, but I don't know. Just speculation.
You mean the female?
fun fact: Stevonnie is actually intersex! :D
Their are actually both. They are non-binary and intersex. The comics and Dove commercial confirms this.
@@rosieg6989 oh, thanks! i didn't know that, lol
She appears to be female.
Intersex is divided into male and female categories. Only X chromosomes = female , any amount of Y chromosomes = male
I love Rainbow 2.0. I'm a trans guy and I use He/They pronouns, I just feel He and They suit me better than just He
🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 👍
Pronounce have no gender
I DIDNT KNOW SMOKEY QUARTS IS NONBINARY???????????? WHY I LEARN IT ONLY NOW
EXACTLY MY REACTION??????
Well yeah i mean. Stevens masc, amethysts fem, so a fusion between the two wouldn't really be either (or both?)
@@chadlikespasta3142 no no i already understand the logic its just the russian dub (and the fandom) which erases nby representation
@@mergimergimergi ......just as every other lgbt representation... it's kinda sad
@@Potateohkeel i know :( owl house for example got cancelled in russia...
8:02 YOU DID NOT 💀
I have to admit as a person with a sibling who is able to sit down and watch all 1k episodes of One Piece at 8:29 had me for days for more love and desire to sit down and watch it
2:53 u can't tell me they dont sound like glen-glenda from seed of chucky ( glen-glenda is gender fluid )
I'll like to add Venus from Heaven's Design Team to this list, she's a queen ✨
IVE ONLY EVER SEEN PICTURES OF DOUBLE TROUBLE AND I WAS NOT READY FOR THEIR VOICE I LOVE THEM SM ALREADY
smokey quartz was the most gender enby character ive seen growing up, im not saying they stole my gender, but i also a saying they did.
7:20 I remember watching this movie (beautiful btw), I like Hana a lot ^^
If you guys are wondering why there's so many enby characters in Steven universe it's because it's literally fusions of multiple people. Steven is a dude and most the characters he fuses with are female or female presenting aliens. So ya. (shep is just an enby human tho)
I must say that first non-binary character (or confused about they gender identity) I ever know is Violet Harper ("Halo") from "Young Justice". I can't wait to see what path writers choose for her!
2:00 okay lets be honest, they were an icon.
REAL THEY WERE MY FAVORITE
TRUE
Hana from Tokyo Godfathers its such a great character, a really good example. Also, the three protagonists are amazing
Yu is so cool! I knew most of the others but not them and I love their character design sm. The arts type for that show looks rlly cool
