I viewed the video and found it helpful in understanding how the latch mechanism works and how to "approach" getting access. However, removing the entire bumper was not necessary. I simply removed the "vent" to the air filter and detached the inside "bridge" (plastic) piece from in between the grill and the radiator...it's about 3 1/2 feet wide and about 3 inches deep. I then inserted a block to expand the access area to the latch. From there it was a piece of cake to unbolt the latch and do the work on the latch.
I don't know why he pulled the whole bumper off along with the grill. If you remove just the grill, which is much easier, you'll have full access to the hood latch.
Would this be the same for a 2011 Subaru Outback? Thank you for these videos, one of your other videos/your parts helped me successfully replace my window motors last month.
I took off my grille on a 09impreza without taking off the bumper and then bagged all the bolts and got the grille and took it inside to remove the sport mesh with a small screwdriver for repaint and also to remove the emblem, but as I went to close the hood for the night I noticed it wasn’t closing right. Only the safety lock would engage it seems because as soon as I pull up (one should always check if it closed properly so it won’t flap up at speed lol) it would come out like an inch as if I’d just unlocked it from inside. I know the grille wasn’t holding the hood down so it has to be this latch! Piece of junk lol maybe the cable and switch got stuck but I don’t think the latch on it is so new… I’ll have to decide if cleaning mine is more worth it than getting a new one. Same procedure as long as you’re taking it out to clean it outside of the car.
How to open the hood, when release handle doesnt respond, and the hood is locked? It happened for my legacy 2006. I cannot change bulb or check oil level... 😥

Can't you just remove the grill on a 2009 Outback without having to remove the entire front bumper to get access to the hood latch?

I assume he used the "by the book" process.
Any videos on how to replace the release cable?

How did you remove just the grill? I have a 2009 Outback A1 Auto's way seemed way to involved to just get to the hood latch so you could remove it.
Videos starts at 4:55 yall!

What happens when the cable has snapped at the catch end of the hood.

Scratching the paint off for placement indication? No thanks.

Do you guys have a video for a 1998 subaru legacy
+Haley Patterson Here's a how-to video for a vehicle similar to yours. These steps should be similar enough to complete this task:
No torque wrench? What’s the torque spec for those hood latch bolts? Thanks
Untill its tight and woll not move
Those bolts are subject to the German Gudentiet torque specification.
Force a bonnet open
Definitely not an 04 Outback.
